The experiences they accumulate in sport are shaped by a variety of factors. A combination of personal factors (e.g., demographics), social factors (e.g., socializing sources and the support they provide), and structural factors (e.g., costs and accessible programs) uniquely shape each individual's experience. Since a variety of factors can shape that experience, it is useful to examine perceptions of the factors were significant in the creation of an individual's participation opportunities and experiences in sport. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to gain insight into the personal, social, and structural factors participants perceived were significant on their sport participation experiences throughout various stages of their lives; (b) to gain insight into the personal, social, and structural factors participants perceived were significant upon their children's sport experiences; and (c) to illustrate differences that exist among participants' own and their children's sport experiences. Eleven participants were involved in this study. Participants had firsthand experience in an organized sport during their youth and/or adolescence. Participants also had at least one child under the age of 13 who was active in an organized sport at the time of data collection. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Variety in participants' gender, race, age, household income, education, and occupation were present. Difference in participants' and their children's sport experiences emerged and were reported in five themes. Those themes are: Sources of Socialization, (b) Gendered Constructions Shaping Sport Experiences, (c) Parental Presence in Youth Sport, (d) Self-confidence and Skill, and (e) Structural Constraints upon Participation. These themes reflect variance in the sport experiences among this group of participants and their perceptions of their own and their children's experiences. The framework of this study utilized descriptive and hermeneutical inquiry. The descriptive element was expressed through a realist approach that relied on information learned from the participants (Creswell, 2007). Hermeneutical inquiry, which is concerned with interpretive understanding and context surrounding engagement in the particular act, was reflected through participants' assessments of their experiences.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine whether mothers and fathers differed in their sport socialization scores of their children as well as socialization differences in team versus individual sports. Participants were 117 parents of high school athletes who were asked to complete the Sport Socialization Questionnaire (Woolger, 1992). A total of three 2 (gender of parent) x 2 (gender of child) x 2 (type of sport) ANOVAs were conducted on the 'Verbal Encouragment', 'Unconditional Praise' and 'High Goals' subscales. Six 2 (gender of child) x 2 (type of sport) ANOVA were conducted on the 'No Goals/ Effort Goals', 'No Goals', 'Effort Goals', 'Directiveness', 'General Directiveness', and 'Specific Directiveness' subscales. Mothers and fathers socialized their children to sport similarly with the exception of more verbal encouragement to daughters as compared to sons. Fathers had more effort goals for their children who participated in team versus individual sports. In addition, fathers had more "No Goals" or enjoy goals for their children who participated in individual versus team sports. Future research should focus on the perceptions of children on parental socialization and how these perceptions influence the enjoyment levels of children in sport.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of parents and their children regarding the child's involvement in sports. The perceptions of the parents and their children were then compared in order to further examine discrepancies. 189 adolescents, ranging from eleven years old to nineteen years old, and 108 of their parents responded to a survey about their involvement in basketball. Using basketball as a medium over 29 variables, the child's perceptions of his/her parent, and the parent's perception of himself/herself and his/her relationship with the child we reviewed. Research showed the differences between the parents perceptions and the child's perceptions, gauging how parental support and parental pressure affected a child's success in and enjoyment of basketball. Parents tended to have more positive perceptions of themselves and their involvement in their child's extracurricular activities than what the child indicated he/she perceived. This suggests a gap in the parent-child relationship that can be further studied and used to educate parents and coaches. Recommendations for future study include expanding on this research and focusing on elite athletes in revenue sports in order to gauge their perceptions pressure and its effect on their enjoyment of and success in the game.

Given that parents serve as role models, providers, and as interpreters of sport and physical activity experiences, it is important to examine whether parents perceive certain activities to be more culturally appropriate than others. The purpose of this study was twofold: one, explore the types of value mothers of high school age African-American girls place on sport and physical activity participation; two, gain a better understanding of the mother's social perceptions of what activities are culturally appropriate for their daughters. Respondents ascribed each type of value to sport/physical activity. Utility value for sport and physical activity was characterized by health/appearance, occupying time/staying out of trouble, opportunity for scholarships/career opportunities. Interest value was characterized by affiliation, perceived acceptance, and mothers' physical activity/sport experience and family structure. Attainment value was characterized by self-perceptions, and cost was characterized by money, academics/time, injury, and appearance. Finally, in order for an activity to be deemed culturally appropriate, it must be accessible, provide opportunities for relatedness, and be perceived to be culturally appropriate by other members of the culture.
