Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all mental health disorders, schizophrenia remains the most pervasive, bewildering, and resistant to treatment. In addition to its profound effect on the patient, the illness can be equally devastating to the family, a problem that is compounded by the family's frequent role as provider of primary care. Psychoeducation systematically takes into account the family's role in providing care, and the importance of supporting this system, which in turn supports the patient. It is a method of care that remains focused on the family while making use of biological, psychological, and vocational interventions. SCHIZOPHRENIA IN THE FAMILY represents the first treatment manual based on the psychoeducational model. In conjunction with maintenance chemotherapy, psychoeducation reduces the emotional intensity of the patient's environment and creates a sense of continuous care. Using illustrative case examples, this "how-to-do-it' manual demonstrates methods to: * Increase treatment compliance * Sustain patients in the community * Gradually integrate patients into familial, social, and vocational roles. Specifically, they explain how to develop a productive treatment alliance with the patient and the family, and how to share with them concrete knowledge about the illness as well as management techniques for handling its difficulties. They provide recommendations for managing the critical, early outpatient phase of treatment and suggest methods for promoting the ability to work and socialize outside the home. Additionally, they describe how to conduct the final stages of treatment, when patients may be moving into maintenance sessions, other treatment methods, or toward termination. The book concludes with a helpful chapter on training issues and the application of the psychoeducational model to other mental health systems.

Book Synopsis Families with a Schizophrenic Patient by : Dianne Marie P. Español
Download or read book Families with a Schizophrenic Patient written by Dianne Marie P. Español and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is a complex syndrome affecting the lives of the persons who have the closest interaction with the patient, usually the family. The study aimed to determine the perceptions, structure and dynamics of families with a schizophrenic paient prior to and after the onset of the illness. Making these known would further improve the existing family support programs, and promote the importance of healthy family atmosphere of mental patients. Multiple case study method was used in exploring the family perceptions, structure and dynamics of the ten (10) Filipino families with a schizophrenic patient. Observation and interviews were the two major means of data collection. The multiple case study method underwent (2) stages of analysis-the with-in case analysis and cross-case analysis. The data were evaluated and reviewed by experts in the field and by the family members themselves. On family perceptions of schizphrenia, substance abuse and ill health as cause, application of physical restraints as management, and medical intervention as treatment obtained the highest number of responses. In terms of family structure and family dynamics prior to and after the onset of schizophrenia, most of the parents had close and harmonious relationships with the schizophrenic patient before the onset. Although parents felt burdened by the illness they expressed loving and supportive roles to the mentally sick child. Loving and supportive relationship obtained the highest number of responses in describing the relationship between the parents and other children prior to and after the onset of the illness. Husbands and wives engaged in conflictual relationship both before and after the onset of the illness. In most families, the siblings and the schizophrenic patient had close and harmonious relationship prior to the illness. Despite feeling discouraged, they showed love and support to the mentally sick family member. In the relationship among the other children prior to the onset of the illness, closeness and harmony obtained the highest number of responses. Conflictual, loving and supportive relationships permeated in the relationships among the other children when the illness already developed. The transitional changes in the lives of the families shaped the different family relaionships described, particularly, prior to and after the onset of the disorder. As closeness, harmony, love and support defined the relationships, conflicts and other dysfunctions were determined to be existing in the family lives. The illness indeed brought unexpected and burdensome changes. However, also highly evident were the presence of conflicts and other differences among the other members that contributed to the dynamics that these families have.

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the past 30 years, there have been significant developments in theory and research relating family variables to various psychopathologies. The potential importance of such efforts is obviously great, given the implications that reliable and valid findings would hold for treatment and preventive inter ventions across a variety of settings and populations. The purpose of this volume is to present a critical evaluation of this field of inquiry through a detailed assessment of the theoretical perspectives, the methodological issues, and the substantive findings that have characterized family studies of psychopathology during the past several decades. The book is divided into four parts, each con taining contributions from leading researchers and theorists in the field. The first part, "Background," presents a review of the major streams of influence that have shaped the development and the present character of the field. The second part, "Conceptual Foundations," contains presentations of gen eral models and orientations relevant to family studies of psychopathology. In most cases, a particular theoretical perspective provides the primary underpin ning of the approach, the exception to this format being the family model of David Reiss based on the concept of the family paradigm. The major objective of this part is to present a broad yet detailed set of chapters that address the conceptual status of the field. It is hoped that this material will provide a rich background against which subsequent discussions of specific theories, methods, and findings can be more fully appreciated.

Book Synopsis Patients' Perception of Family Involvement and Its Relationship to Medication Adherence for Persons with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders by : Elaine M. Edelman
Download or read book Patients' Perception of Family Involvement and Its Relationship to Medication Adherence for Persons with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders written by Elaine M. Edelman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been a consistent finding in the literature on patients with schizophrenia that poor medication adherence precipitates relapse of psychiatric symptoms. One of the most consistent findings in the research is that patients diagnosed with schizophrenic disorders who have close ties to family members that are critical of them tend to have much higher rates of relapse. The question of how affectionate and/or supportive family relationships impact psychiatric stability remains. This dissertation examined the connection between perception of family relationships and medication adherence among patients with schizophrenia. Utilizing the Rutgers Hospital and Community Survey, this study looked at the follow up surveys of 182 patients who were on oral anti-psychotic medications and who reported at least one family relationship. Data were analyzed using the patients' responses to questions about how they perceive their family relationships as well as their responses about their medication adherence in the previous two weeks and the previous three months. Chi-square and logistic regression were performed, while controlling for age, race, education, gender, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale scores, Global Assessment Scale scores, side effects, substance abuse, therapeutic alliance, housing status, and objective family involvement scores (which measured the family's involvement behaviors while the patient had been hospitalized). The main hypothesis, that patients who perceive their families to be affectionate and/or high in instrumental support would have higher rates of adherence, was not supported. An objective measure of family involvement (which measured family behaviors such as visitation and participation in treatment when the patient was in the hospital) also did not correlate with medication adherence. This analysis did find that having a substance abuse diagnosis was a predictor of poor medication adherence and that a positive therapeutic alliance, when measured at the three month follow up, was a predictor of medication adherence. Limitations of this follow up treatment study include questionable validity and reliability of self report on both family relationships and medication adherence, loss of statistical power as variables were added into the regression, and possible memory problems related to the diagnosis of schizophrenia since both the illness and possibly the medication regimen may impact memory. However, it is possible, since the objective family involvement score also did not yield a relationship to medication adherence, that positive family relationships do not translate into medication taking behavior.
