A coagulation model is developed for destabilized particles in an isotropic turbulent flow. Simple binary collision mean free path concepts are employed and for monodisperse systems coagulation rate relations are derived for particle sizes less than and larger than the Kolmogorov microscale of turbulence. Polydisperse systems are also considered and some general results concerning their behavior are obtained. Also discussed are the effects of interparticle repulsion on the coagulation rates. Coagulation experiments are reported on inside fully developed turbulent pipe flows using an approximately monodisperse UCAR latex dispersion in which the particle sizes are less than the Kolmogorov microscale. The flow rate, destabilizer concentration and volume fraction of the dispersed phase were varied in these experiments. The experimental results for destablized particles are shown to agree very well with the theoretical predictions. Brownian motion coagulation experiments for partially destabilized systems are compared with the corresponding turbulent motion experiments and the results indicate that the coagulation efficiency does not appear to depend on the particle transport mode. Book excerpt: The existing theory of turbulent-accelerative coagulation applies only to particles so small that they respond to all fluid motions, including those of the smallest, most rapidly accelerating eddies (microscale eddies). The maximum particle diameter for which this theory applies is typically 5 to 10 microns. A review of coagulation and small-scale turbulence theory showed that the theory of turbulent-accelerative particle motion relative to the fluid and coagulation may be extended to particles whose relaxation times are greater than the period of microscale eddies. The extension is based on the concept that each such particle moves at a characteristic speed relative to the fluid, corresponding to the speed of the eddy size whose period equals the particle relaxation time. Thus for each particle size there is a 'resonant' eddy size. Different coagulation mechanisms were compared. Apparently the only situation in which turbulent-accelerative coagulation can be more important than gravitational coagulation, is in nuclear-explosion clouds. A method of numerical computation of coagulation due to all the mechanisms cited was developed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The motivation for the present work is to investigate particle-laden turbulent flows using accurate numerical simulations. In the present work, the carrier phase is modeled using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and the particles are tracked in a Lagrangian sense. Investigations of both one-way and two-way coupled particulate flows in homogeneous isotropic turbulence have been carried out. The phenomenon of interest in one-way coupled simulations is preferential accumulation, which refers to the tendency of heavy particles in isotropic turbulence to collect in regions of high strain and low vorticity. Several measures and mechanisms of accumulation have been reported in the literature often showing conflicting scaling with particle and fluid parameters. In the present study, accumulation has been quantified using several indicators to give a unified picture. The present work addresses the scaling of preferential accumulation with Reynolds number and suggests that while the spacing between particle clusters does exhibit a dependence on Reynolds number, the structure of particle clusters as viewed by individual particles shows little dependence on Reynolds number. The effect of adding a gravitational settling force on the particles has also been explored. While the gravity force tends to homogenize the particle distribution at low Stokes numbers, at high Stokes numbers it tends to arrange the originally random distribution into streaks in the direction of gravity. The ability of the Lorentz force to limit preferential accumulation has been the focus of the next part of the study. Charges are placed on particles to produce an electric field when the particles are inhomogeneously distributed. The electric field and thereby the Lorentz force tend to homogenize the particle distribution. It is interesting to note that the particle distribution attains a stationary state determined by the total amount of charge contained in the domain. It is demonstrated that in the presence of gravity, less amount of charge is required to homogenise particle distribution. Good agreement is observed for simulations of settling charged particles with experimental work. The modification of carrier phase turbulence by particles is studied formono-sized particles. Book excerpt: Pollutant and particle transport in estuaries is affected by a multitude of physical, chemical and biological processes. In this research the importance of equilibrium sorption and turbulent coagulation were studied. Sorption in estuaries was modeled using phenanthrene, bacterial extracellular polymer and kaolinite clay as surrogates for a hydrophobic organic pollutant, dissolved organic matter and inorganic suspended sediment, respectively. Experiments over a range of estuarine salinities showed that ionic strength had the largest effect on the extent of sorption, while the effect of extracellular polymer coatings on the mineral surfaces was insignificant. Further calculations using typical estuarine suspended sediment concentrations indicated that equilibrium sorption could not fully account for the solid-solution phase distribution of hydrophobic organic compounds in the estuarine water column. For particles that are small compared to the length scales of turbulence, the rate of coagulation is related to the dynamics of the smallest turbulent eddies since they have the highest shear rate. Experimental and theoretical effort focused on determining the coagulation rate of spherical particles in isotropic turbulence. A pair diffusion approximation valid for rapidly fluctuating flows was used to calculate the rate of coagulation in a randomly varying isotropic linear flow field.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms that take place in pseudo turbulent particulate flows. In the present work we have considered the sedimentation of large numbers of spherical rigid particles in an initially quiescent flow field. We have performed direct numerical simulations employing an immersed boundary method for the representation of the fluid-solid interface. The results evidence that depending on the particle settling regime (i.e. Galileo number and particle-to-fluid density ratio) the particles may exhibit strong inhomogeneous spatial distribution. It is found that the particles are preferentially located in regions with downward fluid motion. The particles inside clusters experience larger settling velocities than the average. The flow in all flow cases is observed to exhibit characteristic features of pseudo-turbulence. The particle-induced flow field is further found to be highly anisotropic with dominant vertical components. The results indicate that, in the present flow configurations, the collective and mobility effects play significant role for the particle and fluid motion.
