Book Synopsis Pathways for Peace by : United Nations;World Bank
Download or read book Pathways for Peace written by United Nations;World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent conflicts today are complex and increasingly protracted, involving more nonstate groups and regional and international actors. It is estimated that by 2030—the horizon set by the international community for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—more than half of the world’s poor will be living in countries affected by high levels of violence. Information and communication technology, population movements, and climate change are also creating shared risks that must be managed at both national and international levels. Pathways for Peace is a joint United Nations†“World Bank Group study that originates from the conviction that the international community’s attention must urgently be refocused on prevention. A scaled-up system for preventive action would save between US$5 billion and US$70 billion per year, which could be reinvested in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of populations. The study aims to improve the way in which domestic development processes interact with security, diplomacy, mediation, and other efforts to prevent conflicts from becoming violent. It stresses the importance of grievances related to exclusion—from access to power, natural resources, security and justice, for example—that are at the root of many violent conflicts today. Based on a review of cases in which prevention has been successful, the study makes recommendations for countries facing emerging risks of violent conflict as well as for the international community. Development policies and programs must be a core part of preventive efforts; when risks are high or building up, inclusive solutions through dialogue, adapted macroeconomic policies, institutional reform, and redistributive policies are required. Inclusion is key, and preventive action needs to adopt a more people-centered approach that includes mainstreaming citizen engagement. Enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision making is fundamental to sustaining peace, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people.

Book Synopsis Be Not Afraid-Winter Edition Dec/Jan/Feb 2018-19 by : Richard Havermale
Download or read book Be Not Afraid-Winter Edition Dec/Jan/Feb 2018-19 written by Richard Havermale and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the continuation of my book series from my blog www.icemanforchrist.org which is based on more than 365 references in the Bible to fear, and dread and our response to them. St Pope John Paul II knew that our God encourages us to "Be Not Afraid" and told us so. To do this we must actively seek holiness and be in the presence of our Lord and talk to Him. I recommend you develop the habit of spending 10 to 15 minutes a day with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or if that is not available some other quiet place where you can be in the company of our Lord. Read the daily entry and reflect on it asking our Lord and His mother to talk to your heart and reveal to you the will of the Father and then DO IT.
Book Synopsis Cancer Entangled by : Rikke Sand Andersen
Download or read book Cancer Entangled written by Rikke Sand Andersen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer Entangled explores the shifts that took place in Denmark around the millennium, when health promoters set out to minimize delays in cancer diagnoses in hope of improving cancer survival. The authors suggest a temporal reframing of cancer control that emphasizes the importance of focusing on how people – potential patients as well as health care professionals – experience and anticipate cancer before a diagnosis or a prediction has been made. This argument compellingly challenges and augments anthropological work on cancer control that has privileged attention to the productive role of science and technology and to life with cancer or cancer risk. By offering rich ethnographic insights into the introduction of the first cancer vaccine, cancer signs and symptoms, public discourses on delays, social class and care seeking, cancer suspicion in the clinic, as well as the work on fast-track referral – the book convincingly situates cancer control in an ethical registrar involving attention to acceleration and time, showing how cancer waiting times become an index of the "state of the nation".

Book Synopsis Pathways and Consequences of Legal Irregularity by : Erik R. Vickstrom
Download or read book Pathways and Consequences of Legal Irregularity written by Erik R. Vickstrom and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a unique study of the complexities and consequences of irregular legal status of Senegalese migrants in Europe. It employs sophisticated quantitative methods to analyze unique life-history data to produce policy-relevant conclusions. Using the MAFE dataset as empirical evidence, the book focuses on the legal paths of Senegalese migrants in three different European countries. It shows how multiple contexts of reception produce pathways into irregular legal status and how the resulting complex configurations of irregular status shape migrants’ economic integration into their host societies as well as their ongoing participation in the development of their sending societies. The book thereby increases our understanding of the functioning of African migration systems and the corresponding inclusion patterns in Europe. As such this book will be of interest to scholars working in migration studies, policy makers, and legal professionals.

Book Synopsis Pathways to Fiscal Reform in the United States by : John W. Diamond
Download or read book Pathways to Fiscal Reform in the United States written by John W. Diamond and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts discuss fiscal reforms intended to address the U.S. debt problem, examining entitlements, federal budgetary processes, and individual and corporate income taxes. The United States and other advanced economies in the Eurozone and elsewhere face severe fiscal problems. The United States is on an unsustainable dynamic path; absent corrective fiscal policies, federal deficits and debts relative to gross domestic product will continue to increase dramatically. In this book, experts consider possible fiscal reforms aimed at addressing the debt problem, focusing on entitlement programs, budgetary issues and processes, and individual and corporate income tax reform. The contributors address such topics as the interaction of rising health care costs and the level of federal expenditures; alternative methods for evaluating the fiscal health and sustainability of Social Security; the effectiveness of budgetary constraints imposed on the states, including balanced budget amendments and debt ceilings; approaches to curtailing individual tax expenditures and methods for increasing the progressivity of the tax system; and the effects of traditional base-broadening, rate-reducing corporate income tax reforms. Book Synopsis Roma in Ukraine - A time for action: priorities and pathways for an effective integration policy by : Halyna Bocheva
Download or read book Roma in Ukraine - A time for action: priorities and pathways for an effective integration policy written by Halyna Bocheva and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roma in Ukraine have a long history of discrimination that, despite some progress in recent years, continues to this day. Now more than ever is the time to act. The current Roma Integration Strategy for Ukraine ends in 2020 and despite positive intentions the violent anti-Roma attacks of 2018 have only highlighted the serious vulnerability and marginalisation of many Roma in Ukraine. While poverty, isolation and high levels of illiteracy contribute to their destitution, discrimination against Roma at every level of society, including among police, prosecutors and officials, also plays an important part in perpetuating their secondary status. This is illustrated by the limited representation of Roma in public life in Ukraine and the increasing prevalence of hate speech and violence by far-right groups – attacks enabled in large part by the impunity that many perpetrators appear to enjoy. While Ukraine has taken a number of steps to amend its legislation in line with international standards and publicly stated its commitment to promoting the inclusion of Roma and other minorities, in practice much of these promises remain unrealized. The ability of the Ukrainian government to achieve these ambitions in future will therefore provide an important gauge on the broader transition of the country to human rights, democracy and social progress.
