The construction of the rail line, which started in 1869, was the impetus for the establishment of many towns, and even the relocation of some, along the route. The line was employed to transport miners to the Black Hills during the gold rush of the late 1800s, it carried thousands of Irish and German immigrants to the largely unsettled area, and it allowed politicians to meet their constituents. It also was used to deliver necessities, amusements, technology, and new innovations to the state's citizenry.

Drawing on his extensive research, interviews, and personal experience as a 4-H leader, county extension agent, fair judge, and lifelong fairgoer, Apps takes readers back through 178 years of Wisconsin fair history, covering everything from horsepulling and calf-showing contests to exhibit judging to the roar of gasoline engines powering the midway rides. He evokes the sights and sounds of fairs through the ages while digging in to the political and social forces that shaped the fair into an icon of our rural heritage. Illustrated with vintage and modern photos and featuring the voices of exhibitors, judges, volunteers, and visitors, Meet Me on the Midway vividly captures the thrills and cherished memories of these beloved annual gatherings.

Book excerpt: Home on the Range chronicles the epic drama of the settling and development of the High Plains, as viewed through the saga of journalist James Dickenson's family and the wheat-farming community of McDonald, Kansas. With a reporter's sharp eye for detail and human drama, as well as a lucid understanding of the grand sweep of history, Dickenson paints a highly personal portrait of American rural life and its tenacious struggle to survive. By turns lyrical, nostalgic, and unflinchingly realistic, Dickenson weaves a fascinating narrative in which shootouts, lynchings, human chicanery, and nature's treachery test the community's unswerving faith in hard work, tradition, and themselves.

This was followed by the turmoil the company went through, following a corporate raid, and by reorganizing the management team and how by featuring Ben Hogan in an ad campaign at the Riviera Country Club pole-vaulted the company to once again become the leader in golf club manufacturing. Then how by working with Ben Hogan to develop the Edge, the first cavity back club ever produced, elevated the company to the highest revenue levels in the history of the company. Finally, the book covers Hogan’s downward spiral after a Japanese company purchased them and how they systematically unraveled Hogan’s previous astounding success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two centuries after Lewis and Clark paddled down the Columbia Gorge so vividly pictured on the books cover, Jack Beattys memoir describes how young veterans of WW II moved into Oregons political life, revived the Democratic party, cooperated with young Republicans and forced legislative reapportionment. Months later Beatty defended the constitutional amendment from legal challenge. As counsel to the Democratic Party and later as a lawyer Jack dealt with Oregons two combustible Democratic senators, Wayne Morse and Richard L. Neuberger, then with Senator Maureen Neyberger elected to succeed her husband following his untimely death. Beatty suggested Sidney I. Lezak as Oregons U.S. Attorney to Congresswoman Edith Green. Lezaks appointment was famously blocked by Senator Maureen Neuberger for a year. Practicing law, co-chairing Robert Kennedys Oregon campaign for the presidency, Beatty served six years on the Portland School Board leading that urban district through the difficult late sixties. Governor Tom McCall appointed him to the Circuit Court, Governor Robert Straub appointed him to his Task Force on Corrections which proposed major changes in criminal law. Chief Justice Denecke made Judge Beatty legislative spokesman for the Judicial Conference and vice chair of the Commission for the Judicial Branch in the great restructuring of Oregons courts in the 1980s. Retiring from the court in 1985, Beatty served until 1990 as Vice Chair of the Criminal Justice Council under former Speaker Hardy Meyers in a massive reformation of Oregons criminal sentencing process. In 1996 Judge Beatty chared a Portland City Club study of the Oregon Initiative which proposed major limitations to that constitutional process. A candid description of history in the making, this memoir is also a concise description of the role of judging and the complex problems of our criminal justice system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distilled from Arkansas: A Narrative History, the definitive work on the subject since its original publication in 2002, Arkansas: A Concise History is a succinct one-volume history of the state from the prehistory period to the present. Featuring four historians, each bringing his or her expertise to a range of topics, this volume introduces readers to the major issues that have confronted the state and traces the evolution of those issues across time. After a brief review of Arkansas’s natural history, readers will learn about the state’s native populations before exploring the colonial and plantation eras, early statehood, Arkansas’s entry into and role in the Civil War, and significant moments in national and global history, including Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, the Elaine race massacre, the Great Depression, both world wars, and the Civil Rights Movement. Linking these events together, Arkansas: A Concise History offers both an understanding of the state’s history and a perspective on that history’s implications for the political, economic, and social realities of today.
