Fourteen leading international scholars provide accessible and authoritative chapters on all relevant topics: from Shakespeare's seminal role in the development of English poetry, the wide-ranging practice of his poetic form, and his enigmatic place in print and manuscript culture, to his immersion in English Renaissance politics, religion, classicism, and gender dynamics. With individual chapters on Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, The Passionate Pilgrim, 'The Phoenix and the Turtle', the Sonnets, and A Lover's Complaint, the Companion also includes chapters on the presence of poetry in the dramatic works, on the relation between poetry and performance, and on the reception and influence of the poems. The volume includes a chronology of Shakespeare's life, a note on reference works, and a reading list for each chapter.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,4 (B), University of Trier (Faculty II), course: Introduction in English Literature, language: English, abstract: William Shakespeare is said to have written his mature comedy Much Ado About Nothing around 1600.The “nominal main plot”1 of the play is about the love affair between Hero and Claudio. Nevertheless, the developing Benedick- Beatrice-liaison, which was rather supposed to be a funny subplot, has a greater effect on the spectators. The scene in Leonato ́s orchard is important and can be characterized as the decisive point in this context because in the garden, the foundation stone of the love relationship is laid. Therefore, lots of articles and books have been written on this particular scene. In this term paper, I want to find out why the events in the orchard are so fascinating and gripping. 1. Structure of the scene After having instructed a servant to bring him a book, Benedick speaks aloud his thoughts on love. He soliloquises that Claudio has changed his behaviour because he is in love. Benedick is not capable of understanding how a woman can alter the personality of a man in this extent. He swears to himself that love “shall never make (him) such a fool”2. In this monologue, Benedick also presents a list of the qualities which he expects of a perfect woman. These demands seem to be an unreachable aim for he is really hard to please. Benedick puts up high standards as a result of his very distinct self-confidence and pride. His soliloquy is interrupted when Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio come into the orchard. Benedick wants to avoid the meeting with them by hiding “in the arbour”3. [...] 1 J.R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much Ado About Nothing presents a world of glittering surfaces and exquisite social performances. The language of the play sparkles with a fireworks of wit and dazzling bouts of repartee, most memorably in the "merry war" of words between the reluctant lovers, Benedick and Beatrice. A closer look at the language of the play, however, reveals it to be laced with violence and charged with the desire to humiliate others. Wit is deployed as a weapon to ridicule one's opponent; much of the humour circulates incessantly around the theme of cuckoldry, a major source of male anxiety in the period. The most drastic use of language is to slander Hero by accusing her of a lack of chastity - an accusation that spelt social death for a woman in the early modern age. The death that Hero feigns mirrors accurately the devastating effects of the assassination of her character by the smart set of young noblemen in the play. This study guide focuses on examining the array of the uses of language that the play displays, and probes into the ideas about language that it explores. The book looks at key film versions of the play by Kenneth Branagh and Joss Whedon which are often used on courses, whilst also offering practical questions and tips to help students develop their own critical writing skills and deepen their understanding of the play.

This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delineates how Thornton Wilder (1897–1975), a learned playwright and novelist, embeds himself within the classical tradition, integrating Greek and Roman motifs with a wide range of sources to produce heart-breaking masterpieces such as Our Town and comedy sensations such as Dolly Levi. Through this study of archival sources and close reading, readers will understand Wilder’s avant-garde staging and innovative time sequences not as a break with the past, but as a response to the classics. The author traces the genesis of unforgettable characters like Dolly Levi in The Matchmaker, Emily Webb in Our Town, and George Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth. Vergil’s expression, "Here are the tears of the world, and human matters touch the heart" haunts Wilder’s oeuvre. Understanding Vergil’s phrase as "tears for the beauty of the world," Wilder utilizes scenes depicting the beauty of the world and the sorrow when individuals recognize this too late. Wilder exhorts us to observe lovingly, alert to the wonder of the everyday. This work will appeal to actors and directors, professors and students in classics and in American literature, those fascinated by modern drama and performance studies, and non-specialists, theatre-goers, and readers in the general public.
