Book excerpt: This book presents contributions of international and local experts from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS-Cameroon) and also from other local universities in the domain of orthogonal polynomials and applications. The topics addressed range from univariate to multivariate orthogonal polynomials, from multiple orthogonal polynomials and random matrices to orthogonal polynomials and Painlevé equations. The contributions are based on lectures given at the AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop on Introduction of Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications held on October 5–12, 2018 in Douala, Cameroon. This workshop, funded within the framework of the Volkswagen Foundation Initiative "Symposia and Summer Schools", was aimed globally at promoting capacity building in terms of research and training in orthogonal polynomials and applications, discussions and development of new ideas as well as development and enhancement of networking including south-south cooperation.

Book excerpt: The Segovia meeting set out to stimulate an intensive exchange of ideas between experts in the area of orthogonal polynomials and its applications, to present recent research results and to reinforce the scientific and human relations among the increasingly international community working in orthogonal polynomials. This volume contains original research papers as well as survey papers about fundamental questions in the field (Nevai, Rakhmanov & López) and its relationship with other fields such as group theory (Koornwinder), Padé approximation (Brezinski), differential equations (Krall, Littlejohn) and numerical methods (Rivlin).
Book Synopsis Linear Algebra, Rational Approximation and Orthogonal Polynomials by : A. Bultheel
Download or read book Linear Algebra, Rational Approximation and Orthogonal Polynomials written by A. Bultheel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-11-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving from an elementary discussion, this book develops the Euclidean algorithm to a very powerful tool to deal with general continued fractions, non-normal Padé tables, look-ahead algorithms for Hankel and Toeplitz matrices, and for Krylov subspace methods. It introduces the basics of fast algorithms for structured problems and shows how they deal with singular situations. Links are made with more applied subjects such as linear system theory and signal processing, and with more advanced topics and recent results such as general bi-orthogonal polynomials, minimal Padé approximation, polynomial root location problems in the complex plane, very general rational interpolation problems, and the lifting scheme for wavelet transform computation. The text serves as a supplement to existing books on structured linear algebra problems, rational approximation and orthogonal polynomials. Features of this book: • provides a unifying approach to linear algebra, rational approximation and orthogonal polynomials • requires an elementary knowledge of calculus and linear algebra yet introduces advanced topics. The book will be of interest to applied mathematicians and engineers and to students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Computational Aspects of Linear Control by : Claude Brezinski
Download or read book Computational Aspects of Linear Control written by Claude Brezinski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-06-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this volume is to create a bridge between control theory and its numerical analysis aspects. It is unique because it presents both subjects in a single volume. The book combines an exposition of linear control theory and the corresponding modern relevant computational techniques such as orthogonal polynomials, Padé approximation, numerical linear algebra, and some topics on nonlinear differential equations. It can be considered as an introduction to control theory for numerical analysts looking for a wide area of applications and as an introduction to recent numerical methods for control specialists. Audience: Aimed at advanced students at a doctoral or post-doctoral level, engineers, and researchers in control theory and numerical analysis.

Book Synopsis Computational Aspects of Linear Control by : Claude Brezinski
Download or read book Computational Aspects of Linear Control written by Claude Brezinski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many devices (we say dynamical systems or simply systems) behave like black boxes: they receive an input, this input is transformed following some laws (usually a differential equation) and an output is observed. The problem is to regulate the input in order to control the output, that is for obtaining a desired output. Such a mechanism, where the input is modified according to the output measured, is called feedback. The study and design of such automatic processes is called control theory. As we will see, the term system embraces any device and control theory has a wide variety of applications in the real world. Control theory is an interdisci plinary domain at the junction of differential and difference equations, system theory and statistics. Moreover, the solution of a control problem involves many topics of numerical analysis and leads to many interesting computational problems: linear algebra (QR, SVD, projections, Schur complement, structured matrices, localization of eigenvalues, computation of the rank, Jordan normal form, Sylvester and other equations, systems of linear equations, regulariza tion, etc), root localization for polynomials, inversion of the Laplace transform, computation of the matrix exponential, approximation theory (orthogonal poly nomials, Pad6 approximation, continued fractions and linear fractional transfor mations), optimization, least squares, dynamic programming, etc. So, control theory is also a. good excuse for presenting various (sometimes unrelated) issues of numerical analysis and the procedures for their solution. This book is not a book on control.
