Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to better understand the phenomenon of HIV in a country that has faced the fullest might of the disease and yet, after first faltering, has made more progress than any other country in the world in its response to HIV. It aims to reflect the complexity of this narrative and the range of widely differing insights by featuring what is likely the largest number of contributors in a single publication on the subject in South Africa, as well as a full spectrum of specialised areas, ranging from high-end science to personal reflections.

Book Synopsis Regional Assessment on HIV-prevention Needs of Migrant and Mobile Populations in Southern Africa by :
Download or read book Regional Assessment on HIV-prevention Needs of Migrant and Mobile Populations in Southern Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Southern Africa continues to bear a disproportionate share of the global burden of HIV: 35% of HIV infections and 38% of AIDS-related deaths in 2007 occurred in this sub-region\2019 (UNAIDS, 2008b: 32). Southern Africa also experiences high levels of population movement, voluntary or forced, and comprises a diversity of people, including contract labor migrants, irregular migrants, families of migrants, refugees, trafficked persons and mobile workers such as truck drivers and mine workers. Furthermore, migrants have loved ones back home, who may face their own vulnerabilities, as the family breadwinner is away. This regional assessment, commissioned by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and funded by the PEPFAR Southern Africa Prevention Initiative, examines the migration patterns and the HIV vulnerabilities faced by migrants and mobile workers in the southern Africa region. It also investigates the main challenges faced by these groups in accessing HIV-prevention services. Finally, the report identifi es opportunities for programming and prioritizes key activities that should be pursued in the region so as to lessen the overall HIV vulnerabilities of migrants, mobile workers and the communities within which they interact"--Page 10.

Book Synopsis Zimbabwe's New Diaspora by : JoAnn McGregor
Download or read book Zimbabwe's New Diaspora written by JoAnn McGregor and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zimbabwe's crisis since 2000 has produced a dramatic global scattering of people. This volume investigates this enforced dispersal, and the processes shaping the emergence of a new "diaspora" of Zimbabweans abroad, focusing on the most important concentrations in South Africa and in Britain. Not only is this the first book on the diasporic connections created through Zimbabwe's multifaceted crisis, but it also offers an innovative combination of research on the political, economic, cultural and legal dimensions of movement across borders and survival thereafter with a discussion of shifting identities and cultural change. It highlights the ways in which new movements are connected to older flows, and how displacements across physical borders are intimately linked to the reworking of conceptual borders in both sending and receiving states. The book is essential reading for researchers/students in migration, diaspora and postcolonial literary studies.
