Book excerpt: PBL in Engineering Education: International Perspectives on Curriculum Change presents diverse views on the implementation of PBL from across the globe. The purpose is to exemplify curriculum changes in engineering education. Drivers for change, implementation descriptions, challenges and future perspectives are addressed. Cases of PBL models are presented from Singapore, Malaysia, Tunisia, Portugal, Spain and the USA. These cases are stories of thriving success that can be an inspiration for those who aim to implement PBL and change their engineering education practices. In the examples presented, the change processes imply a transformation of vision and values of what learning should be, triggering a transition from traditional learning to PBL. In this sense, PBL is also a learning philosophy and different drivers, facing diverse challenges and involving different actors, trigger its implementation. This book gathers experiences, practices and models, through which is given a grasp of the complexity, multidimensional, systemic and dynamic nature of change processes. Anette Kolmos, director of Aalborg PBL Centre, leads off the book by presenting different strategies to curriculum change, addressing three main strategies of curriculum change, allowing the identification of three types of institutions depending on the type of strategy used. Following chapters describe each of the PBL cases based upon how they implement the seven components of PBL: (i) objectives and knowledge; (ii) types of problems, projects and lectures; (iii) progression, size and duration; (iv) students’ learning; (v) academic staff and facilitation; (vi) space and organization; and (vii) assessment and evolution. The book concludes with a chapter summarizing all chapters and providing an holistic perspective of change processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first textbook to clearly define the intersection of kinesiology and public health, Foundations of Physical Activity and Public Health, Second Edition With Web Resource, has been newly updated to reflect the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The new edition has been updated with additional contemporary research findings and international examples. With a solid introduction to the concepts of public health and kinesiology, techniques used to measure physical activity, and health effects of exercise and physical activity, the text will show readers how to advance the use of physical activity as a significant component in public health initiatives. Joining field leaders Harold (Bill) Kohl and Tinker Murray on this second edition is Deborah Salvo, an international expert with a special interest in the relationship between the built environment and health. Other updates to this edition include the following: New content on the use of electronic devices—such as pedometers and consumer-based wearable technology and apps—for measuring physical activity Urban design strategies for promoting physical activity at the community level An engaging, full-color visual presentation A new web resource that includes key term learning activities and links to the National Physical Activity Society (NPAS) core competencies for public health physical activity practitioners that relate to each chapter Foundations of Physical Activity and Public Health, Second Edition, describes the impact of sedentary behavior and physical activity on health, including cardiorespiratory and metabolic diseases, weight status, musculoskeletal disorders, cancers, and brain health. Evidence-based strategies are examined using three general approaches—informational, behavioral and social, and environmental and policy—with examples of successful programs to help readers understand applications in public health. A chapter on data collection and analysis teaches how to measure and evaluate program and policy effectiveness, while discussion of real-world initiatives such as the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan and the Toronto Charter for Physical Activity illustrates developing effective partnerships and models for advocacy. To further tie theory to practice, case studies and callout boxes throughout the text provide practical examples, and each chapter ends with a review to solidify student understanding of the material. Leader Profile sidebars allow students to explore career options while learning more about individuals who have had a major impact on this growing field. As the emphasis on physical activity as a tool for improving public health grows, professionals with combined knowledge and skills from both public health and exercise science fields will be highly sought. Foundations of Physical Activity and Public Health, Second Edition, will help students obtain an overview of kinesiology and public health areas, understand physical activity applications for public health, and learn about career options, and it will inspire them to choose a career and make a difference in the emerging field of physical activity and public health.

Book excerpt: Though in the past online learning was considered of poorer professional quality than classroom learning, it has become a useful and, in some cases, vital tool for promoting the inclusivity of education. Some of its benefits include allowing greater accessibility to educational resources previously unattainable by those in rural areas, and in current times, it has proven to be a critical asset as universities shut down due to natural disasters and pandemics. Examining the current state of distance learning and determining online assessment tools and processes that can enhance the online learning experience are clearly crucial for the advancement of modern education. The Handbook of Research on Determining the Reliability of Online Assessment and Distance Learning is a collection of pioneering investigations on the methods and applications of digital technologies in the realm of education. It provides a clear and extensive analysis of issues regarding online learning while also offering frameworks to solve these addressed problems. Moreover, the book reviews and evaluates the present and intended future of distance learning, focusing on the societal and employer perspective versus the academic proposals. While highlighting topics including hybrid teaching, blended learning, and telelearning, this book is ideally designed for teachers, academicians, researchers, educational administrators, and students.

This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the development of complex methods and means of their implementation with using UAVs aimed for improving the safety and efficiency of the energy system. The scientific problem of complex automated monitoring of the energy system objects with using UAVs has been solved, including the control of its elements in the visible and infrared range, the acoustic spectrum, as well as by the levels of the electric field strength. The scientific foundations of mathematical, physical and statistical modeling of electromagnetic and acoustic fields in the elements of electric power objects of complex spatial configurations have been created, taking into account the possibility of the appearance of such nonlinear processes as corona discharges and breakdowns at long air gaps. Improved methods are proposed for determining the exact location of accidents on power lines using UAVs on the basis of the developed mathematical models and the obtained analytical expressions. Conceptual foundations for the creation of methods and means for monitoring the state of insulation, lightning protection systems and the integrity of the structures of electric power facilities with using UAVs have been formed.
