Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Rogue to Everyman chronicles the colourful career of archetypal rogue Charles de Julie, foundling, army deserter, pimp, police officer, underground journalist, poet, and prisoner in the dreaded Bastille. Laurence Bongie reveals both the richly woven tapestry of Ancien Regime social history and a ground-level perspective of everyday material life in eighteenth-century Paris, a city of wit and learning where wealth and luxury were juxtaposed with the most squalid and degrading varieties of human poverty, disease, and crime. Julie knew intimately the sights, sounds, and smells of the French capital, its Opera and playhouses, law courts, narrow dirty streets, hackney coaches, great houses, low taverns, and splendid public gardens. only too well the activities of the capital's rakes, thieves, loan sharks, pickpockets, confidence men, blackmailers, crooked gamblers, and rowdy bullying soldiers, not to mention its twenty or thirty thousand prostitutes - all closely watched by as many as three thousand government spies and the eighteenth-century world's most invasive police network. Julie established close contacts with a number of the capital's leading maquerelles as well as their distinguished clients, and his underground news sheets, lifted mainly from secret vice squad reports, provided a restricted circle of wealthy subscribers with racy accounts of the town's sexual dalliances. His story ends in the dreaded Bastille. Extensive quotations from Julie's writings trace the moral itinerary of a clever, manipulating rogue, spirited liar, thief, poetaster, and libertine.

Book excerpt: The Story of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his Martial Law Regime. A New Perspective Ferdinand Marcos has been called names: demagogue, ruthless dictator, murderer, thief, among others and, truly so. He must have believed that the spirit of the 1898 Revolution from Spain with victory robbed by the United States being inconclusive, was real. His lust for power appeared to be a manifestation of a desire to set it aright. He believed that it was his destiny to correct it. The time to act came and he grabbed it. His mistake was that he never told anyone about it. Sadly, circumstances beyond his control intervened. At the outset, he was in complete control but in 1975 his health started to fail him. All the people who he depended upon to help, found reasons to desert him and get their own share before he finally lost it. The rest is history. This is by no means an effort to justify or seek forgiveness but to show a man who had an obsession to continue the patriotic fervor that his forbears had and took the leap. Thus he can be said to have been “A Patriot Gone Rogue.”
Download or read book Rogue Clerics written by Anson Shupe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years the mass media in the United States has been awash with reports of priestly pedophilia, ecclesiastical cover-up, and clerical intimidation or financial settlements intended to silence victims. Based on journalistic accounts, or scholarly research, it might be assumed that this is a recent phenomenon. Journalist reports began only within the past few years. Similarly, most sociologists of religion and particularly specialists in deviance and criminology did not reflect awareness of clerical misbehavior in their work. Despite this, Anson Shupe shows that clergy deviance, whether it is sexual or otherwise, is not merely a recent problem. It is as old as the church itself and is inevitably bound to recur due to the nature of religious groups. This comprehensive analysis offers the first up-to-date analysis of sexual, economic, and authoritative clergy malfeasance across faiths and denominational authority structures. Drawing on examples taken from antiquity up until the present day, and using reports by historians, theologians, church spokespersons, therapists, social scientists, and journalists, Shupe critically evaluates clergy deviant behavior, dividing it into various types. He also makes use of the therapeutic literature, addressing victimization at the level of the individual, church, and community at large. In this way, he compares the response of the clergy to victims' attempts to mobilize movements calling for church reform. Perhaps most controversial, this book considers the possible relationship of homosexuality in the clergy to the occurrences of scandals in all religious traditions across the board. As an overview of clergy misconduct, this book is singular. There is simply no other comprehensive serious examination of this subject. Written by a sociologist for a wide range of readers, its multi-disciplinary nature, vivid examples, and wealth of research, will make the volume of interest to sociologists of religion and crime, historians and theologians, as well as a general public.
Download or read book Rogue Target written by Mark Sennen and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British spy thriller pairing a secret service agent and a female mercenary tracking a terrorist responsible for an attack on an international flight. Speedbird 117, a Boeing 787 flight to New York, takes off like any other flight from Heathrow. Except this plane will never reach its destination. The cause? Taher, an utterly ruthless terrorist with a score to settle. With Great Britain’s Secret Service on red alert, senior analyst Stephen Holm is given an ultimatum: find Taher, confiscate his devastating surface-to-air missiles and bring him to justice, or witness his nation’s descent into disaster. Rebecca da Silva, meanwhile, accepts a seemingly routine job in the Philippines for a wealthy businessman. Little does she know that this will set a course in motion that she is unable to stop, a course that leads, inevitably, to Taher. With time running out, Holm and da Silva must work together: failure is not an option. An absolutely scintillating thriller from bestseller Mark Sennen, perfect for fans of James Deegan, Mark Greaney and James Swallow. “One of the best spy thrillers I've read in a long time . . . literally unputdownable.” —Nick Oldham, author of the Henry Christie thrillers “A brilliantly executed, addictive read, and one that hits the bullseye straight smack bang in the middle as to what to expect from a great modern-day spy thriller. I was hooked from the first page.” —A. A. Chaudhuri, author of The Scribe “A cracking thriller that had me turning the pages at full tilt.” —Jason Dean, author of the James Bishop thrillers
