Book excerpt: This open access book presents a comprehensive overview of dilated cardiomyopathy, providing readers with practical guidelines for its clinical management. The first part of the book analyzes in detail the disease’s pathophysiology, its diagnostic work up as well as the prognostic stratification, and illustrates the role of genetics and gene-environment interaction. The second part presents current and future treatment options, highlighting the importance of long-term and individualized treatments and follow-up. Furthermore, it discusses open issues, such as the apparent healing phenomenon, the early prognosis of arrhythmic events or the use of genetic testing in clinical practice. Offering a multidisciplinary approach for optimizing the clinical management of DCM, this book is an invaluable aid not only for the clinical cardiologists, but for all physicians involved in the care of this challenging disease.

Book excerpt: Cellular and Molecular Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease focuses on the pathophysiology of common cardiovascular disease in the context of its underlying mechanisms and molecular biology. This book has been developed from the editors' experiences teaching an advanced cardiovascular pathology course for PhD trainees in the biomedical sciences, and trainees in cardiology, pathology, public health, and veterinary medicine. No other single text-reference combines clinical cardiology and cardiovascular pathology with enough molecular content for graduate students in both biomedical research and clinical departments. The text is complemented and supported by a rich variety of photomicrographs, diagrams of molecular relationships, and tables. It is uniquely useful to a wide audience of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in areas from pathology to physiology, genetics, pharmacology, and more, as well as medical residents in pathology, laboratory medicine, internal medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and cardiology. Explains how to identify cardiovascular pathologies and compare with normal physiology to aid research Gives concise explanations of key issues and background reading suggestions Covers molecular bases of diseases for better understanding of molecular events that precede or accompany the development of pathology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to give an up to date account of recent developments in the field of cardiomyopathy. Many authors, all experienced workers in their fields, - most from Germany - have contributed to this volume. It would appear that the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy is now made more often than it was 10 years ago. The reason for this is probably not that the incidence of the disease has increased, but that it is better recognized. Where conventional clinical investigation may have failed to define the underlying disease process in a given patient, improved or more widely used diagnostic tools, such as selective coronary arteriography and endomyocardial biopsies, have contributed greatly to proper diagnosis. Furthermore, uniformity of terminology has also taken place during the last few years, permitting more accurate categorization of patients suffering from this entity. The difficult subject of terminology is discussed in a special section.

The present volume considers general aspects of cardiac disease and is divided into three distinct sections covering cardiac risk, cardiorenal pathology, and novel interventional surgical techniques. The chapters offer insight into the current state of the art with respect to the risks of developing cardiovascular diseases, maintenance of patent vascular access in patients with the cardiorenal syndrome, and a plethora of novel interventional technologies all aimed at salvaging damaged tissue and improving prognosis and reducing mortality. This volume of 18 chapters is intended for general medical and biomedical students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It also offers insightful updates on recent advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of cardiac diseases and the new techniques added to the medical armamentarium to improve the outcomes and prevent mortality and would be of interest to those working in academia and healthcare science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First described in 1907 by Schicke but recognized as a clinical entity only as recently as 1958, when Teare published the pathologic findings in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HeM), an explosion of knowledge about this fascinating disease has occurred, which has caused a profound evolution of our understanding of its broad pathophysiologic and clinical spectrum. Progress has been particularly rapid in the past few years when M-mode echocardiography, and more recently 2-dimen sional echocardiography have been applied to the study ofHCM. In addition to new insights as to what the disease is, there has been enormous progress concerning its treatment, with the application of beta-adrenergic blocking agents and surgical relief of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Although these approaches have led to great strides in the symptomatic control of the disease, many patients' symptoms have remained refactory to medical and surgical therapy. Most discouragingly, sudden death still occurs, even in patients on large doses of beta-blocking agents and in patients who have had surgical relief of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.

This book mainly focuses on catecholamines and stress, presenting papers specifically discussing the brain, neurohumoral regulation in stress, and changes induced by stress. A set of papers tackle the catecholamine synthesizing and degrading enzymes under stress. Other papers are devoted to topics on catecholamine synthesis and degradation under stress; release, level, and excretion of catecholamines in stress; and catecholamines and stress in man. This text will be invaluable to students and experts in physiology, biology, and related fields.
