Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A joint experimental and numerical study of droplet dispersion in a round turbulent jet has been initiated. Laser light scattering was used to measure the motion of non-vaporizing droplets of water and hexadecane in an isothermal turbulent jet of air. The results indicated that an initial radial velocity fluctuation in the droplet motion at the jet exit can serve to increase significantly the dispersion of droplets larger than 100 microns. Vortex dynamics simulations of the near region of the jet showed that Basset, virtual mass and pressure gradient forces may be neglected for small droplets but may need to be accounted for, particularly at high pressure, with large droplets (> 100 microns) even if the drop to gas density ratio is close to one. A stochastic simulation of particle dispersion revealed that the Reynolds stresses or velocity correlations in this flow do not contribute significantly to particle dispersion. Keywords: Turbulent shear flows, Particle dispersion, Vortex dynamics, Stochastic simulation. (jhd).

This book was released on 2015 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented are experimental measurements of one and two-particle dispersion in a turbulent shear flow. The baseline flow is a well-characterized high Reynolds number turbulent submerged round jet. Buoyant air bubbles and canola oil droplets were injected into the jet within the self-similar region at five injection locations and five jet Reynolds numbers ranging from 18,000 to 34,000. Images of two particles, injected simultaneously, were obtained from high-speed shadowgraphy. The particles were then tracked using a four-frame predictive algorithm. The influence of mean shear and turbulent fluctuations on dispersion is analyzed for initial positions where a mean velocity shear is superimposed on turbulent fluctuations. The results were analyzed to determine the influence of the density ratio, the non-dimensional shear rate, Reynolds number, and the turbulence intensity (these last three associated with the location of injection) on single-particle and two-particle dispersion.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport of heavy, polydispersed particles and the inter-phase transfer of kinetic energy is measured experimentally in a turbulent shear layer. Specifically, fundamental/subharmonic forcing and conditional-averaging techniques were used to study the particle/turbulence interaction with the large-scale, spanwise, coherent vortices, starting from their initial roll-up through the first pairing event. It is shown that the pairing event plays a homogenizing role on the particulate field, but the amount of homogenization is strongly dependent upon the particle's viscous relaxation time, the eddy turnover time, as well as the time the particles are allowed to interact with each scale prior to a pairing event. Thus, even though the smaller size particles become well-mixed across the structure, the larger sizes are still dispersed in an inhomogeneous fashion. The dispersed/carrier phase coupling was examined through the measurement of conditionally-averaged kinetic energy transfer (which results from the work done to accelerate or decelerate the dispersed phase), as well as the conditionally-averaged particle dissipation (energy dissipated by shear deformation in the carrier phase due to the relative slip between the particles and the carrier fluid).

Book Synopsis Particle Dispersion by Order Motion in Mixing Layers by :
Download or read book Particle Dispersion by Order Motion in Mixing Layers written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiphase mixing in turbulent flows is a key element in many energy conversion and chemical processes. There is considerable need for improving the design and control of these processes. Free turbulent shear flows are the primary agents for particle mixing in these systems. Previous studies by this research group have shown that, if particle coupling effects are neglected, the organized vortex structures generated by these shear flows control the character of the particle mixing process. A coordinated experimental and numerical study is proposed to investigate the coupled effects of droplet mass and energy transfer on the turbulent multiphase mixing process in free shear flows. This study has important implications concerning the design of reacting flow systems. Experimental visualizations of the multiphase flow will be carried out using laser-sheet lighting and high speed photography. Local measurements of droplet size, velocity and concentration diagnostics, will be made with laser anemometry and phase Doppler diagnostics. Complementary analytical and numerical analyses will be carried out to assess the effect of coupling on vortex structure, stability and growth. The results of the proposed research will provide basic understanding concerning the coupled effects of particle concentration on the rate of multiphase mixing in turbulent flows. Information of this nature is essential to the improved designs of engineering systems with particulate or droplet flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1977. Thereafter the locations for the biennial symposium have alternated between the USA and Europe. However, the ninth Symposium on Turbu lent Shear Flows was awarded to Japan in recognition of the strong support researchers of the Pacific Rim countries have given previous symposia. The University of Kyoto was the host institution and the meeting was held in the Inter national Conference Hall. The Local Arrangements Committee did a superb job scheduling traditional Japanese dinners and arranging visits to the many cultural treasures in the Kyoto region. The meeting attracted more than 260 offers of papers. Thirty-three sessions were scheduled to accommodate the 138 papers accepted for oral presentation. In addition a poster session was scheduled on each of the three days to accommodate a total of 42 poster presentations. From the presentations at the symposium 24 have been selected for inclusion in this volume. The authors of these papers have revised them taking into consideration comments made during their oral presentation and recommendations made by the Editors. Four subject areas are identified, namely closures and fundamentals, free flows, wall flows, and combustion and recirculating flows. Eminent authorities have prepared introductory articles fot each topic to put the individual contributions in context with each other and with related research.
