Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Bible's most compelling characters is Esther, who started as a Jewish orphan girl and ended up becoming the queen of Persia. Yet her promotion to the palace was not based on looks, talent, wealth, or pedigree. Esther qualified to be queen because she was a standard setter--an individual with exemplary character and uncompromising integrity. Today, more than ever, the world is in need of standard setters who will prioritize God's kingdom purposes and act as an example for their peers. God is calling all Esthers--those whose character is worthy not only to take them to the palace but to keep them there, as well. In Pathway to the Palace, Danette Joy Crawford explores the particular traits of Esther that qualified her to set a standard in the kingdom, including obedience, humility, integrity, and focus. When you fine-tune your own character through the steps she sets forth, based on the example of Esther, then you, too, can ascend to a place of influence and set the standard for your generation. God is calling all Esthers to report to the palace. Answer His call today!

Book excerpt: In the hamlet of Pookkudi in Tamil Nadu, an archaeological team excavates a mysterious statuette of a woman in black granite. The localities seem to know who the woman was, and folklores about her life are well-known and the team too is convinced of these. Yet, Ananthan a young archaeologist in the team, keeps questioning the authenticity of these claims. In the interregnum of a fortnight awaiting the carbon dating result, Ananthan pays a visit to his octogenarian grandfather whose health is in a sinking state. The old man, a former professor, has written a novel based on the history of Travancore and Tamil Nadu. The story is set two hundred years ago around the unnatural death of Ranganatha Deekshithar, a famous musician, and Kaveri, an eminent dancer, who is convicted of this murder by the royal police. He wrote the story based on the facts revealed to him and the assumptions he could make thereof. But he always felt there was something amiss. He believes that unless the story is cleared, his soul would not leave the nest of his body. He wants his scion, Ananthan, to take up the mission of rewriting it in line with historical facts so that he can die peacefully. From then on, Ananthan traverses through the dark recesses of history, which is embellished by music, dance, love, deception, revenge, and murder. What is the real story? Will the carbon dating results prove his theory to be correct? Will he be able to unfold the mystery and find who committed the murder, how, and why?

Book excerpt: A moment of intense silence followed and then the Rigden spoke up, his voice even: ÔYou have all been called today before the sacred court and from now, in every breath, in every heartbeat, in the shadow of every moment, in the intensity of the thoughtless state, in life, and in not-life, in physical or subtle form, we declare you our emissaries, our sacred envoys to the world of men. Shambala has a task for youÉÕ Lama Ozer and hisÊnovitiate Tashi leave the hidden monastery where they have lived all their livesÊin answer to a call from the legendary kingdom of Shambala received by the lama while deep in trance. Battling the freezing cold and snow of high, mist-laden mountain passes and the many evil forces that thwart their progress, they trek through Sikkim and Tibet to arrive at the Silver Fortress. Here they meet a host of divine and dark celestial beings, including the golden dakini, Yeshe Nam Lha, daughter of the Goddess Tara; Prince A-KarO, heir to the Lha Empire; and Prince Narasimha, heir to the Rigdens and the Shambala legacy. Both the princes are YesheÕs guardians and suitors, and she must travel with them to Earth where it is decreed that her child, Maitreya, the saviour, will be born. But before that happens they have the Asur forces to combat, and the dark prince Arden, who holds Yeshe captive, enthralled by his brooding menace, bewitched by his spell. Drawing richly from the vast pantheon of otherworldly beings that populate the myths of the Mahayana school of Buddhism, Path of the Swan, the first part of the surreally beautiful Tibetan-Buddhist fantasy series The Maitreya Chronicles, is a mesmerizingÊsaga of the battle between celestials and dark forces, and the descent of the celestials to Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial China’s dynastic legal codes provide a wealth of information for historians, social scientists, and scholars of comparative law and of literary, cultural, and legal history. Until now, only the Tang (618–907 C.E.) and Qing (1644–1911 C.E.) codes have been available in English translation. The present book is the first English translation of The Great Ming Code (Da Ming lu), which reached its final form in 1397. The translation is preceded by an introductory essay that places the Code in historical context, explores its codification process, and examines its structure and contents. A glossary of Chinese terms is also provided. One of the most important law codes in Chinese history, The Great Ming Code represents a break with the past, following the alien-ruled Yuan (Mongol) dynasty, and the flourishing of culture under the Ming, the last great Han-ruled dynasty. It was also a model for the Qing code, which followed it, and is a fundamental source for understanding Chinese society and culture. The Code regulated all the perceived major aspects of social affairs, aiming at the harmony of political, economic, military, familial, ritual, international, and legal relations in the empire and cosmic relations in the universe. The all-encompassing nature of the Code makes it an encyclopedic document, providing rich materials on Ming history. Because of the pervasiveness of legal proceedings in the culture generally, the Code has relevance far beyond the specialized realm of Chinese legal studies. The basic value system and social norms that the Code imposed became so thoroughly ingrained in Chinese society that the Manchus, who conquered China and established the Qing dynasty, chose to continue the Code in force with only minor changes. The Code made a considerable impact on the legal cultures of other East Asian countries: Yi dynasty Korea, Le dynasty Vietnam, and late Tokugawa and early Meiji Japan. Examining why and how some rules in the Code were adopted and others rejected in these countries will certainly enhance our understanding of the shared culture and indigenous identities in East Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one places 'Wednesday's Child' under the microscope it plainly reveals that Marcus Green was failing in the American way of life during the early 1970's, and chose to leave the Country of his birth , rather than to continue dwelling in the land which had brought about the demise of the three young black men whom he had known since childhood. Each of them had been drawn into the world of drugs and supposedly easy money , only to discover that all that really awaited them was an early ticket to the graveyard. Marcus choosing to span an ocean could not know what awaited him on the other side of that great expanse of water. Suddenly thrust into a culture as different as chalk is to cheese he had to adapt or perish. In a world where money, education, and social connections are enabled to bring even the most naive person safe harbor and protection, Marcus was bereft in every area. He truly became a child of providence and one dependent on the wind blowing in the right direction. This is as much about the sometimes invisible goodness of God, as it is about the visible kindness and open generosity of the elderly German woman who received him into her home, without an ulterior motive. Further to this tale of wonderment, it is also about innocent love, and how such love can be found with those outside of ones league, or realm of understanding, causing Marcus to challenge his personal strengths and weaknesses with a woman of unusual power, virtually on a daily basis. Also an underlying story of the sophisticated and worldly African American society living in Great Britain during the nineteen seventies, and how Marcus had to strap himself in for the jet set ride of his young life, which he had unexpectedly stumbled upon. Finally losing at love, yet gaining in prosperity and notoriety he is forced to return to the United States, ostensibly to bask in the limelight, but really to meet the true love of his life, and his real destiny as a human being.
