Book excerpt: Things don't always go the way we intend. It's easy to feel discouraged because what we hope for is badly thwarted, or because people make life difficult. Paul, writing to the Philippians from prison, certainly knew what it was like to have plans interrupted. But he maintains robust confidence in God's overruling power, even when everything seems to be going wrong. These eight studies will help us learn from Paul the art of seeing God's purposes working out through problems and difficulties, and will deepen our own confidence in God's power.

Book excerpt: “You have a call, Elder Wilder.” When missionary Micah Wilder set his sights on bringing a Baptist congregation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had no idea that he was the one about to be changed. Yet when he finally came to know the God of the Bible, Micah had no choice but to surrender himself—no matter the consequences. For a passionate young Mormon who had grown up in the Church, finding authentic faith meant giving up all he knew: his community, his ambitions, and his place in the world. Yet as Micah struggled to reconcile the teachings of his Church with the truths revealed in the Bible, he awakened to his need for God’s grace. This led him to be summoned to the door of the mission president, terrified but confident in the testimony he knew could cost him everything. Passport to Heaven is a gripping account of Micah’s surprising journey from living as a devoted member of a religion based on human works to embracing the divine mercy and freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

Then He took the cup, saying, This is my blood. Next, He commanded the disciples to eat and drink in remembrance of Him. What did Jesus mean? Do the bread and wine literally become His body and blood? What happens when Christians take the Lord's Supper? In The Lord's Supper: Answers to Common Questions, Dr. Keith A. Mathison walks through these questions and several others to help us better understand this sacrament. Far from being an empty ritual, the Lord's Supper is a means of grace, a source of spiritual nourishment, and true communion with Christ and His church.

Book excerpt: Dante's political thought has long constituted a major area of interest for Dante studies, yet the poet's political views have traditionally been considered a self-contained area of study and viewed in isolation from the poet's other concerns. Consequently, the symbolic and poetic values which Dante attaches to political structures have been largely ignored or marginalised by Dante criticism. This omission is addressed here by Claire Honess, whose study of Dante's poetry of citizenship focuses on more fundamental issues, such as the relationship between the individual and the community, the question of what it means to be a citizen, and above all the way in which notions of cities and citizenship enter the imagery and structure of the Commedia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeling overwhelmed and unproductive? The answer isn’t to do more. What image forms in your mind when you think of productivity? An assembly line? Spreadsheets? Business suits or workplace uniforms? In the ancient world, productivity didn't conjure images like these. Instead, it referred to crop yield and fruit bearing. This agrarian imagery helps us understand productivity through a biblical lens. Jesus taught, By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit (John 15:8). Who doesn’t want to have a truly productive life—to bear much fruit? But how does this happen in the places we hold dear—the home, workplace, and in our communities? We often feel overworked and overrun, defeated and discouraged. The world says be productive so that you can get all you can out of this life. The Bible says be productive so you can gain more of the next life. In Redeeming Productivity, author Reagan Rose explores how God’s glory is the purpose for which He planted us. And he shows how productivity must be firmly rooted in the gospel. Only through our connection to Christ—the True Vine—are we empowered to produce good fruit. This book shows how we can maintain the vitality of that connection through simple, life-giving disciplines. Readers will discover manageable applications like giving God the first fruits of our days. Additionally, Reagan discusses how our perspective on suffering is transformed as we see trials as God’s pruning for greater productivity.

Book excerpt: New covenant believers live between "the already" and "not yet," a point in redemptive history between the partial and complete fulfillment of God's promises. This means they are exiles and pilgrims in the divinely ordained overlap of the ages. As Rev. Jason J. Stellman argues in his book Dual Citizens: Worship and Life Between the Already and the Not Yet, this biblical motif shapes the identity of Christians at every turn and affects their every activity in both the sacred and secular realms. Stellman explores the Christian pilgrimage with deep biblical insight, humor, and relevance to our contemporary context, revealing how Christians are to think of themselves and their role this side of heaven.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvation and human flourishing--a life marked by fulfillment and well-being--have often been divorced in the thinking and practice of the church. For the apostle Paul, however, the two were inseparable in the vision for the good life. Drawing on the revolutionary teachings and kingdom proclamation of Jesus, Paul and the early church issued a challenge to the ancient world's dominant narratives of flourishing. Paul's conviction of Jesus' universal Lordship emboldened him to imagine not just another world, but this world as it might be when transformed. With Paul and the Good Life, Julien Smith introduces us afresh to Paul's vision for the life of human flourishing under the reign of Jesus. By placing Paul's letters in conversation with both ancient virtue ethics and kingship discourse, Smith outlines the Apostle's christologically shaped understanding of the good life. Numerous Hellenistic philosophical traditions situated the individual cultivation of virtue within the larger telos of the flourishing polis. Against this backdrop, Paul regards the church as a heavenly commonwealth whose citizens are being transformed into the character of its king, Jesus. Within this vision, salvation entails both deliverance from the deforming power of sin and the re-forming of the person and the church through embodied allegiance to Jesus. Citizenship within this commonwealth calls for a countercultural set of virtues, ones that foster unity amidst diversity and the care of creation. Smith concludes by enlisting the help of present-day interlocutors to draw out the implications of Paul's argument for our own context. The resulting conversation aims to place Paul in engagement with missional hermeneutics, spiritual disciplines, liturgical formation, and agrarianism. Ultimately, Paul and the Good Life invites us to imagine how citizens of this heavenly commonwealth might live in the in-between time, in which Jesus's reign has been inaugurated but not consummated.

Excerpt: ... heaven, A place "If God had told me some time ago that He was about to make me as happy as I could be in this world, and then had told me that He should begin by crippling me in all my limbs, and removing me from all my usual sources of enjoyment, I should have thought it a very strange mode of accomplishing His purpose. And yet, how is His wisdom manifest even in this I for if you should see a man shut up in a close room, idolizing a set of lamps and rejoicing in their light, and you wished to make him truly happy, you would begin by blowing out all his lamps; and then throw open the shutters to let in the light of heaven."--Samuh, Ruthbrjord. heaven is a place. Out of the region of all fancy it is taken and put into the realm of the actual, the local. The revelations of the bare fact that death does not end all, death cannot end all; that man must exist to all eternity, that the future may be one of unutterable bliss, --that is the fact. This fact may have many colorings, many symbols, but these are not the main things, nor of the main thing. Heaven does not float around. It is not made of air, thin air. It is real, a country, a clime, a home sacred affinities draw to the spot.. Divine assurance settles and fixes the fact. Heaven might be a reality, but simply a state. In its location and grasp it might be airy, volatile. The Bible statement is of a place. One of the main ideas contained in the heavenly symbol, of a city, is place, location, a settled place, in contrast with a pilgrim state, unsettled and temporary. The strong argument for heaven as a place centers in, and clusters about Jesus. The man Jesus, bearing a man's form, the body He wore on earth, has a place assigned Him--a high place. "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted...

Book excerpt: About the BookCitizenship of HeavenThe inspiration for writing this book was given to me by the Holy Spirit. Having gone through so many travails of life myself, I came to the realisation that our time here on earth is not permanent. In fact, no matter how much that I view and think of time, I realise now more than ever that life on earth, by whatever parameter we measure is transient. Eternity is a reality; be it the eternity of Heaven or the eternity of hell. No matter what you and I may think of today; the end is bound to come at some point in time. The ultimate question therefore is; 'where will you and I spend eternity?' Quoting the famous televangelist, Billy Graham; 'The Bible doesn't answer all our questions about heaven and life after death-and the reason is because our minds are limited and heaven is far too glorious for us to understand. Someday, all of our questions will be answered-but not yet. As the Apostle Paul wrote; ''For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully" (1 Corinthians 13:12). Are you a Citizen of Heaven?Recently, I had to re-evaluate everything in my life. I mean everything; where I started from, what I had been through and where I am right now. Thereafter, I came to the conclusion that definitely my home is not on this earth. I am only 'passing through'. My home is definitely in heaven. At that point I began to appreciate the fact that it is absolutely of no consequence 'per se' how long we actually live (i.e. age) on the earth, where (city, town, village) where we are born, the house (mansion, castle, building) we live, the food we eat or even the language that we speak etc. All those things are only of relevance when we are here on earth. In other words all the basic indices of food, shelter, clothing, safety, language, colour, creed, gender etc have relevance only in the context of our earthly life and citizenship when we are here on earth. These indices or factors do not determine our purpose on earth neither do they signpost us to heaven in any way. Heaven is a reality and so is hell. Only those who are qualified to be there will enter into heaven at the end of the age. I mean only those who have the citizenship identity and status will make it into heaven. The question therefore is not whether you and I have will die but where will we spend eternity. Do you have the heavenly citizenship status?
