Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of laser cut is of the utmost importance in laser cutting process. All cutting parameters might have significant influence on the resulting quality of work. In general, cutting parameters are adjusted and tuned to provide the quality of cut desired. But this consumes exhaustive amounts of time and effort. Therefore, it is important to investigate the impact of cutting parameters on quality of cut. The aim of this study is to relate the CO2 laser cutting parameters namely laser power, cutting speed and tip distance to the quality of cut of PMMA sheet. The quality parameters considered include surface roughness, kerf width and heat affected zone. The effects of each cutting parameters on quality of cut was establish and the interactions between the cutting parameters were investigated.Design of experiment was used by implementing Box-Behnken design to identify the main effects and interactions of the parameters. Perthometer S2 and microscope MarVision MM320 are carried out to examine the surface roughness, kerf width and heat affected zone. The yields of responses are then analyzed by using STATISTICA software. The statistical analysis reveals that the surface roughness and kerf width are significantly affected by tip distance followed by cutting speed. Laser powers do affect the surface roughness and kerf width but its effects are negligible when compared to cutting speed and tip distance. It is also found that all three cutting parameters have significant effects on the variation of heat affected zone. A significant interaction exists between cutting speed and tip distance as shown in statistical analysis.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 7.69, language: English, abstract: In today's production and manufacturing industries, the laser cutting method is the broadly used nonconventional, advanced, non-contact type machining process. It has various advantages in using to cut or engrave almost all kinds of materials. In this study the effect of laser engraving parameters on filter paper were quantified using a mathematical model. The main objective of this study was to assess the individual and interaction effect of the input parameters on the surface quality of engraved portion under the experimental conditions that were based on the experimental design. From the experiment it was found that the laser power has the significant effect on the surface roughness. The interaction effect of the speed and number of dots per inch created by nozzle of the laser engraving machine and the quadratic effect of speed also have a significant effect on the output surface quality. It is seen that the roughness increases with the increase in the laser power. Also, it was found that the combination of low laser power and mid engraving speed can results in the good surface quality. Similarly, combination of low speed and DPI results in the good surface quality. Accordingly, interaction effect of low power and high DPI results the better surface quality. The best optimal setting was at 8W of laser power, 205.895 mm/sec of engraving speed and 299.9 numbers of dots per inch, the roughness was found as 5.5693 μm with the percentage error of 0.53%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the effect of assist gases on the surface roughness for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser cutting process. The analysis of the surface roughness has been determined by Surfcom 130A surface roughness tester which it place in laboratory. The material used for this experiment is acrylic sheet with 2.5 mm thickness. In this process the cut quality is very important. The parameters in laser cutting are cutting speed, keft width, laser power, chemistry of gas, nozzle exit parameter, nozzle design, thickness of the specimen and surface quality. In oxygen assist laser cutting, the gas plays two roles, one is to generated additional thermal energy during penetration and second role is to supply the shear force to the gas boundary to eject the molten metal formed during the cutting process. However, for this study, two parameters are selected. There are type of assist gas and gas pressure. Finally, the result show that the no assist gas with the lower pressure bars at certain speed is better quality on surface roughness cutting.
