Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Pedagogy - Orthopaedagogy and Special Education, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: One of the serious goals of the ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is to have an all-inclusive system that takes care of the needs of disabled children. The reason behind this is that the disability is one of the most-potent educational marginalization factors yet can come out as the least evident to the view of the stakeholders. It is tricky to handle because the stigmatization effect tends to lower the self-esteem of the disabled children. Disability does not only relate to impairment physically but also encompasses shortage of capability mentally; cognitive, emotional and psychologically such that society finds it hard to incorporate such individuals in the normal operation routines.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the family in early childhood special education has long been highlighted by researchers. Collaboration between families and professionals is vital to learning, and such efforts are also an integral factor in children's overall development. Some countries have enacted legislation requiring that educators include parents in infant and toddler inclusion and intervention programs. This mixed method study investigated the perceptions of Saudi parents toward collaboration with education professionals in early childhood special education including aspects such as knowledge of collaboration practices, communication, commitment, equality, trust, and respect. A survey of 272 parents of young children with disabilities was conducted. In addition, six parents of young children with disabilities were interviewed about their perceptions and experiences of collaboration to obtain information on their lived experiences. The study found that parents perceive they have some understanding of collaboration practices and that professionals respected parents' cultural values. However, some parents experienced some issues in professionals' communication skills. Some parents stated that they feel professionals have little skills in the areas of commitment, trust, and respect. Parents reported that professionals need more training overall and preparation to implement collaboration more effectively. Based on these findings, several recommendations for future practices and areas of research are provided.

Book Synopsis Advances in Special Education Research and Praxis in Selected Countries of Africa, Caribbean and the Middle East by : Kagendo Mutua
Download or read book Advances in Special Education Research and Praxis in Selected Countries of Africa, Caribbean and the Middle East written by Kagendo Mutua and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, cultural and educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, for instance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in many parts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higher levels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to the widely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practices in the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of difference in the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact that majority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the ideal of inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislative framework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of disabilities and limited funding sources. Chapters in this volume explore inclusive education from a variety of perspectives.

Book Synopsis THEORY IN SELF-DETERMINATION by : Michael L. Wehmeyer
Download or read book THEORY IN SELF-DETERMINATION written by Michael L. Wehmeyer and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive overview of three theoretical perspectives proposed during the past decade addressing the self-determination construct as it applies to the field of special education. The three models were selected primarily because they have focused on defining and categorizing self-determination for all students with disabilities, including students with mental retardation and other cognitive disabilities. These models are intended to provide students and practitioners a solid grounding in self-determination theory. All models have been evaluated among students with cognitive disabilities but are applicable to all students with or without disabilities. The authors research each model and have applied their own theoretical framework to special education, ensuring that interventions to promote skills like problem solving, goal setting, decision making, and self-advocacy are in place for all students. By reading this text, the reader will gain a solid, theoretically based foundation in understanding the self-determination construct which ultimately supports the development of instructional interventions that enable students with disabilities to become self-determined. It will be useful as a text in upper undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, psychology, social work/welfare, general education, vocational rehabilitation and disability studies.
