Book Synopsis Biochemistry of Exercise and Training by : Ron J. Maughan
Download or read book Biochemistry of Exercise and Training written by Ron J. Maughan and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports Science is a rapidly expanding area, with student numbers on University courses increasing faster than for many other academic subjects. While there are a large number of suitable texts on exercise physiology, there has of yet been no such text for the area of exercise biochemistry. Biochemistry is also an area that students taking these courses usually have the greatest difficulty in understanding. The Biochemistry of exercise and training provides a broadly based introduction to those aspects of biochemistry relevant to exercise science. For students of biochemistry, physiology, and sports science, the book will enable them to develop a solid understanding of the fundamentals of biochemistry. Throughout, the focus is on physiological chemistry, dealing with those biochemical processes that determine the metabolic response to exercise, and the way in which these responses are influenced by training. The authors have taken account of the rapid advances being made in the field of physiological chemistry, and by providing the reader with a broad understanding of the fundamental concepts, they should then be able to integrate these future developments with their existing knowledge of the area.
Book Synopsis Foundations and Applications of Medical Biochemistry in Clinical Practice by : John Neustadt Nd
Download or read book Foundations and Applications of Medical Biochemistry in Clinical Practice written by John Neustadt Nd and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of more than ten years of research by the authors, this book describes for the first time ever the scientific basis and clinical applications of medical biochemistry, a fundamental paradigm shift in medicine. This paradigm shift is so revolutionary that it has been called the Neustadt-Pieczenik Paradigm, which is the fusion and clinical applications of biochemistry, thermodynamics, physiology, fractal enzymology, nutritional medicine and laboratory testing to identify and correct the underlying causes of many diseases that are considered genetic in nature (eg, Phenylketonuria) and those that are not considered genetic (eg, mature onset asthma, depression, fatigue). In this new medicine, doctors must reject the failed, purely symptomatic treatments they learned in medical school and focus on learning and treating the underlying biochemical causes of disease. From the first documented clinical observations of biochemical individuality in the early 1900s to the development of sophisticated biochemical tests, the authors provide a detailed and stunning analysis of a new medical model to help millions and cure our ailing healthcare system. They uniquely contrast the conventional medical approach with the functional biochemical approach through extensive case studies on depression, arthritis, migraine headaches, seizures, rashes and more. This book is a must-read for physicians, medical students, nutritionists, and anyone looking to take charge of their health.

Book Synopsis Molecular Driving Forces by : Ken Dill
Download or read book Molecular Driving Forces written by Ken Dill and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Driving Forces, Second Edition E-book is an introductory statistical thermodynamics text that describes the principles and forces that drive chemical and biological processes. It demonstrates how the complex behaviors of molecules can result from a few simple physical processes, and how simple models provide surprisingly accurate insights into the workings of the molecular world. Widely adopted in its First Edition, Molecular Driving Forces is regarded by teachers and students as an accessible textbook that illuminates underlying principles and concepts. The Second Edition includes two brand new chapters: (1) "Microscopic Dynamics" introduces single molecule experiments; and (2) "Molecular Machines" considers how nanoscale machines and engines work. "The Logic of Thermodynamics" has been expanded to its own chapter and now covers heat, work, processes, pathways, and cycles. New practical applications, examples, and end-of-chapter questions are integrated throughout the revised and updated text, exploring topics in biology, environmental and energy science, and nanotechnology. Written in a clear and reader-friendly style, the book provides an excellent introduction to the subject for novices while remaining a valuable resource for experts.
Book Synopsis Computational Materials, Chemistry, and Biochemistry: From Bold Initiatives to the Last Mile by : Sadasivan Shankar
Download or read book Computational Materials, Chemistry, and Biochemistry: From Bold Initiatives to the Last Mile written by Sadasivan Shankar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 1344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad and nuanced overview of the achievements and legacy of Professor William (“Bill”) Goddard in the field of computational materials and molecular science. Leading researchers from around the globe discuss Goddard’s work and its lasting impacts, which can be seen in today’s cutting-edge chemistry, materials science, and biology techniques. Each section of the book closes with an outline of the prospects for future developments. In the course of a career spanning more than 50 years, Goddard’s seminal work has led to dramatic advances in a diverse range of science and engineering fields. Presenting scientific essays and reflections by students, postdoctoral associates, collaborators and colleagues, the book describes the contributions of one of the world’s greatest materials and molecular scientists in the context of theory, experimentation, and applications, and examines his legacy in each area, from conceptualization (the first mile) to developments and extensions aimed at applications, and lastly to de novo design (the last mile). Goddard’s passion for science, his insights, and his ability to actively engage with his collaborators in bold initiatives is a model for us all. As he enters his second half-century of scientific research and education, this book inspires future generations of students and researchers to employ and extend these powerful techniques and insights to tackle today’s critical problems in biology, chemistry, and materials. Examples highlighted in the book include new materials for photocatalysts to convert water and CO2 into fuels, novel catalysts for the highly selective and active catalysis of alkanes to valuable organics, simulating the chemistry in film growth to develop two-dimensional functional films, and predicting ligand–protein binding and activation to enable the design of targeted drugs with minimal side effects.

Book Synopsis Biochemistry for Anesthesiologists and Intensivists by : Fernando Alemanno
Download or read book Biochemistry for Anesthesiologists and Intensivists written by Fernando Alemanno and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses and explains the importance of biochemistry knowledge in understanding what happens to patients during anesthesia and/or to those being in intensive care. It covers a wide range of topics, such as Cerebral Edema, Shock, Blood-Brain Barrier, The Pulmonary surfactant, The Acid – Base equilibrium, Local anaesthetics, Perineural adjuvants, Normobaric Oxygen Therapy, Theories of Narcosis. Hyperventilation effects and consequences are also presented. For instance, by hyperventilating a patient with a PaCO2 significantly below 25 mmHg, we risk blocking pyruvic acid carboxylation and transforming it into oxalacetic acid, which in turn knocks out the Krebs cycle, possibly leading to a complication, i.e. to metabolic acidosis and not to compensation for respiratory alkalosis. It is also worth remembering that vitamins are actually molecules of pretty considerable potency and should not be simply intended as integrators. If we inject a patient under intensive care with vitamin C, this not only plays a capillary-protective role but facilitates the conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline. As far as vitamin B6 goes, not only is it the most natural of antiemetics but the coenzyme responsible for transforming glutamate as one of the most powerful excitatory mediators into GABA, one of the fiercest inhibitors. Anesthesiological and intensive care practice require a detailed biochemistry knowledge to avoid onset of complications and/or to deal with unexpected events promptly and appropriately. The book is intended for anesthesiologists, intensivists, anesthesia teachers, anesthesia trainees and residents.
