Hıristiyanlığı yayma gibi bir davaya kendisini adamış kimselerden başkalarının, bu uzak diyarın insanlarına ilgi duymalarının nasıl bir nedeni olabilirdi ki? Dünyalık meşgaleler peşinde koşan insanlardan hiçbiri bu işin ciddî zorluklarına ve tehlikelerine katlanmaz, kifayetsiz ücrete ve misyoner öncülerin yetindiği dar imkânlara kanaat etmezdi. Son üç yüz yıllık dönemde Hıristiyan tebayı, devleti yıkmak için bir kaldıraç gibi kullanmayı Osmanlı’ya yönelik politikaların değişmez yasası kabul eden İngiltere, Fransa ve Rusya bu konuda Amerika’ya örnek olmuşlardır. Amerika bu dönemden itibaren Ortadoğu’da nüfuzunu artırmaya yönelik çareleri aramaya başlamıştır. İlgili dönemde misyonerlik faaliyetleri Amerika’nın söz konusu bölgeye yönelik dış politika hedefleriyle örtüşmekteydi. Amerika’nın, genç Cumhuriyet’i daima Ortadoğu’daki nüfuzu için bir ileri karakol olarak gördüğü anlaşılmaktadır. Geriye dönüp baktığımız zaman misyoner eğitim faaliyetlerinden etkilenerek Hıristiyanlığa dönmüşlerin sayısı dikkat çekecek kadar çok değildir. Öyleyse bu semeresizliğe rağmen Amerikan Hükümeti milyonlarca doları bu topraklara niçin akıtıp durmuş, bu kurumların binlerce personeli aslında bu topraklarda ne yapmışlardır? Elinizdeki eser kısmen bu soruya bir pencere aralamaktadır.

The city was clearly not the seat of treason against the Nationalist struggle for independence, nor was collaboration with the occupiers what it was made out to be in Republican historiography. Above and beyond the international conjuncture in post-WWI Europe, factors that helped the Turkish Nationalists to succeed were: inter-Allied rivalries in the Near East that carried over to Istanbul; the British, French and Italians as major occupation forces, failing to establish a balance of strenght among themselves in their haste to promote respective national interests; the victors underestimating the defeated as they were engrossed with bureaucracy and were assailed by the influx of Russian refugees, Bolshevik propaganda, and the Turkish left.
