Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Vertebrate Paleontology for Students of Zoology The brief sketch of our present knowledge of extinct vertebrated animals attempted in this volume, is intended for students of Vertebrate Morphology and Zoology who are desirous of examining in detail the palaeontological aspect of their subject The advanced student has long appreciated the necessity for a more extended acquaintance with the facts of Embryology on completing his elementary course: he now begins to perceive that to understand the varied problems aright, he must also enter somewhat minutely into the past history of life on the globe as revealed by Palaeontology. The latter task in most cases proves more difficult than the former, since the trained powers of observation needed for interpreting the remains of organisms embedded in rock are somewhat different from those acquired in the study of fresh tissues and organs. Moreover, much of the essential literature of the subject is contained in unfamiliar works and serials dealing chiefly with rocks and minerals. An elementary handbook, presenting only the broad outlines of this branch of biological enquiry, will thus perhaps be found useful as an introduction to more elaborate treatises and original memoirs, which are difficult to understand without some preliminary idea of general principles. It is hoped that the plan adopted in the following pages will facilitate the comprehension of these general principles. The more important facts and generalizations are. printed in large type; while the more technical and descriptive matter, which ought to be studied with specimens in a museum, is intercalated in paragraphs of small type. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the evolution of vertebrates is fascinating. Recently, there has been an explosion of new research topics in the field - the closest fossil relatives of the vertebrates, dramatic new fish specimens unlike anything now living, the adaptations required for the move on to land, the relationships of the early amphibians and reptiles, the origins and biology of the dinosaurs, the role of mass extinction in vertebrate evolution, new Mesozoic birds, the earliest mammals, ecology and mammalian diversification, and the origins and evolution of human beings. This book presents a complete outline of the history of vertebrates, based on the latest studies by palaeontologists around the world. New material comes from North and South America, Australia, Europe, China, Africa and Russia. A key aim of the book is to show how vertebrate palaeontologists obtain their information. There is an illustrated account of how to dig up a dinosaur and how to interpret the bones. In addition, detailed case studies explain: how palaeontologists study taphonomy, exceptional preservation, the form and function of bizarre animals, and the reconstruction of phylogeny from cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data. The new edition is extensively revised, and there is a great deal of new material based on work in the 1990s. There is a new chapter on how to study fossil vertebrates. Another major change is that more emphasis has been given to cladograms. They are set apart from the body of the text, and full lists of diagnostic characters are now given. The book is designed for palaeontology courses in biology and geology departments. It is also aimed at the enthusiast who wants to experience how leading palaeontologists design their research programs and carry out multidisciplinary studies of ancient vertebrates. The book has a strong phylogenetic focus, and this makes it an up-to-date source of the latest broad-scale systematic data on vertebrate evolution. The second edition of a very popular and proven text. Detailed case studies are presented, which show how palaeontologists actually work. Includes an illustrated account of how to dig up a dinosaur, and how to interpret the bones.

Book excerpt: The first vertebrate animals appear in the fossil record over 520 million years ago. These lineages diversified and eventually crept ashore leading to further evolutionary divergence and the appearance of the familiar charismatic vertebrates of today. From the tiniest fishes, diminutive salamanders, and miniaturized lizards to gargantuan dinosaurs, enormous brontotheres, and immense whales, vertebrates have captured the imagination of the lay public as well as the most erudite academics. They are the among the best studied organisms. This book employs beautifully rendered illustrations of these diverse lineages along with informative text to document a rich evolutionary history. The prolific and best-selling author reveals much of the latest findings regarding the phylogenetic history of vertebrates without overwhelming the reader with pedantry and excessive jargon. Simultaneously, comprehensive and authoritative while being approachable and lucid, this book should appeal to both the scholar, the student, and the fossil enthusiast. Key Features Provides an up-to-date account of evolution of vertebrates Includes numerous beautiful color reconstructions of prehistoric vertebrates Describes extinct vertebrates and their evolutionary history Discusses and illustrates the first vertebrates, as well as familiar lineages of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals Reviews mass extinctions and other important events in the diversification of vertebrates Related Titles Bard, J. In addition to outlining anatomical diversity, it provides fundamental phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts for interpretation. An international team of leading authorities review the impact of ontogeny, mechanics, and environment in relation to bone and dental tissues. Synthesizing current advances in the biological problems of growth, metabolism, evolution, ecology, and behavior, this comprehensive and authoritative volume is built upon a foundation of concepts and technology generated over the past fifty years.
