Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This practical guide presents the most up-to-date information on the application of non-pharmacological and physical therapeutic measures, either used independently or in combination with pharmacotherapy, for the management of osteoporosis. Pharmacotherapy remains the primary treatment for osteoporosis, but to improve the biomechanical competence of bone and improve quality of life, there needs to be more comprehensive management approach involving non-pharmacological methods. The book opens with a discussion of the diagnosis, pathophysiology, complications and consequences of osteoporosis. Exercise, nutrition, orthotics, and other rehabilitation measures such as whole body vibration and electrical muscle stimulation, each described in details in chapters of their own, have had a beneficial impact on fall and fracture prevention as well as recovery post-fracture. In addition, the application of acupuncture for pain management and movement-based mind-body therapies like tai chi and the Feldenkrais method are explored. Providing a description of independent and adjuvant techniques and practices for treatment and improving quality of life, Non-Pharmacological Management of Osteoporosis is an excellent resource for endocrinologists, bone specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and all clinical practitioners and staff working with osteoporosis patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for the management and prevention of osteoporosis, with more than four hundred illustrations. Osteoporosis leads to painful fractures due to loss of bone mass; yoga strengthens bones without endangering joints: it stands to reason that yoga is the perfect therapy for osteoporosis. Forty-four million Americans suffer from low bone mass, and osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. Drugs and surgeries can alleviate pain, but study after study has shown that exercise is the best treatment, specifically low-impact, bone-strengthening exercises—hence, yoga. In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand osteoporosis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Classical yoga poses, as well as physiologically sound adapted poses, are presented with easy-to-follow instructions and photographs. The authors welcome readers of all ages and levels of experience into the healing and strengthening practice of yoga.

Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is one of the most clinically relevant disabling chronic disease encountered in clinical practice. A common cause of osteoporosis is glucocorticoid excess, as glucocorticoids may increase bone resorption, inhibit bone formation, have indirect actions on bone by decreasing intestinal calcium absorption and induce hypercalciuria. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the effects of glucocorticoids on bone metabolism and structure and on the diagnosis and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It aims at providing updated information on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this often dramatic complication of glucocorticoid excess. Being one of the few publications completely devoted to glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis it will heighten the awareness of specialists who prescribe glucocorticoids of the clinical relevance of this treatment complication. 'Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis' is addressed to clinical experts as well as to general practitioners who will both benefit from the comprehensive and integrative view of the management of patients exposed to glucocorticoids.

Book excerpt: Bone is hard tissue that is in a constant state of flux being built up by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts while also being broken down or resorbed by cells known as osteoclasts. During childhood and adolescence bone formation is dominant; bone length and girth increase with age ending at early adulthood when peak bone mass is attained. Males generally exhibit a longer growth period resulting in bones of greater size and overall strength. In males after the age of 20 bone resorbtion becomes predominant and bone mineral content declines about 4% per decade. Females tend to maintain peak mineral content until menopause at which time it declines about 15% per decade. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures especially of the hip spine and wrist. Osteoporosis occurs primarily as a result of normal ageing but can arise as a result of impaired development of peak bone mass (e.g. due to delayed puberty or undernutrition) or excessive bone loss during adulthood (e.g. due to estrogen deficiency in women undernutrition or corticosteriod use). Osteoporosis-induced fractures cause a great burden to society. Hip fractures are the most serious as they nearly always result in hospitalization are fatal about 20% of the time and produce permanent disability about half the time. Fracture rates increase rapidly with age and the lifetime risk of fracture in 50 year-old women is about 40% similar to that for coronary heart disease. In 1990 there were 1.7 million hip fractures alone worldwide; with changes in population demographics this figure is expected to rise to 6 million by 2050. To help describe the nature and consequences of osteoporosis as well as strategies for its prevention and management a WHO Scientific Group meeting of international experts was held in Geneva which resulted in this technical report. This monograph describes in detail normal bone development and the causes and risk factors for developing osteoporosis. The burden of osteoporosis is characterized in terms of mortality morbidity and economic costs. Methods for its prevention and treatment are discussed in detail for both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. For each approach the strength of the scientific evidence is listed. The report also provides cost-analysis information for potential interventions and discusses important aspects of developing national policies to deal with osteoporosis. Recommendations are made to the general population care providers health administrators and researchers. Lastly national organizations and support groups are listed by country.

Book excerpt: The Symposium on "Protein Metabolism: Infiuence of Growth Hormone, Anabolie Steroids, and Nutrition in Health and Disease" is the fourth in the series of International Symposia sponsored by CIBA Limited, Basle. As in the case of the previous conferences, it was planned and organised with the help of experts in the field concerned. Special thanks are due to Prof. A. QuERIDO and Dr. A. A. H. KAssENAAR who, once the idea of the Symposium had been conceived in the course of joint discussions, embarked upon the project with enthusiasm and inspiration, although they must have known full weil what a great deal of time and trouble the organisation of such a meeting would inevitably cost them. For their untiring efforts, for the judicious manner in which they contrived to select precisely those subjects on which interest is chiefiy centred today, and-last but not least-for their success in finding competent specialists to participate in the proceedings, we wish to assure them of our sincere gratitude. To all the members of the Department of Clinical Endocrinology and Diseases of Metabolism, at the University Hospital in Leyden, who helped in preparing the meeting, we would likewise extend a warm vote of thanks. The fact that the present volume, featuring the papers and discussions of the Symposium, has been published only a few months after the event, was made possible thanks to the co operative help of all who participated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LSIT is based on the scientific foundation of quantum physics. This deals with holistic structures and their interactions. The high dynamics of life is achieved by constantly changing relationships and opportunities, combined with a high gain of experience. This improves the adaptability and the chances of survival. Everything is subject to a higher meaning communicated to us about spiritual needs. We are spirit-driven beings who inhabit a body subject to electrodynamic laws. Each action requires information and energy, which we call up about our intentions. Diseases can be treated with medication. These transmit certain healing information. The LSIT uses this information directly, without need of pills. That's what makes them so efficient. It is capable of initiating healing processes even in advanced diseases. The author, Dr Bodo Koehler, MD, born in 1948, has more than 45 years of experience in the clinic and his own practice as an internist with extensive additional training. Since 1980 he has been one of the pioneers of bioenergetic measurement and therapy procedures. A lot of his developments are now standard in many practices. The author is a lecturer at home and abroad.

Book excerpt: Due to the aging population in the Western world, osteoporosis has become a major problem which is of interest to several medical disciplines: not only radiologists but also gynecologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, and orthopedic surgeons are involved in the management of this widespread condition. Functional imaging is becoming rapidly an important area of diagnostic radiology. Imaging of osteoporosis is another application of this recent addition to the armory of radiology. It is important that radiologists should be fully aware of the range of diagnostic modalities-conventional radiologic methods, dual X-ray absorptiometry, quantitative computed tomography, quantitative ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, etc. -that are now available for the diagnosis and the follow-up of osteoporosis, and know how to apply these sophisticated methods in daily clinical practice. Dr. S. Grampp is a radiologist with a longstanding interest in osteoporosis, and his previous publications on this condition are internationally known. He has been very successful in engaging several outstandingly qualified experts to contribute to the indi vidual chapters of this superb book, which provides a omprehensive c overview of our current knowledge of osteoporosis. I am confident that this volume will meet with great interest from radiologists and all other clinicians involved in the care of patients with osteoporosis and will encounter the same success as many previous volumes in this series.
