Book Synopsis Othello in European Culture by : Elena Bandín Fuertes
Download or read book Othello in European Culture written by Elena Bandín Fuertes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues that a focus on the European reception of Othello represents an important contribution to critical work on the play. The chapters in this volume examine non-anglophone translations and performances, alternative ways of distinguishing between texts, adaptations and versions, as well as differing perspectives on questions of gender and race. Additionally, a European perspective raises key political questions about power and representation in terms of who speaks for and about Othello, within a European context profoundly divided over questions of immigration, religious, ethnic, gender and sexual difference. The volume illustrates the ways in which Othello has been not only a stimulus but also a challenge for European Shakespeares. It makes clear that the history of the play is inseparable from histories of race, religion and gender and that many engagements with the play have reinforced rather than challenged the social and political prejudices of the period.

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Adios. Despues de comer, acabaré el sermon.

Download or read book Otelo written by William Shakespeare and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Desdemona, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra by : Ana Maribel Moreno G.
Download or read book Desdemona, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra written by Ana Maribel Moreno G. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1616, William Shakespeare shuffled loose the mortal coil. In honor of his death four centuries ago, Ana Maribel de Moncada, Panamanian, professor of English at Panamas Universidad Especializada de la Amricas (UDELAS) created Desdemona, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra: Tragic Women in Shakespeares Plays, a literary analysis of three of Shakespeares most compelling, complicated, and cherished characters. Using information and insight gleaned from the works of her peers and other Shakespearean experts, Ana Maribels scholarly analysis of the importance of these three women as characters drew heavily upon the foundational works in which they appeared. The stories of Desdemona, the doomed wife of Othello; Lady Macbeth, the scheming queen from Macbeth; and Cleopatra, the all-powerful but ultimately tragic queen caught between love, rivalry, and ambition in Antony and Cleopatra are well documented through movies, novels, plays, operas, television, songs, and more. To entice students and educators alike, Ana Maribel designed her work to inspire both scholarly and casual reflection, analysis, and discussion of the works of the most well-known and respected English-language playwright. From the richness of the original plays, the author harvested the extensive detail and profound imagery found in Shakespearean text. To best honor Shakespeare four hundred years after his death, Ana Maribel sought to inspire a global celebration and discussion of his work and its impact on language, theatre, and literature in all segments of human society.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare in the Spanish Theatre by : Keith Gregor
Download or read book Shakespeare in the Spanish Theatre written by Keith Gregor and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare in the Spanish Theatre offers an account of Shakespeare's presence on the Spanish stage, from a production of the first Spanish rendering of Jean-François Ducis's Hamlet in 1772 to the creative and controversial work of directors like Calixto Bieito and Alex Rigola in the early 21st century. Despite a largely indirect entrance into the culture, Shakespeare has gone on to become the best and known and most widely performed of all foreign playwrights. What is more, by the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century there have been more productions of Shakespeare than of all of Spain's major Golden Age dramatists put together. This book explores and explains this spectacular rise to prominence and offers a timely overview of Shakespeare's place in Spain's complex and vibrant culture.
