Book excerpt: This book covers all aspects of OSWorkflow for Java developers and system architects, from basics of Business Process Management and installing OSWorkflow to developing complex Java applications and integrating this open-source Java workflow engine with the third-party components Drools for business rules, Quartz for task scheduling, and Pentaho for dashboards. Authored by an active developer of the OSWorkflow project, it gives step-by-step instructions, explaining the basics and clarifying and reinforcing principles with real-life examples. OSWorkflow is a pure Java open-source workflow engine for technical users, who can focus on the business logic and rules without Petri Net or finite state machine coding and easily integrate OSWorkflow into applications to create simple or complex workflows as needed. Because OSWorkflow provides a relatively low-level but highly flexible workflow implementation for Java developers, it is not a quick plug-and-play solution for non-technical users.

Book excerpt: Integrate Powerful Scheduling Capabilities into Any Java Application or Environment If your Java applications depend on tasks that must be performed at specific times or if your systems have recurring maintenance jobs that could be automated, then you need Quartz: the first full-featured, open source job scheduling framework. Quartz Job Scheduling Framework reveals how to make the most of Quartz with virtually any Java EE or Java SE application, from the smallest standalone program to the largest e-commerce application. Best-selling author Chuck Cavaness shows developers and architects how to integrate Quartz with leading open source Java frameworks, including Hibernate and Struts. Using practical examples, Cavaness illuminates everything from basic job scheduling to the use of Quartz in clustered environments and enterprise workflow applications. To jumpstart your own Quartz projects, he also presents a full chapter of “cookbook” sample code. Coverage includes • Understanding the value of scheduling in the enterprise environment • Installing and configuring the Quartz framework • Scheduling jobs, and triggering them on simple or complex schedules • Using JobStores to persist schedule information between JVM restarts • Using Listeners to receive callbacks from Quartz when key events occur • Extending Quartz with Plugins • Accessing Quartz through a Web-based graphical interface • Clustering Quartz applications, both horizontally and vertically • Using RMI to schedule Quartz remotely • Leveraging Quartz to automate maintenance and workflow

We trust that their audiences will mutually productively and happily mingle with those of the main conferences. A special mention for 2004 is in order for the new Doctoral Symposium Workshop where three young post-doc researchers organized an original set-up and formula to bring PhD students together and allow them to submit their research proposals for selection. A limited number of the submissions and their approaches will be independently evaluated by a panel of senior experts at the conference, and presented by the students in front of a wider audience. These students also got free access to all other parts of the OTM program, and only paid a heavily discounted fee for the Doctoral Symposium itself (in fact their attendance is largely sponsored by the other participants!). If evaluated as s- cessful, it is the intention of the General Chairs to expand this model in future editionsoftheOTMconferencesandsodrawinanaudienceofyoungresearchers to the OnTheMove forum. All three main conferences and the associated workshops share the dist- buted aspects of modern computing systems, and the resulting application-pull created by the Internet and the so-called Semantic Web.

This environment is emerging now with intelligent caring machines, cyborgs, wireless embedded continuous computing, healthwear, sensors, healthons, nanomedicine, adaptive process control, mathematical modeling and common sense systems. The human body and the world in which it functions is a continuously changing complex adaptive system. We are able to collect more and more data about it but the real challenge is to infer local dynamics from that data. Intelligent Caring Biomechatronic Creatures and Healthmaticians (mathematicians serving human health) have a better chance of inferring the dynamics that needs to be understood than human physicians. Humans can only process comfortably three dimensions while computers can see infinite number of dimensions. We will need to trust the distributed network of healthons, Intelligent Caring Creatures, and NURSES (New Unified Resource System Engineers) to create Health Extelligence. We need new vocabulary to push forward in a new way. For instance; healthons are tools combining prevention with diagnosis and treatment, based on continuous monitoring and analyzing of our vital signs and biochemistry. The 'Healthon Era' is just beginning. We are closer and closer to the world with healthons on your body, in your body and all around you; where not a doctor but your primary care healthmatician warns you about an approaching headache; and where NURSE programs your intelligent caring creatures so they can talk to your cells and stop disease in its tracks.

Book excerpt: This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the Tiangong-2 Data Utilization Conference, which was held in Beijing, China, in December 2018. As the first space laboratory in China, Tiangong-2 carries 3 new types of remote sensing payloads – the Wide-band Imaging Spectrometer (WIS), Three-dimensional Imaging Microwave Altimeter (TIMA), and Multi-band Ultraviolet Edge Imaging Spectrometer (MUEIS) – for observing the Earth. The spectrum of the WIS covers 18 bands, from visible to thermal infrared, with a swath of 300km. The TIMA is the first-ever system to use interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA) technology to measure sea surface height and land topography at near-nadir angles with a wide swath. In turn, the MUEIS is the world’s first large-field atmospheric detector capable of quasi-synchronously detecting the characteristics of ultraviolet limb radiation in the middle atmosphere. The Earth observation data obtained by Tiangong-2 has attracted many research groups and been applied in such diverse areas as land resources, water resources, climate change, environmental monitoring, agriculture, forestry, ecology, oceanography, meteorology and so on. The main subjects considered in this proceedings volume include: payload design, data processing, data service and application. It also provides a comprehensive introduction to the research results gleaned by engineers, researchers and scientists throughout the lifecycle of the Tiangong-2 Earth observation data, which will improve the payload development and enhance remote sensing data applications.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring - gether researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems, and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2009, held in Ulsan, Korea, September 16-19, 2009, constituted the 5th - ternational Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2008, ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006, and ICIC 2005 held in Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, and Hefei, China, 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005, respectively. This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing. Its aim was to unify the p- ture of contemporary intelligent computing techniques as an integral concept that hi- lights the trends in advanced computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications. Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications.” Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.
