Excerpt: ... pastors and churches generally labored to the same end. At the close of the seventeenth century thirty or more Indian Congregational churches had been formed, each with its own native pastor. But partly through the bad faith of individuals, and partly through the inability of the two races to understand one another's ideas and traditions, conflicts arose, culminating in that long series of Indian wars which not only interrupted missionary work, but greatly affected the whole religious life of the colonists. The effects of the Half-way Covenant were referred to in the previous chapter, but need further notice in this connection. Instead of encouraging the half-way members to qualify themselves for full membership in the churches, the covenant tended either to render them content with the partial privileges thus secured, or to lead them to demand under it the privileges of full membership, including the right to partake of the Lord's supper. To these demands many churches acceded, some by informal practice, others by deliberate vote. In consequence, the number of persons "owning the covenant" was greatly increased, so as sometimes to include almost the entire community, and to obliterate the distinction between regenerate and unregenerate character. An ecclesiastical degeneracy followed the decay of personal piety. Congregationalism, being based upon a regenerate membership, must, as Increase Mather declared, "stand or fall as godliness in the power of it does prevail or otherwise." In this case it was too often "otherwise," and the most lamentable results followed. Churches were rent by grievous dissensions within themselves; they failed to exercise Christian fellowship one with another; councils assumed...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of the Congregational Church and Society, of North Branford: Delivered in the Congregational Church, Jan, 6, 1850 IT is among the first duties of every religious community which is fortunate enough to have a Past, to know its own history. Some of God's richest mercies to a given generation will be found to have had their earthly germ in times long past; and the} generation consequently which is not familiar with the experience of its predecessors, can have at the best but a very limited and imperfect view of the extent of God's goodness to itself. Each generation as it appears on the earth in its turn, (and especially here in New England, ) resem bles in an important respect the trees which beautify its surface; its roots - the source of its beauty and glory and life - lie buried in the soil. Whatever there may be in the character of this community which is. Worthy to be perpetu ated among the generations to come, came, under God, mainly, as I believe, from the fathers who lie buried in these adjacent grounds. I propose then to trace the history of this church and society, so far as the materials for such a history are still accessible - from its earliest days. The religious history of the early inhabitants of North Branford, until the year 1701, is nearly identical with that of the Congregational church of Branford, with which they were originally connected. We claim, therefore, a common property, and feel a common interest in all that pertains to the early history of that church. The outlines of that his tory, in a few words, may properly precede such matters as relate exclusively to ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plan of Union: Or a History of the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of the Western Reserve; With Biographical Sketches of the Early Missionaries The present can only be understood through a knowledge of the past; and only by understanding both past and present can we rightly conduct the future. Where valuable institutions have been laboriously erected, and afterward have fallen into disrepute, and been misunderstood and reprobated, and their origin aspersed, there is no better way to learn the truth, and do justice to them, than to study well their origin and growth. To furnish facilities for such a study of the churches and ecclesiasticism of the Reserve, as well as to perpetuate the memory of good men, and of events connected with the formation of our social and religious life, is the object of this little book. The materials here wrought into narrative have been collected from sources too varied to admit of detailed reference to authorities. With Sketches of the Sunday-School and the Choir: And Reminiscences Presented at the One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary of the Organization of the Church, April 20, 1893 At the annual meeting of the church, December 29, 1892, a committee, consisting of the pastor, Dea. E. J. Colburn, Wilbert P. Farley, Mrs. Charlotte M. Farley, and Mrs. Ellen H. Lovejoy, were appointed to take into consideration the matter of the public observance of the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the organization of the church and the settlement of the first minister in town. If in their judgment it was deemed advisable to celebrate the occasion, they were empowered to make all necessary arrangements therefor, including the appointment of committees. Deciding that it was best to observe the day, they appointed Cyrus F. Burge, Charles S. Spaulding, and Mrs. Sarah Farley a Historical Committee; Albert H. Richardson, a Committee on Entertainment, with authority to choose needed assistants, and Silas M. Spalding and Mrs. Louisa D. Spalding a Committee on an Old Time Exhibition. The necessary arrangements being completed, we came together April 20, 1893, at the town hall, at 10 1-2 a. m., where three hours were very pleasantly spent in social reunion, a dinner to which upwards of three hundred fifty sat down, and in viewing the collection of old-time relics. These consisted, in part, of a pew and a portion of the pulpit taken from the meeting-house before its change in 1849, a portion of the communion set in use before 1831, the original charter of the town, table articles in use by the first settler and by the first minister, a flax and a spinning wheel, a tin kitchen and a baker, a gun carried at the battle of Bunker Hill, ancient hooks and documents, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Congregational Churches of Vermont and Their Ministry, 1762 1914: Historical and Statistical The present writer, who succeeded Mr. Wild in the position of corresponding secretary of the state body, is deeply in debted to his predecessor for his courtesy in permitting the use of his manuscript, as well as of his valuable collection of material covering the more recent years. He has prepared this volume in the belief that a work of less ambitious scope and smaller compass would be welcomed by Congregationalists of his native state. Its historical outline professes to be but a brief summary. The statistics form the major part of the work. And have been prepared with much care, having always as their substantial basis the earlier work of Mr. White and especially the invaluable collection of Mr. Wild. Errors and omissions will be found, as the writer is painfully aware. Some of these could perhaps have been rectified by further investigation, but it has not seemed best to delay publi cation longer. It should be needless to say that this little volume does not profess to be a history of organized Christianity in Vermont, and makes no mention of the other denominations which have had a large and worthy part in the religious life of the people. Its only aim is to cover the outlines of the work of that denomina tion which was the first of Protestants in the field and has al ways maintained the first place in number of churches and of communicants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of the Independent Congregational Church: Meadville, Pennsylvania, 1825-1900 Delivered Tuesday evening, October 30, 1900. In the preparation of it I have tried to make so exhaustive use of all printed or manuscript sources discoverable that no one will need to work over the subject a second time. Much more material and many more details have thus been accumulated than could well be incorporated into the present narrative; but in order that this additional material, having once been unearthed from a great mass of newspapers and other sources, might not be lost again, I have deposited in the libraries of the Meadville Theological School, the Har vard Divinity School, and the American Uni tarian Association copies of this history with the addition of full manuscript notes, appen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jamaica Congregational Churches: A History and Memorial, 1901 The publication of this little book is part of a scheme of the Jamaica Congregational Union for the celebra tion of the opening of the Twentieth Century. Our Jamaica churches have always manifested an interest in their own history, and have held in affectionate memory those who have laboured in the Gospel amongst them. Many of these memories are, how ever, fading by the lapse of time, and from the fact that few remain with us whose connection with the mission covers the sixty-six years of its existence. Records are scanty, and traditions are becoming indistinct and doubtful. One of the objects in View in the preparation of this volume has been, therefore, to gather, sift, and make permanently accessible the main facts of the history of the mission, and of the several churches founded by it. The facts for the historical sketches of the churches have been supplied for the most part by the present pastors, but valuable aid has also been rendered by the Rev. T. H. Clark, London, who furnished a sketch of each station from records in his possession, by which information from other sources has been confirmed or supplemented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Centennial of York County Conference, Buxton, Maine, June 4 and 5, 1872: Papers There Read, and Sketches of the Congregational Churches in the County, With Notes Appended Down to the Present Time, June, 1876 While then, all the churches are, as we hold, substantially independent of each other, those of like faith and polity have certain duties and relations to one another, which gives rise to what we call the fellowship of the churches; and this fellowship is expressed and maintained by various customs, practices, and institutions which we mutually sustain. And first among these may be named our ecclesiastical councils, bodies composed of representatives of churches, called together for some specific purpose of advice, by some church which needs their advice, usually in settling or dis missing a minister, or in organizing a new church; but it may be for advice on other matters. They are composed of the churches invited, by their representatives, and of these only, and can consider only the subjects specified in the call, and in relation to these can only give advice. There is also the custom of receiving members into the churches, simply on dismission and recommendation from sister churches, and the practice of inviting members of other churches to join in communion around the Lord's table. To our councils we usually invite only churches of our own order; but these other methods we employ in our intercourse with other denominations of christians. These are all valuable methods of expressing our fellowship, but they together hardly come up to the full measure of that fellowship which the churches desire and need. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of Dunstable, Mass AS I did, in my answer to the call given me to settle as a gospel minister in this place, bring to your view the impropriety of making the stipulation between a people and their minister a matter of pecuniary speculation, and as you complied with it, I ever thought that we were bound on both sides never to do any such thing. I do, therefore, now most solemnly record my protest against it. But conceiving it to be the duty of a people and their minister to be always helpful to each other under all difficulties and embarrassments, to perform this duty, therefore, toward you, now laboring under apprehen sions of embarrassments, I propose to you that provided the said Act of the General Court above mentioned, shall not be repealed, but be put in execution to your damage, so that your ministerial taxes shall be increased thereby upon the valuation of your estates, and provided there shall be a majority of the town, who will attend the public worship of God with the Congregational Church of Christ, as heretofore done in the house now built for that purpose, under the regular administration thereof, which, by Divine Providence, shall be provided, I will relinquish so much of my salary for the present year, as the increase upon their ministerial taxes shall be. The year to begin the Ist of March, 1811, and end the Ist of March, 1812. That no encouragement be taken herefrom to the damage of the town, I reserve the consideration of any relinquishment in future years, to my own judgment of the circumstances which may then exist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire Nonconformity, or Sketches, Historical Descriptive, of the Congregational and Old Presbyterian Churches in the County: The Churches of the Blackburn District This volume forms the second part of "Lancashire Nonconformity," and covers what is known as "The Blackburn District" of the Lancashire Congregational Union. In no division of the county does Congregationalism appear more robust and present a worthier record. A century ago it was represented by about half a dozen churches, principally in thinly-populated and out-of-the-way places, some of them in a moribund condition, eventually to become quite extinct; but now there are over forty churches, besides mission stations, with an aggregate membership of several thousands. Congregationalism is rooting itself firmly in the great centres of population. There is, however, a question which needs to be considered by the churches of this district, if not more earnestly, not less, than by those of any other - viz., whether the claims of rural Lancashire are receiving adequate attention. It is almost a truism to say that some of the best types of Congregationalists in our town churches have been born and reared in country churches which fight hard for bare life, and it will be a real loss to us when this inflow shall cease. It is sincerely hoped that the perusal of this work will contribute somewhat to a revival of interest in those old historic churches which found their home in these quiet rural districts, and which constitute the foundation upon which the stately structure of present day Lancashire Congregationalism has been erected. It is necessary to repeat what has been so often said, in one way or another, that this work does not seek to supersede (even if that were possible) Doctor Hailey's "Lancashire Nonconformity." The two works proceed along different lines, and will be found to be mutually helpful. Indeed, whilst Doctor Hailey's book is not always accurate on minor points, I have been repeatedly laid under heavy obligations by my cultured pre-decessor in this entertaining field of research.
