Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over Mohawk Trail Brings to one a thrill of delightful anticipation. A picture comes to us of the red man noiselessly passing through the beauties of secluded nature. The early history of Northfield abounds with stories, traditional and authentic, of the Indians who dwelt in several bands in this part of the valley of the Connecticut. Lying along this fertile valley, protected east and west by the Franklin Hills, the Indians found all things necessary for their primitive life. These same hills later became their watchtowers where they observed the movements of the settlers and planned their disastrous attacks. Northfield owes a large part of its prosperity to the fact that it is the birthplace of and the home of Dwight L.Moody, the world-famous evangelist. Here he built up Northfield Seminary for girls, a preparatory school of high rank. Much of East Xorthfield is a memorial to his life and work. He established the Northfield Summer Conferences, which are attended by thousands of people each year from all parts of the world, who seek here religious instruction and inspiration. We start our trip at East Northfield 44 Miles from the Trail Summit Northfield was called Squakheag by the Indians, as this was the name of the tribe which lived in this region. They were a branch of the Pacomptock Indians of the Deerfield Valley and warred with the Mohawks bevond the Hoosac Mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mohawk Trail: Its History and Course With Map and Illustrations The building of the new State Highway across Hoosae mountain was an event which turned a great volume of travel through a region which had been little appreciated, and seen by necessarily few tourists. With this great volume of travel over a splendid highway, bearing a name which implies a history of its own, there was awakened a desire to learn what that history is. Many travelers have asked what justification there is for supposing that there ever was an Indian trail across the mountain, and many more who knew that a trail did exist, were eager to know at what places they traversed the ancient path. In an endeavor to satisfy these inquirers, this story of the Trail has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Mohawk Trail, or Boy Scouts on Lake Champlain And here was Gordon Lord, scout of the second class, who had stopped to do a good turn and as a direct consequence had failed to be prepared. He could not do the good turn and be prepared both; which should he have done? The scout smile broadened as he pondered over this. Here would be a poser for Red Deer. He loved to ask Red Deer such questions as this; it was as good as a circus to hear the two of them engaged in a learned discus sion on the technicalities of Scout Law. And Red Deer (who was scout-master of the Oakwood troop) enjoyed it immensely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was not his regular camp or headquarters, as that was on the other side of the Susquehanna, but the post hich he had established for convenience while prosecuting the search for Rosa Minturn. In this search the colonel did not engage personally, as all whom he brought with him were able to do that kind of work much better than he; but his interests were so concerned and woven into the results of this expedition that he could not wait upon the other side of the river until the news of suc cess or failure should be brought to him. He had therefore crossed with his squad, his force in the vicinity Of Wilkesbarre consisting Of about twenty men, nearly all of whom were of the Iroquois people, including the best warriors and trailers Of the tribe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Glen: Or, the Mohawk's Friendship The story here presented not only grasps those terrible vicissitudes in which the frontier life of our forefathers was so prolific, but at the same time conveys many useful lessons and incentives to manly effort, and much curious information in relation to a period in the history of Pennsylvania, when her soil was occupied by a population comprising mam* different races and religious sects, having little in common, and held together by the fearful pressure of an Indian war. Here we behold the strange spectacle of the Quaker tilling his land, and pursuing his ordinary duties, while his more belligerent neighbor sleeps with the rifle with-in reach of his hand sits in the house of God with the weapon between his knees, goes armed in the funeral procession, which is often attacked, the mourners killed, scalped, and flung into the grave of the corpse they were about to inter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Crow Wing Trail Another reason may be found in the fact that over it I made my first prairie journey, that from one of its encamp ments 1 saw the last herd of buffalo ever seen east of the Red River, and that though I am about to describe it as seen by me in a peaceful journey late in the fall of 1860, I was to traverse it again when comparatively disused during the year of the Sioux massacre in Minnesota, as the only hope of reaching Fort Garry from St. Paul, where I then was, when a camp fire was out of the question, each river-ford and bluffof timber to be avoided, and a stealthy Indian tread to he fancied in the rustle of every leaf.
