Book excerpt: THE CONTEXT OF PARALLEL PROCESSING The field of digital computer architecture has grown explosively in the past two decades. Through a steady stream of experimental research, tool-building efforts, and theoretical studies, the design of an instruction-set architecture, once considered an art, has been transformed into one of the most quantitative branches of computer technology. At the same time, better understanding of various forms of concurrency, from standard pipelining to massive parallelism, and invention of architectural structures to support a reasonably efficient and user-friendly programming model for such systems, has allowed hardware performance to continue its exponential growth. This trend is expected to continue in the near future. This explosive growth, linked with the expectation that performance will continue its exponential rise with each new generation of hardware and that (in stark contrast to software) computer hardware will function correctly as soon as it comes off the assembly line, has its down side. It has led to unprecedented hardware complexity and almost intolerable dev- opment costs. The challenge facing current and future computer designers is to institute simplicity where we now have complexity; to use fundamental theories being developed in this area to gain performance and ease-of-use benefits from simpler circuits; to understand the interplay between technological capabilities and limitations, on the one hand, and design decisions based on user and application requirements on the other.

Book excerpt: Mechatronics, a synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic and computing engineering technologies, is a truly multidisciplinary approach to engineering. New products based on mechatronic principles are demonstrating reduced mechanical complexity, increased performance and often previously impossible capabilities. This book contains the papers presented at the UK Mechatronics Forum's 6th International Conference, held in Skövde, Sweden, in September 1998. Many of these high-quality papers illustrate the tremendous influence of mechatronics on such areas as manufacturing machinery, automotive engineering, textiles manufacture, robotics, and real-time control and vision systems. There are also papers describing developments in sensors, actuators, control and data processing techniques, such as fuzzy logic and neural networks, all of which have practical application to mechatronic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unifying theoretical framework for iterative solvers for linear systems. The focus is on parameter-free methods, i. e. methods that can be applied without a priori knowledge of inner properties of the systems. Despite the generality of the approach convergence estimates and geometrical properties can be derived. State-of-the-art solvers are surveyed and classified. Many new relations between these methods are furnished leading to a deeper insight. Existing gaps in the theory are pointed out and some visions for the design of more efficient and robust solvers are given. A valuation of established methods based on the theoretical results and on numerical tests is given. Recipes for the application of particular techniques are derived. The criteria are efficiency, robustness and the possibility of parallelization. This book has a triple aim: to simplify the analysis by a unified theory, to survey and valuate state-of-the-art solvers and to give an introduction to iterative solvers for non-experts in the field.

The originally intended Belgian-French meeting developed into a truely international conference, including specialists from Argentina, Germany, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, and the USA. The authors was to discuss a variety of important questions in applied sciences, engineering and mathematical physics which lead to deep structures and new challenges to the analysis of partial differential equations. The articles show the complexity of phenomena for a broader readership in non-linear analysis, free boundary value problems, effects from singularities, asymptotics, and stability of solutions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the contributions of the International Dortmund Meeting on Approximation Theory (IDoMAT 95) at Haus Bommerholz the conference center of Dortmund University during the week of March 13-17, 1995. At this international conference researchers and specialists from China, England, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Romania, U.S.A. and Germany described new developments in the fields of approximation theory. The authors discuss a variety of important ideas, questions and applicable methods in applied sciences and in several fields of approximation theory which lead to new challenges to the approximation by means of linear operators and shape preserving approximation, methods for the study of differential (diffusion) equations, approximation results of solutions of specific hyperbolic differential equations, polynomial and spline interpolation, density problems in multivariate approximation, orthogonal polynomials and wavelets. This volume collects the complete papers of the invited lectures together with a selection of papers relating to the research talks presented at IDoMAT 95.
