This book was released on 2001-07-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly diverse social environment, misunderstandings often arise between practitioners in the helping professions and clients from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. This book investigates the culturally specific beliefs and child-rearing practices of five major racial/ethnic groups: African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and European Americans. Analyses of case vignettes illustrate the book's dual focus on the practitioners' own views in addition to those of their culturally diverse clients. Guidelines offer suggestions for effective engagement and work with culturally diverse families.

This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often in their careers, social workers will encounter clients who are either legally required to attend treatment services or are otherwise coerced or pressured into those services. Practitioners in settings from prisons to emergency rooms to nursing homes to child protection agencies will find themselves with involuntary clients. In an update to this classic text, social workers Ronald H. Rooney and Rebecca G. Mirick explore the best ways to work with unwilling clients. While work with involuntary clients is common, it can be challenging, frustrating, and unproductive unless practitioners are well trained for it. This book provides a theoretical framework for understanding the legal, ethical, and practical concerns when working with involuntary clients, offering theory, treatment models, and specific practice strategies influenced by the best available knowledge. Animated by case studies across diverse settings, these resources can be used by practitioners to facilitate collaborative, effective working relationships with involuntary clients.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to create support groups for Latino parents who have open cases with Child Protective Services. The goal ofthis project is to improve Latino parents' rates of reunification with their children, increase successful case terminations, and decrease the recidivism or re-entry rates to the child welfare system. The proposed program will provide services in Spanish and will include psychoeducational and therapeutic topics discussing U.S. child abuse laws, the child welfare process, parents' and children's rights, and acculturation, as recommended in the literature. The Weingart Foundation was selected as the funder because the target population for their funding is required to be an underserved population; and Latino parents and children have been described as underserved populations in the literature. The actual funding and/or submission ofthis grant were not requirements for the successful completion of this academic report.
