Download or read book Imagined, Negotiated, Remembered written by Kimmo Katajala and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of writings explores European borders from the 15th century to the present. The territorial scope ranges from the Arctic Ocean and Scandinavia to Central Europe. In these papers, borders are understood not only as separating lines in the terrain, but also as socially constructed divisions in people's choices, speeches, actions, and memories. Borders are not only drawn: they are imagined, negotiated, and remembered. (Series: Studies on Middle and Eastern Europe / Mittel- und Ostmitteleuropastudien - Vol. 11)
Book Synopsis Rampart Nations by : Dr. Liliya Berezhnaya
Download or read book Rampart Nations written by Dr. Liliya Berezhnaya and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “bulwark” or antemurale myth—whereby a region is imagined as a defensive barrier against a dangerous Other—has been a persistent strand in the development of Eastern European nationalisms. While historical studies of the topic have typically focused on clashes and overlaps between sociocultural and religious formations, Rampart Nations delves deeper to uncover the mutual transfers and multi-sided national and interconfessional conflicts that helped to spread bulwark myths through Europe’s eastern periphery over several centuries. Ranging from art history to theology to political science, this volume offers new ways of understanding the political, social, and religious forces that continue to shape identity in Eastern Europe.
Book Synopsis Medieval East Central Europe in a Comparative Perspective by : Gerhard Jaritz
Download or read book Medieval East Central Europe in a Comparative Perspective written by Gerhard Jaritz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval East Central Europe in a Comparative Perspective draws together the new perspectives concerning the relevance of East Central Europe for current historiography by placing the region in various comparative contexts. The chapters compare conditions within East Central Europe, as well as between East Central Europe, the rest of the continent, and beyond. Including 15 original chapters from an interdisciplinary team of contributors, this collection begins by posing the question: "What is East Central Europe?" with three specialists offering different interpretations and presenting new conclusions. The book is then grouped into five parts which examine political practice, religion, urban experience, and art and literature. The contributors question and explain the reasons for similarities and differences in governance and strategies for handling allies, enemies or subjects in particular ways. They point out themes and structures from town planning to religious orders that did not function according to political boundaries, and for which the inclusion of East Central European territories was systemic. The volume offers a new interpretation of medieval East Central Europe, beyond its traditional limits in space and time and beyond the established conceptual schemes. It will be essential reading for students and scholars of medieval East Central Europe.

Book Synopsis Central Europe in the High Middle Ages by : Nora Berend
Download or read book Central Europe in the High Middle Ages written by Nora Berend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking comparative history of the early centuries of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland sets the development of each polity in the context of the central European region as a whole. Focusing on the origins of the realms and their development in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the book concludes with the thirteenth century when significant changes in social and economic structures occurred. The book presents a series of thematic chapters on every aspect of the early history of the region covering political, religious, economic, social and cultural developments, including an investigation of origin myths that questions traditional national narratives. It also explores the ways in which west European patterns were appropriated and adapted through the local initiatives of rulers, nobles and ecclesiastics in central Europe. An ideal introduction to the essential themes in medieval central European history, the book sheds important new light on regional similarities and differences.
Book Synopsis Domains and Divisions of European History by : Johann P. Arnason
Download or read book Domains and Divisions of European History written by Johann P. Arnason and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patterns of unity and division that define Europe as a historical region have been discussed in many seminal works, but the complex set of questions behind its domains and divisions merits a more sustained debate. The disappearance of the cold war, the enlargement of the European Union, and core issues of historical sociology all require an exploration of the structures and boundaries of historical formations, as well as the question of European unity. This volume tackles the topic of the divisions that have shaped European history head-on, as leading scholars in the field negotiate such issues as regional identity, geographical boundaries, divisional labeling, and post–cold war European unity.
Book Synopsis Transregional Connections in the History of East-Central Europe by : Katja Castryck-Naumann
Download or read book Transregional Connections in the History of East-Central Europe written by Katja Castryck-Naumann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transregional connections play a fundamental role in the history of East-Central Europe. This volume explores this connectivity by showing how people from eastern and central parts of Europe have positioned themselves within global processes while, in turn, also shaping them. The contributions examine different fields of action such as economy, arts, international regulations and law, development aid, and migration, focusing on the period between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the Cold War. The authors uncover spaces of interaction and emphasize that internal and external entanglements have established East-Central Europe as a distinct region. Understanding the connectedness of this subregion is stimulating for the historiography of East-Central Europe as it is for the field of global history.
Book Synopsis Central Europe and the Non-European World in the Long 19th Century by : Markéta Křížová
Download or read book Central Europe and the Non-European World in the Long 19th Century written by Markéta Křížová and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Europe and the Non-European World in the Long 19th Century explores various ways in which inhabitants of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy perceived and depicted the outside world during the era of European imperialism. Focusing particularly on the Czech Lands, Hungary, and Slovakia, with other nations as comparative examples, this collection shows how Central Europeans viewed other regions and their populations, from the Balkans and the Middle East to Africa, China, and America. Although the societies under Habsburg rule found themselves (with rare exceptions) outside the realm of colonialism, their inhabitants also engaged in colonial projects and benefited from these interactions. Rather than taking one “Central European” approach, the volume draws upon accounts not only by writers and travelers, but by painters, missionaries, and other observers, reflecting the diversity that characterized both the region itself and its views of non-Western cultures.
Book Synopsis Germany and the European East in the Twentieth Century by : Eduard Mühle
Download or read book Germany and the European East in the Twentieth Century written by Eduard Mühle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did German society perceive the European East during the short twentieth century? What were the mental maps Germans constructed as their images of the European East? How did these images alter over time due to changing political systems and to what extent did those mental perceptions influence political action and the relationship between Germany and Eastern Europe?Tackling questions such as these, this book looks at the complicated relationship between Germany and the European East. Politically significant, this relationship was often fraught with tension, always delicate and never easy. The book looks at the social, cultural and political contexts that shaped the German image of the East during the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. In addition, it charts the mental maps that German society constructed with respect to single constituent parts of Eastern Europe, such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Baltic States and the Soviet Union. The contributors consider how the relationship was transformed from one of hostility to one more conciliatory in character by the end of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The studies in East and Central European History Writing in Exile 1939-1989, all written by experts in the history of the region, give answers to the comprehensive question of how the experience of exile during the time of the Nazi and Communist totalitarianism influenced and still influences history writing and the historical consciousness both in the countries hosting exile historians, as well as in the home countries which these historians left. The volume comprises difficult-to-access information about the organization and the work of historians exiled from the Baltic States, including Baltic Germans, Belorusia, Ukraine, and Poland. And it provides reflections on the intellectuals networking between their own national and the foreign traditions in the exile. Book Synopsis Fragmentation in East Central Europe by : Klaus Richter
Download or read book Fragmentation in East Central Europe written by Klaus Richter and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War led to a radical reshaping of Europe's political borders. Nowhere was this transformation more profound than in East Central Europe, where the collapse of imperial rule led to the emergence of a series of new states. New borders intersected centuries-old networks of commercial, cultural, and social exchange. The new states had to face the challenges posed by territorial fragmentation and at the same time establish durable state structures within an international order that viewed them as, at best, weak, and at worst, as merely provisional entities that would sooner or later be reintegrated into their larger neighbours' territory. Fragmentation in East Central Europe challenges the traditional view that the emergence of these states was the product of a radical rupture that naturally led from defunct empires to nation states. Using the example of Poland and the Baltic States, it retraces the roots of the interwar states of East Central Europe, of their policies, economic developments, and of their conflicts back to the First World War. At the same time, it shows that these states learned to harness the dynamics caused by territorial fragmentation, thus forever changing our understanding of what modern states can do.
