Book excerpt: Everyone wants to be loved--to find someone who will stick with them through all of life's ups and downs, someone who is in it for the long haul. But in a world where dating is increasingly based on split-second decisions and geared toward casual relationships rather than marriage, it's easy for single people to feel discouraged, used, or unworthy of true love and lasting affection. Reality just never seems to match up with our (often wildly unrealistic) expectations. Jonathan "JP" Pokluda has counseled thousands of young singles through the pain and heartbreak of dating the world's way. Now he wants to dispel the myths, misconceptions, and fairy tales you've believed about dating and replace them with the truth from the One who invented marriage, created you to crave relationship, and is the very embodiment of true love. With plenty of true stories about relationships healed and love found, this practical book explains God's purposes for singleness, dating, and marriage and covers why you should date, who you should date, and how you should date. If you're ready to trade the world's way of dating for the way that actually works, it's time to begin dating well.

Book excerpt: Romance and love are in a state of crisis: Statistically speaking, young women today are living romantic lives of all kinds—but they’re still feeling bogged down by social, cultural, economic, and familial pressures to love in a certain way. Young women in the modern world have greater flexibility than ever when it comes to who we choose to love and how we choose to love them; but while social circumstances may have changed since our parents’ generation, certain life expectations remain. In Outdated, Samhita Mukhopadhyay addresses the difficulty of negotiating loving relationships within the borderlands of race, culture, class, and sexuality-and of holding true to our convictions and maintaining our independence while we do it. Outdated analyzes how different forms of media, cultural norms, family pressure, and even laws, are produced to scare women into believing that if they don’t devote themselves to finding a man, they’ll be doomed to a life of loneliness and shame. Using interviews with young women that are living around, between, within, and outside of the romantic industrial complex, Mukhopadhyay weaves a narrative of the alternative ways that women today have elected to live their lives, and in doing so offers a fresh, feminist look at an old topic: How do diverse, independent young women date happily and successfully—and outside of the box?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An economy of services largely dominates our world today, but no patent system is available to support it. All signs point increasingly to evidence that in almost all countries—and as enshrined in the TRIPS Agreement—patent rules and procedures are seriously handicapped in their incapacity to respond to current economic reality. Many inventions today are made without any materiality, yet they are nonetheless genuine inventions, such as those that arise from the banking, insurance and business consulting industries. Today’s patent system remains deeply linked to the making of things with human hands. It must evolve and adapt so that the new economy can also benefit from its advantages. This book is about that adaptation—which will come, or, rather, as the author shows, has slowly started to come. By describing details and historical events that shed light on how patent law has evolved from the pre-industrial to the industrial economy, the book manifests the need for a further evolution of patents to the post-industrial economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outrageous collection of inappropriate ads will have you turning the pages and shaking your head in disbelief. Outdated Advertising: Memories from a Less-than-PC Era takes a look at print advertising from the mid-1850s through the 1980s with an eye toward ads that were notorious for their sexist, racist, politically-incorrect, or other wildly inappropriate content—or for just plain bad taste. Among the dozens of full-color examples, readers will find: a woman being spanked by her husband for not buying the right coffee the story of a mother having to turn her child over to an orphanage because her late husband didn’t keep up his life insurance payments Aunt Jemima declaring “Happy days is here!” because of her new pancake recipe doctors promoting particular brands of cigarettes the Michael Jackson Rainbow Brite portable record player with the copy line, “Gifts to keep children singing.” Advertising has changed over the decades—that is a major understatement. Despite the nostalgia of such shows as Mad Men, the outrageous images in Outdated Advertising show readers just how far we’ve come since then.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of these scripts is to expose and air out the unprovable stances and influences of religious belief and its exploitation with no absolute condemnation on conventional beliefs. Conventional religion tends to cancel itself with the passage of time. Detailed descriptions are enclosed. The nutshell has it that in comparing archaic beliefs to unfolding beliefs, time is revealing a picture of inevitable and irreversible changes in those beliefs. Following the process of these changes will allow one to blend with them while broadening their scope on life or whatever else. Humans have precariously searched for a form of security that lessened the burden of exposure to accepting responsibility for living a life on planet Earth. Then, someone or other discovered, invented or rationalized something they believed was bigger and more powerful than them. Over a period of mankinds time, that power of belief became a dominant source of security and eventually emanated a belief of living forever in this illusionary state of security. Humans have been trapped into misconception, misunderstanding and vulnerable susceptibility for millenniums concerning their nature of choice in believing almost anything including the need for some type of mind salvation. An evolution of belief is slowly transforming from archaic views to a spiritual, consciousness of future orientation. Insight on basic and spiritual belief is covered.

Book excerpt: This book makes an honest attempt to explain and clarify what many term as the way of the cross. The Cross understood to mean not only the form of death Jesus suffered for us but the place where believers of every age have experienced death to self- preservation, self-serving , a complete undoing of our natural carnal man. This is the meeting place of two wills; ours and Gods and the emergence of only one- Gods. I have come to do Thy will Oh my God This was the mandate that beat in the heart of Jesus; it must become ours as well. For decades now another gospel has been preached across the land and has conveniently set aside the Cross as some outdated piece of furniture tucked away in the attic no longer desired on the main floor. The hundred and one success messages and books all clamouring for our attention to be implemented into our lives have after some thirty plus years left the North American church with little more than vital signs let alone abundant life. We may have learned about His acts, but sadly we have not known His ways. His ways oftentimes lead to trials, adversity and suffering contrary to popular teaching. The vehicle that will transport us into His Presence is so often designed by God to take us via the wilderness places of His choosing. The journey begins with our entrance as spiritual infants into the Kingdom. However, where we end up and how long it takes us to mature are our choice and the consequences of our choice alone. This is to be sure called the narrow road, albeit narrow it is however the road that leads to our transformation into the full grown mature sons and daughters of God. This is the Hebrews 12 roadmap to remove our illegitimacy, and to be brought near to the Father Himself. There are no other roads. If you are tired of circling the mountains never being able to breakthrough into true communion with God, then its time to embrace the cross in your life and let it transport you into His Presence. There is no mystical formula that leads to life in and maturity in Christ. Our brokenness before God releases the Anointing and character of Christ so often preached but rarely manifested. This book will not reveal new answers or keys to help you on your journey. You will find however, Biblical truth that will ring its witness in your spirit that will be confirmed with scripture and by the Spirit of God. Let us all individually as well as corporately return to the Cross, may it once again be taught, embraced and lived out in the Christian Church and maybe then the glory of God will fill the House.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “One of the most important books I’ve ever read—an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates “Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” —Melinda Gates "Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends—what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school—we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective—from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future. --- “This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance...Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

Book excerpt: This book offers an introduction to cloud computing and serverless computing for students, researchers and R&D organizations through several practical examples. Rather than focusing exclusively on the computational issues related to cloud computing, the authors focus on addressing the multidisciplinary applications of cloud computing for daily research work in public institutions and private companies in fields such as archaeology, geosciences, computer sciences, medicine and physics. The book also discusses the emergence of serverless computing over the last three years as a means to make computational infrastructures more apparent to users, avoiding the need to concern one's self with the type of server or computing machine needed to perform a computing task. These topics are presented from the perspective of users, researchers and decision-makers, and are approached based on the authors' collective experience on the use and adoption of cloud computing.
