Book excerpt: The 1995 to present eruption of Soufrière Hills Volcano on Montserrat is one of the most important and best-studied eruptions of an explosive andesitic volcano. This volume presents scientific findings from the period between 2000 and 2010; it follows on from Memoir 21, which focused on the early years of activity between 1995 and 1999. In addition to descriptions and analysis of the growth, collapse and explosions associated with lava domes, there are papers on the deformation of the volcano caused by the deep magma, the petrology and geochemistry of the lavas and associated gases. Of particular note are: an overview of the insights into the deep structure of the volcano that resulted from a major international seismic tomography experiment; and an analysis of the quantitative risk assessment process that has run now for most of the eruption, the longest such continuous assessment in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights major problems in the statistical analysis of compositions that have been known for over a century, as well as the corresponding solutions that have been put forward by specialists over the past 30 years. The basic assumptions of normality or multi-normality are pointed out and methods to test and achieve them are also covered. The conventional major and trace element geochemistry and modeling equations are discussed, and are followed by a more sophisticated multidimensional approach to data handling. The book’s main focus is on the use of statistical techniques to facilitate data interpretation. It also highlights the classification (or nomenclature) and tectonic discrimination aspects for both igneous and sedimentary rocks. The book concludes by discussing computer programs that are helping pave the way from geochemistry to geochemometrics. Written by a leading expert in the area of geochemistry, it offers a valuable guide for students and professionals in the area.

In the decade and a half since the previous edition was published new studies have refined assessments of the ages of many volcanoes, and several thousand new eruptions have been documented. This edition updates the book’s key components: a directory of volcanoes active during the Holocene; a chronology of eruptions over the past ten thousand years; a gazetteer of volcano names, synonyms, and subsidiary features; an extensive list of references; and an introduction placing these data in context. This edition also includes new photographs, data on the most common rock types forming each volcano, information on population densities near volcanoes, and other features, making it the most comprehensive source available on Earth’s dynamic volcanism.

Book excerpt: Don Swanson, who received the GSA Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division's Distinguished Geologic Career award in 2016, has adopted a detailed, field-oriented approach to studying problems of great volcanologic importance across a range of compositions and spatio-temporal scales. Swanson's work has resulted in a series of fundamental contributions that have advanced understanding of the Columbia River flood basalts, Cascade volcanic arc, and Hawai'i, and his insights have been applied not only around the world, but across the solar system. This volume emphasizes the role of field volcanology as a window into better understanding volcanic processes past and present, and highlights, in particular, those places and processes where Swanson's insights have been particularly impactful.

This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic eruptions are complex and inherently uncertain, making the management of a potentially explosive eruption on a small island with limited resources extremely difficult. This volume presents scientific findings from the 2020–21 eruption of La Soufrière Volcano, on the island of St Vincent in the Eastern Caribbean. This involved three months of effusive activity that escalated rapidly to 13 days of explosive activity, beginning with an intense two days of near-continuous ash venting and explosions. The book contains an introduction and 17 papers, split into two parts: the first presents geological and volcanological advances, whereas the second documents and analyses the impacts of the eruption and the challenges presented for the management of the volcanic crisis. This volume represents both significant contributions to the knowledge of the Soufrière eruptive system and important insights into the ways and means by which volcanic eruptions of this type impact on populations at risk. It also provides detailed insights into the most effective communication processes through this type of crisis.

Book excerpt: This publication summarizes the studies carried out at two of the most active volcanoes of Chiapas (Mexico): El Chichón and Tacaná. El Chichón erupted explosively in 1982 killing more than 2000 people being the worst volcanic disaster in Mexico, and Tacaná produced two mild phreatic explosions in 1950 and 1986. Only after these explosions a surge of new studies began to unreveal their volcanic history and impact. This book presents the state of the art advances in topics related to the geologic setting of the two volcanoes, their eruptive history and composition of erupted products, the hydrothermal systems and their manifestations. Volcanic hazards and risks and possible mitigation plans are discussed based on the experience of the catastrophic eruption of El Chichón that occurred in 1982. The book will also include previously unpublished material on the flora and the fauna of the region and archaeological and social aspects of the area that is inhabited by indigenous people.
