Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Churches and Why We Belong to Them 1t might be feared that this volume would emphasize the differences in doctrine and Church government between the various Churches dealt with, and thus tend to separate them further from one another. Such, how ever, has not been the intention of the con tributors. On the contrary, it is hoped that on its perusal the impression left on the reader's mind will be, that the Churches do not differ so much as is generally supposed, and that many might combine with advantage to the progress of Christianity in this country, and throughout the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church for Americans The concern which this book manifests for the Ecclesiastical side of Christianity and the little it has to say about its spiritual and practical aspects, is due to what the writer considers to be, just now, the special religious need of our time and country. This is not instruction in the moral requirements of Christianity so much as the establishment of the fact that Christ founded a Church which has come down to us, and with some branch of which it is the privilege and duty of all to identify themselves. The idea that one Church is as good as another and that consequently it prac tically makes no difference to which we belong, is responsible for the enormous non-church element of the United States, which, according to the last census, amounted to more than half of the whole population, and for the loose hold which all bodies of Christians have upon their constituency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and Her Members What do we mean, then, when we speak about the Catholic Church? The Catechism tells us that it is the union of all the Faithful under one Head and that the Head of the Catholic Church is Jesus Christ. The Faithful, then, are those who believe in Jesus Christ, and look up to Him as their Master, who saved them by His death, and who teaches them what they must do on earth, so as to save their souls and so be worthy to live with Him in Heaven for all eternity. We all know that Jesus Christ is God the Son, made Man: and, with that knowledge, we all wish to be His friends, and to do what ever we can to please Him. It is Our Lord's wish, too; and that is one reason why He came to live down here on earth for a time, so that He could draw us all to Him, and get us to love and serve Him. Now it is not only one or two of us He wants, but all men. So, to make it easier for us, He founded His Church, that we might be all joined together to form one big body, or society. That is why we call the Church a union, or a joining together, of His faithful followers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To my fellow-members in the Church of Christ I desire affectionately and sincerely to dedicate the present little volume. My object is to direct their attention to that sacred society to which it is our privilege to belong, and with which our present happiness and our future hopes are so intimately connected. It is not, indeed, proposed to give a view of the polity or constitution of the Church, to consider its orders of ministers, its laws and canons, its synods, its rules of faith, its forms of worship, its authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

It is a spiritual body, rightfully composed only of those who have been te generated by Christ's Spirit and who have expressed this fact of regeneration in Christ's appoint-ed way. To stand for this central truth in heart and life is to be a Baptist. We can now look backward and inquire what Baptists have been and have done. I can deal only, in a large way, with the facts of the past, and details must be left to others. In general, we must say that Baptist history began two hun dred and fifty years ago. Before that time there were doubtless churches which held to some of the principles of the Baptist faith. But a clear recognition and confession Baptist of the great truth that the church is to be composed only Beginnings of those who give credible evidence of regeneration and who have expressed their faith by baptism in Christ's ap pointed way is not furnished in modern times by any definite and organized body before the year 1640. About that time the Particular Baptists of London, and shortly afterward the General Baptists of England, began to maintain that baptism belongs solely to believers and also that nothing but immersion is baptism. But both these bodies saw in the outward ordinance the sign of a living union with Christ. They wished to build a spiritual church, a church separate from the world, a church after the pattern shown in the mount, a church spiritual because scriptural, a church in which Christ could dwell because it had been constituted according to his laws as they are laid down in the New Testament. When we speak of membership in the Church, without any further qualification, we are generally understood to refer to the body of the Church, or, what amounts to the same thing, to the visible Church. This alone, correctly speaking, forms a social body. To belong to the Church, then, is to be a member of the visible Church or the body of the Church. We belong to the Church really and in fact '(re) when we actually form part of this great social body. To that end we must have been initiated into it through baptism. Book excerpt: Practical and Gospel-centered thoughts on how to have a fruitful ministry by one of America's leading and most beloved pastor. Many church leaders are struggling to adapt to a culture that values individuality above loyalty to a group or institution. There have been so many "church growth" and "effective ministry" books in the past few decades that it's hard to know where to start or which ones will provide useful and honest insight. Based on over twenty years of ministry in New York City, Timothy Keller takes a unique approach that measures a ministry's success neither by numbers nor purely by the faithfulness of its leaders, but on the biblical grounds of fruitfulness. Center Church outlines a balanced theological vision for ministry organized around three core commitments: Gospel-centered: The gospel of grace in Jesus Christ changes everything, from our hearts to our community to the world. It completely reshapes the content, tone, and strategy of all that we do. City-centered: With a positive approach toward our culture, we learn to affirm that cities are wonderful, strategic, and under-served places for gospel ministry. Movement-centered: Instead of building our own tribe, we seek the prosperity and peace of our community as we are led by the Holy Spirit. "Between a pastor's doctrinal beliefs and ministry practices should be a well-conceived vision for how to bring the gospel to bear on the particular cultural setting and historical moment. This is something more practical than just doctrine but much more theological than "how-to steps" for carrying out a ministry. Once this vision is in place, it leads church leaders to make good decisions on how to worship, disciple, evangelize, serve, and engage culture in their field of ministry—whether in a city, suburb, or small town." — Tim Keller, Core Church

Book excerpt: From comic books to summer blockbusters, all people enjoy art in some form or another. However, few of us can effectively explain why certain books, movies, and songs resonate so profoundly within us. In Echoes of Eden, Jerram Barrs helps us identify the significance of artistic expression as it reflects the extraordinary creativity and unmatched beauty of the Creator God. Additionally, Barrs provides the key elements for evaluating and defining great art: (1) The glory of the original creation; (2) The tragedy of the curse of sin; (3) The hope of final redemption and renewal. These three qualifiers are then put to the test as Barrs investigates five of the world's most influential authors who serve as ideal case studies in the exploration of the foundations and significance of great art.
