Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Educational Problem In 1908, when Lala Har Dayal wrote these articles for the Punjabee I labouredunder the belief that some kind of education was better than no education, but my opinions. Have since undergone a great change and now I feel that while upto a certain point this education did us a certain amount of good, for some years backwards however it has been productive of positive harm. It has helped in the multiplication of intellectual and economic parasites and retarded our progress towards freedom. At no time in my life had I any doubt about the underlying motive-of the British Government in their educational policy, but these articles and some others written by the editor of the Modern Review, published in 1908 - 10 confirmed me in my suspicions. Mr. Gandhi's propaganda and the opportunities that it has afforded me of testing the effects of this education by experience acquired in the present struggle for political liberty, has streng thened me in my original belief. At the pre-4 sent moment, I strongly believe that this sys tem of education is more harmful than useful that it is emasculating and enervating that it is denationalizing and degrading; and that the so-called educated man is more effective a. Hindrance to our progress in political freedom. Than his uneducated brother. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ideal teaching focuses in suggestion. The more interest on the child's part, the nearer the nascent period for the topic, the more genius and ability, the lighter may the suggestion be and the less method is necessary to touch off the innate springs, the less repetition is necessary and the more sure and permanent the acquisi tion. Such teaching at the right psychological moment is, like a hint to the wise, sufficient. Biographies and religion abound with instances where a chance word or event, or per haps the unconscious influence of a single teacher or acquaint ance, has changed the whole current of life. This is the right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the United States Faced Its Educational Problem When this duty was proposed to me I was told that the thoughts of the community were turned towards a broadening of university work to meet the wants of the broader age in which we live; and that therefore this opening address might properly discuss the demands for a more practical training that form one phase of your ever-widening educational problem. But the whole question of education under this Government is at this moment in the political melting pot. It is, therefore, a question from which any dis orcet representative of another Government flees, as from the plague. I was next advised that something about educa tional affairs in my own country would be a topic of special local interest, and this perhaps one may venture upon without offence. Yet even here it would be easy to be misunderstood. The conditions with us are not the same. In fact, several of them are so unlike British conditions as to make it probable that what seems to suit the one country might be found quite unsuitable for the other. Far be it from me therefore to dream of holding up our experience for imitation or even for instruction! Still, intelligent people, intent on any perplexing subject, are always interested and sometimes helped in noting how other people have had to deal with somewhat similar subjects. And so, without further preface or apology, I respond to the authoritative intimations I have received, by inviting your attention to the way in which the United States has faced its educational problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Educational Problem: The Jewish Population and the Protestant Schools The second important step in educational matters was taken in 1824, when the Fabrique act was passed authorizing each Roman Catholic parish to devote one quarter of its annual Church revenue to the support of a school for the parish. Under these two acts temporary provision was made for elementary education in a large number of the English and French sections of the Province during the first quarter of the past century. The first public elementary school act for the Province was passed in the year 1829. This act provided that five trustees, elected in each parish or township, should have the management of schools in that district. The act provided for a limited number of schools and a grant of 20 was paid by the Government to each teacher on condition that the school was in operation at least 90 days, and had an average attendance of 20 pupils. These schools were for the rural districts, they were voluntary, free, and without taxation. Although the schools established under this act took their colour as to language and religious teaching, from the communities which maintained them, they were common schools, recognising no religious distinction in the community. As these schools were supported by the Government and the grants were paid through the local member of the Legislature, the people in the French districts of the Province regarded this system as a political propaganda for the destruction of their language and religion. The schools, therefore, under this act met with only a moderate measure of success. About 1300 schools, however, were established under the provision of this act with an attendance of about 36,000 pupils. They have been an organised, effective branch of our educational system for over a century, and have played an important part - greater than is generally realised - in the uplifting Of the people. Yet, notwithstanding the great strides education has made, and the adoption Of reformed and more scientific methods Of instruction in our Day Schools, the Sunday School has, generally speaking, advanced very little from its early type. The Sunday School is with us: the question is, are we to keep it If so, then we must reform it. This little book has been penned in the hope of drawing the attention of the reader to the existence of a Sunday School Problem, and to promote in some measure Sunday School reform. We must first realise that our Sunday Schools are lagging behind educationally. Then we must find the causes for this, and, finally, endeavour to remove them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Education If these papers have but the smallest effect in indicating the great difficulty and range of the questions which an educational theorist must consider, I shall be more than satisfied. Mr. Michael Sadler, in an eloquent address which I had the good fortune to hear, defined Educational Theory as a meeting place of the Moral Sciences; and I have endeavoured somewhat to work on this conception. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Teacher's Problems Books dealing with the technic of teaching have almost invariably emphasized the importance of the inductive method. These same books have commonly proposed certain principles based upon psychology, and have sought to indicate the validity of these generalizations by more or less pertinent illustrations; but they have been almost wholly deductive in their method of dealing with the principles of teaching. The author of this book has employed the inductive method in his discussion of every teacher's problems. The solution of problems has been urged as a method of stimulating the intellectual life of pupils, but the questions appearing in the pedagogical treatises have seldom involved the more difficult situations with which teachers have to deal every day of their professional life. In this book the author proposes many problems that have actually required solution as a part of the day's work. He has so grouped them that one is able to arrive at certain generalizations or statements of principle as a result of thinking through carefully the successful solutions proposed. The book will prove most helpful because of the reality of the issues discussed. It cannot fail to be intellectually stimulating because it is an embodiment of sound pedagogical procedure.
