Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patents and Chemical Research Progress in industrial chemical research and invention is intimately dependent on the efficiency of the patent system. Patent law deals with such complex problems that a heavy responsibility is thus cast upon practitioners of the law. Therefore it is most desirable that chemists should familiarise themselves with the leading principles of patent law; first, to enable them to co-operate with the patent agent and thus contribute to the object of obtaining secure protection for their inventions, and, second, so that their criticism will stimulate patent agents to maintain the highest level of professional skill. In this way, better work will be done, and the greatest benefits will be derived from the patent system. It is hoped that this book will be helpful to those engaged in industrial research work, and especially to directors of research; but the problems of patent law are so inherently fascinating that those engaged in academic research may find some points of interest. Since any legal readers may desire to study the decided cases, I have added references to the original. Reports of Patent Cases (R.P.C.). I have not hesitated to employ hypothetical cases freely for purposes of illustration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As individuals and companies realise the importance of their inventions, issues surrounding patent laws and practices are taking centre stage around the world. Patent Strategy introduces researchers to patent applications and patent portfolios. With minimum use of ‘legal jargon’ it provides the technical professional with the assistance and advice they require to understand the legal complexities that they may encounter before and during a patent application. It also discusses the responsibilities of the researcher after patent applications have been filed and the role the researcher can play in the maintenance of a global patent estate. This updated edition of the best selling book has been expanded to keep pace with modern day movements and addresses the global issue surrounding intellectual property. Including new information on areas such as software and biotechnology it shows the techniques that can be used by individuals and academic inventors to protect their work and is the ideal reference source. Bridges the gap between the legal system and scientific research and avoids legal jargon Details the reasons behind patents, their importance and relevance to all researchers and the strategy needed for filing for a patent Focuses on the strategy and reasons rather than just being a textbook of patent law Presents an overview of tools a researcher can use while working with a patent attorney or agent Adopts a readable style that explains the basics right up to developing a strategy Essential reading for all those who wish to keep pace and protect their work Reviews from previous edition: "...I can recommend it for technology managing types. Does a nice job of explaining many aspects of the patent system and patent strategies with a minimum of jargon and case citations..." —Internet Patent News "...provides an enlightened approach to a complex subject. It is relatively easy to read and follow..." — Polymers Paint and Colour Journal "This handy book provides the researcher with useful guidance on how to maximize the benefit of their inventiveness to themselves and their organization". —Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology

Book excerpt: Understanding intellectual property, safeguarding your ideas Intellectual property is constantly at risk, and the protection of chemical science and technology through the patenting process allows individuals and companies to protect their hard work. But in order to truly be able to protect your ideas, you need to understand the basics of patenting for yourself. A practical handbook designed to empower inventors like you to write your own patent application drafts in conjunction with an attorney, Writing Chemistry Patents and Intellectual Property: A Practical Guide presents a brand new methodology for success. Based on a short course author Francis J. Waller gives for the American Chemical Society, the book teaches you how to structure a literature search, to educate the patent examiner on your work, to prepare an application that can be easily duplicated, and to understand what goes on behind the scenes during the patent examiner's rejection process. Providing essential insights, invaluable strategies, and applicable, real-world examples designed to maximize the chances that a patent will be accepted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Writing Chemistry Patents and Intellectual Property is the book you need if you want to keep your work protected.

Book excerpt: "Patents play animportantrole in the chemical enterprise, both as a means for protecting the fruits of research and development from unauthorized use by competitors and as a major component of the chemical literature. Historically, patent laws around the world have varied in significant ways from country to country, with United States patent applications kept in secrecy until grant of a patent and correspondence between patent applicants and patent offices kept in closed files. Changes in laws since the late 20th century have introduced major differences in theavailability of patent documents and information about the progress of the patent procedure...In light of all these changes, the Subcommittee on Education and Outreach of the ACS Joint Board-Council Committee on Patents and Related Matters prepared this fourth edition of What Every Chemist Should Know About Patents toupdate the Committee’s 2002 edition"--Foreward.
