Book excerpt: The creation of this work is an invitation to step into the world of the dancer and vicariously experience the passion and motivation for the dance arts. This book’s focus centers on the power and spirituality of the dance told through the life stories of two dance artists, Magda and Gertrud Hahn. This work additionally invites the reader to celebrate the sublime and nuanced inner and outer experiences achieved through dancing. Foremost, in these pages you will accompany two sisters, who faced many challenges throughout their lives, but were sustained and inspired by their love of dance. The Hanova School of Modern Studies in Body Sculpture and the Classical Dance occurred throughout the twentieth century on three continents around the world and may be largely forgotten, but a record of the Hahn sisters’ lives may be seen as one of many important personal narratives to be read in order to understand the history and formation of the modern dance we enjoy today.

Book excerpt: The creation of this work is an invitation to step into the world of the dancer and vicariously experience the passion and motivation for the dance arts. This book's focus centers on the power and spirituality of the dance told through the life stories of two dance artists, Magda and Gertrud Hahn. This work additionally invites the reader to celebrate the sublime and nuanced inner and outer experiences achieved through dancing. Foremost, in these pages you will accompany two sisters, who faced many challenges throughout their lives, but were sustained and inspired by their love of dance. The Hanova School of Modern Studies in Body Sculpture and the Classical Dance occurred throughout the twentieth century on three continents around the world and may be largely forgotten, but a record of the Hahn sisters' lives may be seen as one of many important personal narratives to be read in order to understand the history and formation of the modern dance we enjoy today. Karen McKinlay Kurnaedy tells much more than a story of a life-long passion for dance. She reveals a deep understanding of the spiritual dimension of dance, and how the magic of movement can unite people across continents, cultures and generations in a common journey towards a higher level of human existence. Our Love Affair with Dance is a major contribution to our understanding of dance as a transcultural phenomenon. Isabella Schwaderer, PhD Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, Germany We are fortunate to glean the lessons of Magda and Gertrud Hanovas' lives through this exquisite book by Kurnaedy, who seamlessly contextualizes their work within history, dance, and pedagogy. What I am left with is that dance not only touches the soul, but originates from the soul. In Magda's words, "Without art, humanity has no meaningful future. We need to dance our way to inner and outer peace and tranquility." This book is a gift to humanity in a time where we need to remember to dance our way to peace, even in turmoil. Celeste Snowber, PhD Performer, Poet, Professor, Simon Fraser University Author of Embodied Prayer and Embodied Inquiry: Writing, Living and Being through the Body Karen Kurnaedy's extensive research into the history of two fascinating dance artists is a picture of a Vancouver that doesn't exist anymore, yet it is an influence that still permeates the life of art and of artists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when two enterprising young women give up their Madison Avenue salaries, leave the glamorous whirl of New York behind, and move up to Maine to become proprietors of a country store? That's what Scotty Mackenzie and Dorothy Mignault did back in the 1940s, and Scotty's spirited account of their often hilarious setbacks and triumphs has been a well-love classic ever since. When she traded in her silk stockings and pumps for jeans and tennis shoes, Scotty learned a lot--about the people of Goose Rocks Beach, near Kennebunkport, where the store served summer people and year-round residents alike; about the hard work it takes to run a business during the hectic tourist season; about the wisdom to be gained from the solitude of a Maine winter; and most of all, about the strength of a community that sticks together through the best of times and the worst of tragedies. For Goose Rocks Beach, the tragedy swept in with the flames of the infamous Fire of '47, which leveled the small seaside community. Not only is My Love Affair with the State of Maine as fresh and enjoyable a read today as when it was first published, but over the years its value as a snapshot of a bygone era has increased. This new edition contains pictures and an afterword from Scotty herself, filling us in on her adventures since the book was written. It is a rare glimpse of the Maine that was, and that lives on in the hearts of all those who have had their own love affairs with the State of Maine.

A longing for a new love affair surprisingly launched her on an inward journey through her past. She found her many life adventures recast as spiritual epiphanies. In My Love Affairs with Life: A Spiritual Memoir, Linthorst takes us along on her daily nature walks, her year of seminary study in Scotland, and a family pilgrimage to medieval English cathedrals. She shares seminal insights from novels by C. S. Lewis and Charles Williams and the poetry of Mary Oliver. Linthorst introduces us to the spiritual teachers who brought healing and transformation, and opens up about the funny and painful romance that led to her marriage to Jan, a Jesuit priest from Holland. Throughout My Love Affairs with Life: A Spiritual Memoir, Linthorst allows herself to be shown where God has consistently met her in beauty and love. Enter into the very process of spiritual self-discovery and find a fresh perspective on your own life story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have titled this short story “The Dancing Will Never End; A Short Story of a Love Affair”. If a person takes into consideration the time we began going steady till Cleo’s death, we spent over Sixty Years together. Ours was not the type of love which is written about in fictional love stories. The romantic love left after a while. As this superficial romantic love faded true love took hold. The romantic love was but the soil and fertilizer which allowed our true love to flourish and grow so deeply. Having said this, our relationship and love affair was not a life spent kissing or ‘lovie dovie”, never having an argument or agreeing on everything. Our love if viewed by an outside observer would not manifest itself as any different as the relationship one may observe of any other married couple. But it was different we had become truly one and this was our love affair. In our relationship, we learned to listen to each other, make compromises and respect each other. We not only listened to each other, we made decisions together. Separation or divorces were words which were never part of our vocabulary. This action was one we would never have contemplated. We learned to accept each other’s faults, adjust our own behavior so as to meld with each other. We loved each other enough to work out any problem or disappointment even when something hurtful had been said. Our love was like poet’s have written, “An unconditional love that is most understanding and a vulnerable love that supports, comforts and is “DETERMINED TO TRIUMPH OVER EVERY CHALLENGE OR ADVERSITY IT MAY ENCOUNTER”. I first fell in love with Cleo at the Sadie Hawkins Dance. We professed our love to each other at our high school Sock hop dance. We danced all of our lives till Cleo’s medical condition did not allow doing so. As long as I am alive and neither my memory or mental acuity fails me, the dancing will never end.

Book excerpt: American Society for Aesthetics Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award Dancing in Blackness is a professional dancer's personal journey over four decades, across three continents and 23 countries, and through defining moments in the story of black dance in America. In this memoir, Halifu Osumare reflects on what blackness and dance have meant to her life and international career. Osumare's story begins in 1960s San Francisco amid the Black Arts Movement, black militancy, and hippie counterculture. It was there, she says, that she chose dance as her own revolutionary statement. Osumare describes her experiences as a young black dancer in Europe teaching "jazz ballet" and establishing her own dance company in Copenhagen. Moving to New York City, she danced with the Rod Rodgers Dance Company and took part in integrating the programs at the Lincoln Center. After doing dance fieldwork in Ghana, Osumare returned to California and helped develop Oakland’s black dance scene. Osumare introduces readers to some of the major artistic movers and shakers she collaborated with throughout her career, including Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Jean-Leon Destine, Alvin Ailey, and Donald McKayle. Now a black studies scholar, Osumare uses her extraordinary experiences to reveal the overlooked ways that dance has been a vital tool in the black struggle for recognition, justice, and self-empowerment. Her memoir is the inspiring story of an accomplished dance artist who has boldly developed and proclaimed her identity as a black woman.

Book excerpt: Within the framework of the research project InnoLernenTanz at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden, in this book Jenny Coogan – professor of contemporary dance at the same institution – offers a forum in which she and guest authors consider questions such as: How are the parameters crucial to the understanding of contemporary dance, such as personal agency, actually embodied? How does the German system of dance education foster such parameters? How can somatic approaches contribute to encouraging dancers to experience their education from a first-person perspective of authority with enhanced self-reliance, self-reflection, and social consciousness? Practicing Dance: A Somatic Orientation includes accounts of field research, essays and interviews, as well as suggestions for studio practice that demonstrate the synergy between contemporary dance and the Feldenkrais Method. The range of perspectives offered invites critical reflection on methods to support young dance artists in embracing the twenty-first century challenges of professional performing careers.

Book excerpt: Why it really does take two to tango . . . At forty-five, Jamie Rose was an independent, take-charge woman whose career as an actress was going nicely, with frequent roles on hit television shows and in films. Yet there was one area of her life that wasn't working: her love life. She'd been living with her boyfriend for five years, and although she was ready to get married, he wasn't. His reason? They fought too much-and unfortunately, he was right. But something magical happened when she signed up for tango lessons: She began to appreciate the power of being a partner in a dance for two-and that letting someone else take the lead from time to time wasn't giving up, but rather, letting go. In this funny and wise book, Rose shares with readers the life lessons she's learned from tango and the other great partner dance traditions. Dance changed Rose's life, and she discovered that she wasn't the only one. Over and over, the women she encountered at dance halls-women from age twenty to ninety-three-told her how falling in love with dance helped them fall in love with life again. The secret? Whereas before they may have worried that if they let go of their grip on things for a moment, everything would fall apart, now they knew that sometimes letting go of the lead was the best way to keep things together-especially in a relationship. For anyone who has ever marveled at Fred and Ginger up on the silver screen (how could they be so in sync?), Shut Up & Dance shows readers how to dance their way into a happier, sexier life-even if they never step onto a dance floor.

Book excerpt: Paris and the Musical explores how the famous city has been portrayed on stage and screen, investigates why the city has been of such importance to the genre and tracks how it has developed as a trope over the 20th and 21st centuries. From global hits An American in Paris, Gigi, Les Misérables, Moulin Rouge! and The Phantom of the Opera to the less widely-known Bless the Bride, Can-Can, Irma la Douce and Marguerite, the French capital is a central character in an astounding number of Broadway, Hollywood and West End musicals. This collection of 18 essays combines cultural studies, sociology, musicology, art and adaptation theory, and gender studies to examine the envisioning and dramatisation of Paris, and its depiction as a place of romance, hedonism and libertinism or as ‘the capital of the arts’. The interdisciplinary nature of this collection renders it as a fascinating resource for a wide range of courses; it will be especially valuable for students and scholars of Musical Theatre and those interested in Theatre and Film History more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescription, illicit, and recreational drugs touch all of our lives yet a basic understanding of these chemicals is largely absent among Americans. Jerrold Winter offers a comprehensive account of psychoactive drugs, chemicals which influence our brains in myriad ways. Manifestations of their influence on the brain are quite varied. There may be the comfort provided by opioids to those who are dying or in pain or, in everyday life, the surge of contentment for the users of caffeine, nicotine, heroin, alcohol, or marijuana upon the taking of their drug of choice. Turning to the more exotic, a drug such as LSD may alter the way the world looks to us; it may even inspire thoughts of God. Adding to the purely scientific questions which confront us are the ways in which our society chooses to respond to the presence of psychoactive drugs. Should they be banned and their users sent to prison, tolerated as a reflection of man's eternal search for an escape from anxiety, pain, and the monotony of daily life, or celebrated as therapeutically useful agents? Our Love Affair with Drugs is written for experts and novices alike. There are stories of, for example, how Timothy Leary caused the repeal of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Readers will learn of the transformation by Sir Charles Locock of a drug intended to dampen female sexual activity into the first effective drug for the treatment of the ancient disease of epilepsy. Alexander Shulgin's love of psychoactive drugs and his unconventional research practices illuminate the story of methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a.k.a. Ecstasy, a drug now likely to find value in treating veterans and others suffering post-traumatic distress disorder. Winter links the excitement of drug discovery with the very practical matter of balancing the benefits and risks of these drugs.
