Book excerpt: The essence of plants bursts forth in magnificent hues and surprising palettes. Using dyes of the leaves, roots, and flowers to color your cloth and yarn can be an amazing journey into botanical alchemy. In Eco Colour, artistic dyer and colorist India Flint teaches you how to cull and use this gentle and ecologically sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes. India explores the fascinating and infinitely variable world of plant color using a wide variety of techniques and recipes. From whole-dyed cloth and applied color to prints and layered dye techniques, India describes only ecologically sustainable plant-dye methods. She uses renewable resources and shows how to do the least possible harm to the dyer, the end user of the object, and the environment. Recipes include a number of entirely new processes developed by India, as well as guidelines for plant collection, directions for the distillation of nontoxic mordants, and methodologies for applying plant dyes. Eco Colour inspires both the home dyer and textile professional seeking to extend their skills using India's successful methods.

Book Synopsis Blueprint to cyanotypes – Exploring a historical alternative photographic process by : Malin Fabbri
Download or read book Blueprint to cyanotypes – Exploring a historical alternative photographic process written by Malin Fabbri and published by AlternativePhotography.com. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent beginners’ guide to cyanotypes – all you need to get started, and some goodies for more advanced cyanotypers too. About the book The cyanotype is often the first alternative process that people try. It is relatively easy and safe enough to nurture a child’s interest in photography. It can also be seen as a gateway to further exploration of historic photographic methods. In addition, it gives experienced photographers and artists a great excuse to take their eyes off the computer screen and get their hands dirty. Blueprint to cyanotypes is all you will need to get started with cyanotypes. It offers the beginner a step-by-step guide, from choosing material to making the final print. It is full of information and tips. Even the experienced cyanotypist may learn a thing or two. Blueprint to cyanotypes is published by AlternativePhotography.com – a website and information center dedicated to alternative photographic processes. From Malin Fabbri, the author: Why a book on cyanotypes? Of all the alternative processes the cyanotype is the one closest to my heart. I made my first cyanotype in 1999. I was intrigued by the blue images and wanted to test the cyanotype process to see what it had to offer. I bought chemicals and spent an evening coating paper and cloth. The results of the next day’s printing surprised me. Although the alchemy of the darkroom had always captivated me, developing a print in the sun was like a liberation. One of the things I found most refreshing about the process was the unpredictability of the results. Some of my best prints were the product of ‘happy accidents’. The developing process is straightforward. The chemicals are cheap, and most of the other items used can be found around the house. Pre-coated paper is available, but one of the benefits of working with cyanotypes is the great flexibility of material and paper available to you. Cyanotypes print on anything made of natural fibre. Cotton, linen, silk, handmade paper, watercolor paper and rags are just number of alternatives. Some artists even print on wood. So, if you want to explore a fun alternative photographic process or seriously want to experiment with producing unique fine art, make a cyanotype.

Book Synopsis Recycled Papers by : Claudia G. Thompson
Download or read book Recycled Papers written by Claudia G. Thompson and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper is the largest single component of municipal solid waste, and the recycling of paper must be part of any resolution to the current garbage crisis. Because there are no uniform standards for the generic term "recycled," it is still difficult for paper users to make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions. Myths, misinformation, and confusion abound. This first comprehensive guide to recycled printing and writing papers will therefore be an invaluable resource for anyone involved with printing, production, design, or issues of recycling in general. The book itself, printed on four different types of recycled paper, is a demonstration of the quality that informed designers and publishers can achieve. In concise, nontechnical language, Claudia Thompson explains the dimensions of the solid waste problem, the history of papermaking, the elements of recycled paper production (including current definitions and standards), the physical properties and printing characteristics of recycled papers, the potential impact of designers on recycling, and possibilities for the future. Recycled Papers: The Essential Guide was sponsored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts under the direction of Claudia Thompson, a graphic designer and Principal of Claudia Thompson Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ms. Thompson's work on environmental issues started with the first Earth Day in 1970, and she has been researching the subject of recycled papers since 1988.
Book Synopsis Adventures in Bookbinding by : Jeannine Stein
Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.
