Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years the world has relied on electronics for information processing. However, we are nearing the limits of traditional electronic signal processing and transmission. Optical technology will be required in order to gain processing rates above 50 GHz and a transmission distance greater than 1 meter. The optical technology is described as photonics, which is the analog of electronics. This means that photons, rather than electrons, will be used to acquire, store, transmit and process information. Many photonic applications are already in use. These include fiber-optic communication lines, diode laser sources, organic liquid-crystal displays and optical memories There are many advantages of photonics over electronics. Optical switching, for example, occurs on a femtosecond time scale. No electronic process can come close to matching that time, but optical processes can. And with optical signals, there is no electrical and magnetic interference, so there is less crosstalk between channels.

Book excerpt: The magnitude and stability of the induced dipolar orientation of a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore doped in an amorphous polymeric matrix is investigated. The chromophores are aligned using electric field poling. The linear electro-optic (EO) Pockels effect and Second Harmonic generation (SHG) techniques are used to probe the electric field induced alignment. Both the Pockels coefficient and the second order susceptibility show a nonlinear relationship with the NLO chromophore concentration. Using a relationship based on the two level model, the Pockels coefficient is compared with the second order nonlinear susceptibility measured by SHG. The temperature dependence of the decay time constant of the SHG signal is found to follow an empirical relationship such as the Vogel-Tammen-Fulcher (VFT) equation. The decay time constant of the SHG signal is also found to be increasing with increasing chromophore concentration. This concentration dependence is interpreted as due to orientational pair correlation between chromophores, and between chromophores and polymer chains.

Book excerpt: The dispersion of third-order nonlinear coefficients chi-3 1133 and chi-3 3333 of three different NLO(nonlinear optical) polymer films were determined by electroabsorption spectroscopy. The first material investigated is an epoxy-based polymer BP-2A-NT, with azobenzene NLO chromophore 4-((4- NITROPHENYL)(AZO)PHENYL)AZO)aniline in its side chain. The other materials are two polydiacetylenes, poly(BPOD) and poly(4-BCMU), in which the delocalized polymer chains contribute to the third-order nonlinearity. The complex spectrum of chi-3 3333 of each material is very similar in shape to corresponding chi-3 1133 spectrum. The ratio of chi-3 3333 to chi-3 1133 is 3.2 for BP-2A-NT, 1.5 for both poly(BPOD) and poly(4- BCMU). These ratios indicate that the distribution of the side-chain NLO chromophores of BP-2A-NT is very close to three-dimensional isotropy, and the distribution of the main-chain chromophores of poly (BPOD) and poly (4-BCMU) is concentrated on the film lane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much current interest in polymer materials for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. These materials are commonly prepared by either dissolving (doping) a suitable NLO chromophore into a glassy or liquid crystalline polymer, or by covalently attaching the chromophore to the polymer host either by direct synthesis or radiative crosslinking. Regardless of the method of preparation, macroscopic orientation of the chromophore must be induced and maintained for efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) in frequency doubling applications. For the most common use of a glassy polymer host, chromophore orientation is achieved by the process of poling. Briefly, the material is heated above Tg, a strong electric field is applied to orient the chromophores, and the material is cooled below Tg to lock in the orientation before the field is removed. A major problem in polymeric NLO materials is loss of SHG properties over time. For example, in a study of 4-(dimethylamino)-4'-nitrostilbene in PMMA, Hampsch and coworkers reported that up to 80% of the SHG efficiency was lost after 12 h at 298 K.

Book excerpt: The relaxation of poled nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores in polymer films was characterized by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. Both a guest-host system and a photocrosslinkable polymer system were investigated. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) doped with either 2-methyl-4- nitroaniline (MNA) or 4(4'-nitrophenylazo) phenylamine (DO3) was studied. The photocrosslinkable polymer system, polyvinylcinnamate (PVCN) doped with 3- cinnamoyloxy-4-4-(N, N-diethylamino)-2-cinnamoyloxy phenyl azo nitrobenzene (CNNB-R) was also investigated. Doped NLO active molecules were aligned using the corona poling technique. Infrared spectra as a function of time were used to monitor the relaxation behavior of the oriented dyes after poling. Relaxation of NLO molecules was followed at various characteristic vibrational frequencies. The relaxation of MNA was found to be faster than that of DO3. The NLO dye molecule, CNNB-R was covalently bonded to the host polymer and formed a three dimensional crosslinked network after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Relaxation of NLO molecules in pristine and UV treated samples were compared. UV light induced crosslinking provided better temporal stability of molecular alignment in this system ... Book excerpt: We are examining a variety of novel high temperature stable polymers as new materials for second order nonlinear optical (NLO) and photorefractive devices. Current polymers have sufficient optical signal generated by available chromophores, but are not practical for device applications because of limitations in the temporal stability of the dopant orientation in the polymer caused by poor thermal stability of the host. This is a novel approach for developing a new class of photonic materials with superior thermal and temporal stability and is the first attempt to design a second order NLO polymer with controllable, tailorable local physical and electrical properties. A second, equally important goal is to understand the basic polymer physics controlling the thermal and temporal stability of the optical chromophore orientation. This will determine not only the overall efficiency of the materials for device applications, but will generate substantial information about mobility in high temperature stable polymer systems.

Book excerpt: One-pot post-polymerization modification reactions such as azo-coupling and tricyanovinylation reactions were employed to synthesize a series of polymers containing different nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophoric as well as ionic functionalities. We have extended and established the versatility of our earlier reported post-modification strategy to incorporate various heteroaromatic chromophores as well as ionic functionalities in the polymers, at the final stage of synthesis. The correlation between different heteroaromatic chromophore structures and the NLO properties of the polymers was extensively studied, Polymers containing heteroaromatic chromophores exhibit improved temporal stability and enhanced NLO activity. Polymers with ionic chromophores were employed to fabricate NLO active ultra-thin films using electrostatic self-assembling (ESA) technique. Attempts were also made to synthesize second order NLO active polydiacetylene derivatives using post azo-coupling reaction.
