Book excerpt: Parents who follow the concepts explained in From Diapers to Diplomas - A Common Sense Approach to Raising Well-adjusted Children, will not need Dr. Phil. While the author, an award-winning teacher at one of the most successful public schools in the nation, acknowledges that the children of today have more problems than previous generations, human nature has not changed. From this perspective, the children of the 21st century are no different than the children of the past. What has changed is the growing number of parents who have drifted away from the proactive and common-sense philosophy of raising children. This has led to more and more kids growing up with a lack of values, discipline, and direction. To confront the challenge of guiding children in the right direction, From Diapers to Diplomas provides readers with universal concepts: the purpose of discipline is not to punish, rather to correct parents must make their expectations clear and ensure that their children live up to them children must be held accountable for their actions kids need to develop a sense of ownership toward their education so they become self-motivated instead of parent-motivated pick the right battles - part of wisdom lies in knowing what to overlook

Book Synopsis The Battle of the Bridges by : Frank van Lunteren
Download or read book The Battle of the Bridges written by Frank van Lunteren and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “On these pages, the human story comes to life, sometimes tragic, sometimes amusing, but always poignant and compelling” (John C. McManus, author of Fire and Fortitude). Operation Market Garden has been recorded as a complete Allied failure in World War II, an overreach that resulted in an entire airborne division being destroyed at its apex. However, within that operation were episodes of heroism that still remain unsung. On September, 17, 1944, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, floated down across the Dutch countryside, in the midst of German forces, and proceeded to fight their way to vital bridges to enable the Allied offensive to go forward. The 101st Airborne was behind them; the British 1st Airborne was far advanced. In the 82nd’s sector, the crucial conduits needed to be seized. The Germans were as aware of the importance of the bridge over the Waal River at Nijmegen as James Gavin and his 82nd troopers were. Thus began a desperate fight for the Americans to seize it, no matter what the cost. The Germans would not give up, however, and fought tenaciously in the town and fortified the bridge. On September 20, Gavin turned his paratroopers into sailors and conducted a deadly daylight amphibious assault in small plywood and canvas craft across the Waal River to secure the north end of the highway bridge in Nijmegen. German machine guns and mortars boiled the water on the crossing, but somehow, a number of paratroopers made it to the far bank. Their ferocity rolled up the German defenses, and by the end of the day, the bridge had fallen. This book by Dutch historian Frank van Lunteren draws on a plethora of previously unpublished sources to shed new light on the exploits of the “Devils in Baggy Pants.” A native of Arnhem—the site of the “Bridge Too Far”—the author draws on nearly 130 interviews he personally conducted with veterans of the 504th, plus Dutch civilians and British and German soldiers, who here tell their story for the first time.

Book Synopsis Representations of War in Ancient Rome by : Sheila Dillon
Download or read book Representations of War in Ancient Rome written by Sheila Dillon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War suffused Roman life to a degree unparalleled in other ancient societies. Through a combination of obsessive discipline and frenzied (though carefully orchestrated) brutality, Rome's armies conquered most of the lands stretching from Scotland to Syria, and the Black Sea to Gibraltar. The place of war in Roman culture has been studied in historical terms, but this is the first book to examine the ways in which Romans represented war, in both visual imagery and in literary accounts. Audience reception and the reconstruction of display contexts are recurrent themes here, as is the language of images: a language that is sometimes explicit and at other times allusive in its representation of war. The chapters encompass a wide variety of art media (architecture, painting, sculpture, building, relief, coin), and they focus on the towering period of Roman power and international influence: the 3rd century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D.
Book Synopsis When War Dawns by : David Lee Corley
Download or read book When War Dawns written by David Lee Corley and published by White Mountain Commercial LLC. This book was released on 2023-03-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far will America go to win the Vietnam War? Torn by terrible loss, an American pilot finds distraction when he develops a new weapon that could change the war in Vietnam. As it appears in the night sky, the terrified Viet Cong call it “dragon.” Will it be enough or is it already too late? After enemy torpedo boats attack the US Destroyer Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin, President Johnson decides to expand the war and bomb North Vietnam. When a second attack occurs, the US Congress gives the president the power to declare all-out war against the communists. But are the attacks real or just smoke and mirrors? Under the direction of the CIA, the secret war in Laos gains momentum as Montagnard tribesmen and SOG teams fight to cut off the Ho Chi Minh Trail and deny the Viet Cong and NVA the weapons and supplies they need to win the war in South Vietnam. Using an odd mix of older warplanes and modern jet fighters, Operation Barrel Roll brings American airpower to the struggle in the Laotian mountains. As the Laotian military loses control over The Plain of Jars to the Pathet Lao, the CIA turns a blind eye when an American pilot is coerced into transporting opium grown by the hill tribes as their only source of income. Run by the Corsican mob in Saigon, it’s a treacherous tangle of deceit that will cost thousands of American lives. Like all the books in the airmen series, When War Dawns is based on historical events and real people. It’s full of military action and suspense. War has arrived and it seems like nothing can stop it.
