Book excerpt: In Passed Over and Pissed Off, Dr. Mia Mulrennan reveals that Generation X is fed up and frustrated. Corporate America has turned a deaf ear for too long. Baby Boomers have retained their positions of power longer than anyone anticipated, and are now focusing their attention on grooming the Millennials in order to "leave a legacy" before they retire. Sandwiched between two behemoth generations, the members of Generation X are the outnumbered, seldom-mentioned, underdog generation. Many Gen Xers are tired of patiently waiting for their turn to lead, languishing in non-leadership roles, nose to the grindstone, doing everything right, but feeling overlooked and unappreciated. They have been patiently waiting, but they aren't going to wait forever. Can we stand a Gen-Xodus?

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book excerpt: Something Not Broken By: Marissa Dara Foster About the Book Petra, a young career woman, suddenly and inexplicably finds herself in the midst of an early “midlife” crisis, ending her eight-year relationship and losing her mojo at her dream job as a book editor. Woven together is present day third-person narrative and first person memories, dreams, and journaling, Something Not Broken gives readers the opportunity to become intimately acquainted with Petra’s inner life, while challenging them to unwrap the mysteries of the past that shaped her, much as Petra herself is doing. We all go on the journey with her. These characters are all flawed, and searching for, or at least desiring something else, and yet on the surface, they have everything. The author hopes this story will emotionally resonate with readers long after they have forgotten the words. Her wish is that they’ll be less critical of themselves and others, aiming to understand before judging.

Book excerpt: Print and public-radio journalist Wagner describes rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina...Despite Kafkaesque experiences with the infamous bureaucratic mess that threatened to undo New Orleans once and for all, the couple held on to their optimism for the city and their little piece of it. Wagner captures the nostalgia, the heartbreak and the friendships spawned in Katrina's turbulent aftermath with raw emotional honesty free of sentimentality. Unflinching, humorous and heartfelt. --Kirkus Reviews The cliché New Orleans gets into people's blood happens to be very true–just not always convenient. For Cheryl Wagner, along with her indie-band boyfriend, a few eccentric pals, and two aging basset hounds, abandoning the city she loved wasn't an option. This is the story of Cheryl's disturbing surprise view from her front porch after she moved back home to find everything she treasured in shambles. . .and her determined, absurd, and darkly funny three-year journey of trying to piece it all back together. In the same heartfelt and hilarious voice that has drawn thousands of listeners to her broadcasts on Public Radio International's This American Life, Wagner shares her unique yet universal story of rebuilding a life after it's been flooded, dried, and died. . . "Dark, funny, generous and jarring--occasionally tragic but never sentimental." --Paul Tough, author of Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada's Quest to Change Harlem and America "A wonderful, touching, thoughtful, crazy, loving book." --Frederick Barthelme, author of Waveland and eleven other works of fiction including Elroy Nights, a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and a New York Times Notable Book "A wild, blood and guts lived-to-tell-all memoir." --Porochista Khakpour, author of Sons and Other Flammable Objects "The book would be heartbreaking if it weren't so funny, so clear-eyed, and so beautifully fierce." --James Whorton Jr., author of Frankland "I love it." -- Pete Jordan, author of Dishwasher: One Man's Quest to Wash Dishes in Fifty States "Imagine if Jack Kerouac had lived through the flood and wrote you a long, personal letter from the wreckage." --Jonathan Goldstein, author of Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bible! and Host of CBC's and PRI's radio show WireTap "Wagner writes with honesty and humor." --Annie Choi, author of Happy Birthday or Whatever "A work of art, unsparing of everything, including itself." --Jack Pendarvis, author of Awesome

Book excerpt: Because of the differing beliefs on how Australia should be governed in the future, the country splits in two separate nations—to the south, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia becoming known as Greater Australia, and Queensland the Northern Territory and Western Australia, Northern Australia. The northern nation continues to use the old Westminster form of government, and upon review of all past registration and procedures becomes prosperous and populated by freedom-loving and happy people, while to the south, the land is governed in such a way that the needs of the environment is considered as paramount. The design of the southern government can be considered to be inefficient, cumbersome, and impractical, allowing the real power being usurped by radicals, anarchists, and power hungry near megalomaniacs. A large area of western New South Wales has been given over to indigenous people in which to live in their traditional ways. To assist in this, all white people and their improvements have been removed. Initially, this causes great suffering and deaths among the indigenous people who have become dependent on the social services and the lifestyle or way of life of the whites. When they gain a form of organisation, they actually revert to a form of living similar to that which existed prior to white settlement. Ron, in his travels escaping from Southern Australia, meets up with these people and lives with them for a while. An expedition is sent to this area from the north, brought on because of a sudden collapse in population numbers because of disease, Ron finds himself conscripted as leader. The book deals with the achievements of the expedition, the people involved, especially Ron and his lover, Gwen, and those who try to sabotage it or take share of the glory.

Book excerpt: In this book, David Lehman, the longtime series editor of the Best American Poetry, offers a masterclass in writing in form and collaborative composition. An inspired compilation of his weekly column on the American Scholar website, Next Line, Please makes the case for poetry open to all. Next Line, Please gathers in one place the popular column’s plethora of exercises and prompts that Lehman designed to unlock the imaginations of poets and creative writers. He offers his generous and playful mentorship on forms such as the sonnet, haiku, tanka, sestina, limerick, and the cento and shares strategies for how to build one line from the last. This groundbreaking book shows how pop-up crowds of poets can inspire one another, making art, with what poet and guest editor Angela Ball refers to as "spontaneous feats of language." How can poetry thrive in the digital age? Next Line, Please shows the way. Lehman writes, "There is something magical about poetry, and though we think of the poet as working alone, working in the dark, it is all the better when a community of like-minded individuals emerges, sharing their joy in the written word."

Over the years, his travels and education, coupled with his Christian upbringing and his undergraduate and postgraduate studies, have cultivated his personal political views. Those views and observations are the focus of this book. His perspective is that of someone raised with Midwestern and Christian values, which he feels differs greatly from those on the East and West Coasts, as well as in most large cities. Those who have lived their lives through their school years and into early adulthood have a moral view of life and what it means to be a responsible citizen who contributes to our American society that clearly differs from the liberal members of our country. He asks straightforward questions that deal with our current political direction, from a Christian point of view. He also points out fallacies that are ever present in today's political system, along with challenging today's Christians to evaluate the politicians and political party they support against the biblical teachings in the Old and New Testament, as well as the Ten Commandments. If you find they fall short of those teachings, maybe a change is in order.

Book excerpt: In 1968, during a forty hour period, the Air Force flew 189 sorties to rescue a Navy A-7 pilot, call sign Streetcar 304, in one of the largest rescue efforts of the Vietnam War. Before it ended, four pilots had ejected, seven planes were lost or heavily damaged, and, at one point, seven airmen awaited rescue behind enemy lines. Streetcar 304 now provides his personal narrative about the event. On his very first combat mission, Fields catapulted off the USS America, flew to Laos, dropped his bombs in the midst of an enemy trap and was shot down. Streetcar describes his last tearful farewell night at home with his wife, his tracer ridden bomb runs and a last moment ejection. Cringe when he describes being shot at while floating down in his parachute. Ride along in the cockpit of two rescue pilots as enemy tracers zoom upward and shoot each one down. Feel your heart skip a beat as Streetcar and one Air Force pilot separately evade numerous close encounters with Phatet Lao guerillas, are nearly killed time and again by friendly bombs, and deal with the stress of jungle animals and lack of sleep. Suffer with his wife when she receives word that he is down, fate unknown, and then describes her own forty hours of suspense. Relate to the pilots who are ordered to make one final rescue attempt. Shed a tear with Streetcar when one rescuer is captured by the enemy. Experience the final harrowing rescue attempt during which Fields is wounded by a friendly bomb.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hilarious and controversial host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest, most opinionated, and most necessary book ever—a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture. Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead. The book was inspired by the “editorial” Bill delivers at the end of each episode of Real Time. These editorials are direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics, and what’s happening in the world. To put this book together, Maher reviewed more than a decade of his editorials, rewriting, reimagining, and updating them, and adding new material to speak exactly to the moment we’re in. Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health—Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.
