Book excerpt: Origami Charming Kusudama of the Origami Dcor Series by the Oriland creators will show you how to make magic spheres out of paper, called Kusudama, traditional ones and the authors' original designs. Kusudama ('healing sphere' in Japanese) is a decorative paper ball usually made of several modules connected together to form an attractive sphere filled with harmony and beauty. The sphere designs in this book use a common technique for making a kusudama where six modules, each folded from paper in the pure origami style, are glued together to shape a ball. The 6-module kusudama designs possess a certain charm when balancing the folding efforts and the elegance of the result. Some of these designs have a 10-module version in a form of an eye-catching lantern. Do-It-Yourself - fold these charming kusudama models - the Jasmine Sphere, the traditional Kusudama 'Pendant', the Lantern-like Kusudama 'Pendant', the Kusudama 'Roses', the Lantern-like Kusudama 'Roses', the Kusudama 'Star', the Himalayan Poppy Sphere, the Tsuru Tama (or Crane Kusudama), the Lantern-like Tsuru Tama, the Fairy Wings Sphere and the Chinese Dogwood Sphere. Along with kusudama designs, there are also related decorative and floral models - the 2-Module Pendant, the Pendant 'Rose', 4- and 8-Pointed Stars, the Jasmine Flower, the Fairy Wings Flower and the Chinese Dogwood Flower, as well as Stalks and Oval Pointed Leaves for them. 180 detailed step-by-step colorful diagrams with written instructions and 50 photos of examples of completed projects will guide you through folding the 18 origami designs. For every project, there are recommendations on paper type and size including an indication of the size of the completed model. The designs are from simple to intermediate level of folding and are good for the novice and the expert alike. In addition, the authors' article "Magic of Kusudama" introduces the kusudama theme, shedding some light on how they were used in ancient Japan and how kusudama designs keep their charm in the present. A kusudama influences positively the mood of a person who made it or who receives it as a gift or even just looks at it. Kusudama spheres are wonderful decorations able to bring a unique atmosphere into every home. They can be a terrific gift for your friends and family too. Creative, original and beautiful! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite many scholars noting the interdisciplinary approach of Aboriginal knowledge production as a methodology within a broad range of subjects – including quantum mathematics, biodiversity, sociology and the humanities - the academic study of Indigenous knowledge and people is struggling to become interdisciplinary in its approach and move beyond its current label of ‘Indigenous Studies’. Indigenous Knowledge Production specifically demonstrates the use of autobiographical ethnicity as a methodological approach, where the writer draws on lived experience and ethnic background towards creative and academic writing. Indeed, in this insightful volume, Marcus Woolombi Waters investigates the historical connection and continuity that have led to the present state of hostility witnessed in race relations around the world; seeking to further one’s understanding of the motives and methods that have led to a rise in white supremacy associated with ultra-conservatism. Above all, Indigenous Knowledge Production aims to deconstruct the cultural lens applied within the West which denies the true reflection of Aboriginal and Black consciousness, and leads to the open hostility witnessed across the world. This monograph will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, interested in fields such as Sociology of Knowledge, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Ethnography and Methodology.

Book excerpt: Origami itself was usually being used for praying and blessing, but it gradually develops into different styles in our life. From living to science, origami artists and scientists have led it to another level, which enables it to communicate with people across cultures and countries. Somehow origami has become part of our life.Origami has accompanied me since my childhood. I broadened my mind and made amazing friends with origami. It encourages me to explore possibilities that I never experienced. After years, I started establishing my own style of origami, turning abstract thoughts into papers with a shape. This is a compilation of all my works from 2014-2017, focusing mainly on the animals and fantasies. Some models are my own version of others' classics, some of them are symbols of my country. Origami is now a language across ages and cultures, which groups us together. Here, I share my passion with you and hope you join us and have fun in the lovely world of "paper creatures".This year is the second year of Origami Association of Taiwan. We hold exhibitions on the street and in the museums. We enjoy every moment and priceless memories with each other and with origami. In the end of the book, we will also share those memories with you.

Book excerpt: From the earliest days of the cinema to the present, Shakespeare has offered a tempting bank of source material than the film industry has been happy to plunder. Shakespeare on Film deftly examines an extensive range of films that have emerged from the curious union of an iconic dramatist with a medium of mass appeal. The many films Buchanan studies are shown to be telling indicators of trends in Shakespearean performance interpretation, illuminating markers of developments in the film industry and culturally revealing about broader influences in the world beyond the movie theatre. As with other titles from the Inside Film series, the book is illustrated throughout with stills. Each chapter concludes with a list of suggested further reading in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, drama by Pacific Island playwrights has flourished throughout Oceania. Although many Pacific Island cultures have a broad range of highly developed indigenous performance forms—including oral narrative, clowning, ritual, dance, and song—scripted drama is a relatively recent phenomenon. Emerging during a period of region-wide decolonization and indigenous self-determination movements, most of these plays reassert Pacific cultural perspectives and performance techniques in ways that employ, adapt, and challenge the conventions and representations of Western theater. Drawing together discussions in theater and performance studies, historiography, Pacific studies, and postcolonial studies, Remaking Pacific Pasts offers the first full-length comparative study of this dynamic and expanding body of work. It introduces readers to the field with an overview of significant works produced throughout the region over the past fifty years, including plays in English and in French, as well as in local vernaculars and lingua francas. The discussion traces the circumstances that have given rise to a particular modern dramatic tradition in each site and also charts routes of theatrical circulation and shared artistic influences that have woven connections beyond national borders. This broad survey contextualizes the more detailed case studies that follow, which focus on how Pacific dramatists, actors, and directors have used theatrical performance to critically engage the Pacific’s colonial and postcolonial histories. Chapters provide close readings of selected plays from Hawai‘i, Aotearoa/New Zealand, New Caledonia/Kanaky, and Fiji that treat events, figures, and legacies of the region’s turbulent past: Captain Cook’s encounters, the New Zealand Wars, missionary contact, the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, and the Fiji coups. The book explores how, in their remembering and retelling of these pasts, theater artists have interrogated and revised repressive and marginalizing models of historical understanding developed through Western colonialism or exclusionary indigenous nationalisms, and have opened up new spaces for alternative historical narratives and ways of knowing. In so doing, these works address key issues of identity, genealogy, representation, political parity, and social unity, encouraging their audiences to consider new possibilities for present and future action. This study emphasizes the contribution of artistic production to social and political life in the contemporary Pacific, demonstrating how local play production has worked to facilitate processes of creative nation building and the construction of modern regional imaginaries. Remaking Pacific Pasts makes valuable contributions to Pacific literature, world theater history, Pacific studies, and postcolonial studies. The book opens up to comparative critical discussion a geopolitical region that has received little attention from theater and performance scholars, extending our understanding of the form and function of theater in different cultural contexts. It enriches existing discussions in postcolonial studies about the decolonizing potential of literary and artistic endeavors, and it suggests how theater might function as a mode of historical enquiry and debate, adding to discussions about ways in which Pacific histories might be developed, challenged, or recalibrated. Consequently, the book stimulates new discussions in Pacific studies where theater has, to date, suffered from a lack of critical exposure. Carefully researched and original in its approach, Remaking Pacific Pasts will appeal to scholars, graduate students, and upper-level undergraduate students in theater and performance studies and Pacific Islands studies; it will also be of interest to cultural historians and to specialists in cultural studies and postcolonial studies.
