Book excerpt: The work of Carlo Crivelli (c.1435-c.1495), one of the most original artists of the Italian Renaissance, is well represented in the art museums of North America. Although much admired by collectors, artists, and designers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, he has until recently been largely written out of the history of early Renaissance art, is little known to the public, and outside of some rare instances in Italy, has never been the focus of a monographic exhibition. The book, accompanying an exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, will reevaluate Crivelli s provincial status, presenting him as an experimental artist who provided an alternative to the influential new models of modern painting associated with Florence. He was an artist who aimed to dazzle through a repertoire of spectacular pictorial effects that combined luxuriant ornamental display with bravura illusionism the latter entailing a sophisticated, witty, and sometimes unsettling play with the limits of frames and fictive space.

Download or read book The Evolution of Architectural Ornament written by G. A. T. Middleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Architectural Ornament Published first as a series of articles in "The Architectural Record" of New York, these notes on the Evolution of Ornament are now presented in volume form, and a few words of apology are consequently necessary; for illustrations which were prepared for a magazine have not in every case been capable of arrangement in a book either sequenquentially or in close proximity to the text which they refer. For most of them, whether photographs or pencil sketches, the author is himself responsible, but for others he has to thank friends, including Messrs. R. G. Lovell, A.R.I.B.A., W. A. Rigg, A.R.I.B.A., M. F. Surveyor, F. Clemes and F. R. Somerford, A.R.I.B.A., while he is also indebted to Mr. Batsford, the publisher of, and Mr. R. H. Carden, A.R.I.B.A., his collaborator in that volume, for permission to reprodace certain illustrations from "Ornamental Details of the Italian Renaissance." If this book contains, of deliberation, any novel features, these consists mainly in its general arrangement, classifying architectural ornament as to its bases, found either in vegetable or animal forms of life, or in straight or curved lines; and in the tracing of Gothic forms almost wholly to nature, those of the thirteenth century representing spring, followed in regular succession by those summer, autumn and winter, alike in England and on the Continent. The appendix chapter on some capitals which the author sketched in Alexandria in 1911 is also, it is believed, quite new, except that a paper on the subject has been read before the Society of Architects. Book Synopsis Italian Renaissance Art by : Laurie Schneider Adams
Download or read book Italian Renaissance Art written by Laurie Schneider Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."
Book Synopsis A New History of Italian Renaissance Art by : Stephen John Campbell
Download or read book A New History of Italian Renaissance Art written by Stephen John Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campbell and Cole, respected teachers and active researchers, draw on traditional and current scholarship to present complex interpretations in this new edition of their engaging account of Italian Renaissance art. The book's unique decade-by-decade structure is easy to follow, and permits the authors to tell the story of art not only in the great centres of Rome, Florence and Venice, but also in a range of other cities and sites throughout Italy, including more in this edition from Naples, Padua and Palermo. This approach allows the artworks to take centre-stage, in contrast to the book's competitors, which are organized by location or by artist. Other updates for this edition include an expanded first chapter on the Trecento, and a new 'Techniques and Materials' appendix that explains and illustrates all of the major art-making processes of the period.Richly illustrated with high-quality reproductions and new photography of recent restorations, it presents the classic canon of Renaissance painting and sculpture in full, while expanding the scope of conventional surveys by offering a more thorough coverage of architecture, decorative and domestic arts, and print media.
