Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most up-to-date integrated spectroscopy text available, Organic Structure Analysis, Second Edition, is the only text that teaches students how to solve structures as they are solved in actual practice. Ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in organic structure analysis, organic structure identification, and organic spectroscopy, it emphasizes real applications--integrating theory as needed--and introduces students to the latest spectroscopic methods. FEATURES * Focus on Structure: Opens with structural elements and then considers the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of spectroscopic methods. Includes coverage of the steps used in determining a molecular structure, the limitations to organic structure determination by spectroscopic methods, and an "Organic Structure Analyses Gone Bad" table (all unique to this text) * Practical Organization: Presents the most commonly used methods first, beginning with an overview of strategies, followed by the use of NMR, and then moving on to mass spectrometry, infrared, and ultraviolet * Innovative Real-World Problem-Solving Approach: Follows the actual information flow used by chemists to solve molecular structures, as opposed to the standard methods-based approach of other texts * Unique Chapter (12) Featuring 51 Structure-Solving Problems: Each problem emphasizes a different method; the problems increase in difficulty throughout the chapter, successively building on students' knowledge and requiring them to integrate multiple methods to identify molecules. NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION * Coverage of the Latest Instrumental and Computational Advances: Examines the use of modern instruments, data processing, and computer-assisted structure elucidation techniques * Updated and Expanded Treatment of NMR (Chapters 2-5): An extensively revised Chapter 5 discusses multi-pulse 1D and 2D NMR methods, 1D TOCSY and 1D NOESY sequences, and using NOESY and ROESY in determining relative stereochemistry and solution conformation. * Additional Coverage of Mass Spectrometry: A new chapter (7) expands the discussion of mass spectrometry to three chapters (6-8). Topics include cutting-edge MS instrumentation and new information on tandem MS techniques, combining NMR with MS, large-molecule MS, chemo-informatics, and more. * More Exercises and Improved Spectra: The second edition includes 25% more problems than the previous edition (279 total). In addition, many of the spectra, including all of those presented in Chapters 11 and 12, have been reprocessed or reacquired for greater clarity.

Book excerpt: Organic Spectroscopy is a standard chemistry course offered each year to large numbers of seniors and beginning graduate students. They learn to efficiently solve problems of molecular structure determination by an integrated use of four primary spectroscopic methods; NMR; mass spectrometry; infrared and ultraviolet. The problem solving approach used in the second edition follows the actual information flow used by practitioners solving molecular strustures and not the standard methods-based aooroach used in other texts. In the ten years since the last edition published there have been significant changes in spectroscopic instrumentation and these are reflected throughout this text. New sections have been included where the first edition omitted coverage, and all chapters are updated with the most recent developments in the field. Major changes have been made in the pivotal chapters covering multipulse 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance methods and the chapters covering mass spectrometric methods have been split from two into three to increase content on modern MS methodology. As examples in NMR, selective pulses and their uses, 15N 2D methods and computer assisted structure elucidation has been included and there is now a section on NOESY and ROESY. For MS the three chapters cover: core techniques and ionization processes; small and large molecule analysis and fragmentation processes. A hallmark of this text is the focus on chemical structure and the text revolves around how relevant information regarding skeleton, functional groups and stereochemistry can be derived and the benefits/disadvantages of particular approaches. The straightforward writing style and use of illustrative examples, clearly reproduced spectra and a large number of problems make this text more accessible than ever.

Book excerpt: Although numerical data are, in principle, universal, the compilations presented in this book are extensively annotated and interleaved with text. This translation of the second German edition has been prepared to facilitate the use of this work, with all its valuable detail, by the large community of English-speaking scientists. Translation has also provided an opportunity to correct and revise the text, and to update the nomenclature. Fortunately, spectroscopic data and their relationship with structure do not change much with time so one can predict that this book will, for a long period of time, continue to be very useful to organic chemists involved in the identification of organic compounds or the elucidation of their structure. Klaus Biemann Cambridge, MA, April 1983 Preface to the First German Edition Making use of the information provided by various spectroscopic tech niques has become a matter of routine for the analytically oriented organic chemist. Those who have graduated recently received extensive training in these techniques as part of the curriculum while their older colleagues learned to use these methods by necessity. One can, therefore, assume that chemists are well versed in the proper choice of the methods suitable for the solution of a particular problem and to translate the experimental data into structural information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The derivation of structural information from spectroscopic data is now an integral part of organic chemistry courses at all Universities. A critical part of any such course is a suitable set of problems to develop the student’s understanding of how structures are determined from spectra. Organic Structures from Spectra, Fifth Edition is a carefully chosen set of more than 280 structural problems employing the major modern spectroscopic techniques, a selection of 27 problems using 2D-NMR spectroscopy, more than 20 problems specifically dealing with the interpretation of spin-spin coupling in proton NMR spectra and 8 problems based on the quantitative analysis of mixtures using proton and carbon NMR spectroscopy. All of the problems are graded to develop and consolidate the student’s understanding of organic spectroscopy. The accompanying text is descriptive and only explains the underlying theory at a level which is sufficient to tackle the problems. The text includes condensed tables of characteristic spectral properties covering the frequently encountered functional groups. The examples themselves have been selected to include all important common structural features found in organic compounds and to emphasise connectivity arguments. Many of the compounds were synthesised specifically for this purpose. There are many more easy problems, to build confidence and demonstrate basic principles, than in other collections. The fifth edition of this popular textbook: • includes more than 250 new spectra and more than 25 completely new problems; • now incorporates an expanded suite of new problems dealing with the analysis of 2D NMR spectra (COSY, C H Correlation spectroscopy, HMBC, NOESY and TOCSY); • has been expanded and updated to reflect the new developments in NMR and to retire older techniques that are no longer in common use; • provides a set of problems dealing specifically with the quantitative analysis of mixtures using NMR spectroscopy; • features proton NMR spectra obtained at 200, 400 and 600 MHz and 13C NMR spectra include DEPT experiments as well as proton-coupled experiments; • contains 6 problems in the style of the experimental section of a research paper and two examples of fully worked solutions. Organic Structures from Spectra, Fifth Edition will prove invaluable for students of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biochemistry taking a first course in Organic Chemistry. Contents Preface Introduction Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Infrared Spectroscopy Mass Spectrometry Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy 2DNMR Problems Index Reviews from earlier editions “Your book is becoming one of the “go to” books for teaching structure determination here in the States. Great work!” “…I would definitely state that this book is the most useful aid to basic organic spectroscopy teaching in existence and I would strongly recommend every instructor in this area to use it either as a source of examples or as a class textbook”. Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry “Over the past year I have trained many students using problems in your book - they initially find it as a task. But after doing 3-4 problems with all their brains activities... working out the rest of the problems become a mania. They get addicted to the problem solving and every time they solve a problem by themselves, their confident level also increases.” “I am teaching the fundamentals of Molecular Spectroscopy and your books represent excellent sources of spectroscopic problems for students.”

Book excerpt: "The second edition of this book comes with a number of new figures, passages, and problems. Increasing the number of figures from 290 to 448 has necessarily added considerable length, weight, and, expense. It is my hope that the book has not lost any of its readability and accessibility. I firmly believe that most of the concepts needed to learn organic structure determination using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy do not require an extensive mathematical background. It is my hope that the manner in which the material contained in this book is presented both reflects and validates this belief"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of Organic Structures by Physical Methods, Volume 1 focuses on the processes, methodologies, principles, and approaches involved in the determination of organic structures by physical methods, including infrared light absorption, thermodynamic properties, Raman spectra, and kinetics. The selection first elaborates on the phase properties of small molecules, equilibrium and dynamic properties of large molecules, and optical rotation. Discussions focus on simple acyclic compounds, carbohydrates, steroids, diffusion, viscosity, osmotic pressure, sedimentation velocity, melting and boiling points, and molar volume. The book then examines ultraviolet and visible light absorption, infrared light absorption, Raman spectra, and the theory of magnetic susceptibility. Concerns cover applications to the study of organic compounds, applications to the determination of structure, determination of thermodynamic properties, and experimental methods and evaluation of data. The text ponders on wave-mechanical theory, reaction kinetics, and dissociation constants, including dissociation of molecular addition compounds, principles of reaction kinetics, and valence-bond treatment of aromatic systems. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in the determination of organic structures by physical methods.

Book excerpt: Problem solving is central to the teaching and learning of chemistry at secondary, tertiary and post-tertiary levels of education, opening to students and professional chemists alike a whole new world for analysing data, looking for patterns and making deductions. As an important higher-order thinking skill, problem solving also constitutes a major research field in science education. Relevant education research is an ongoing process, with recent developments occurring not only in the area of quantitative/computational problems, but also in qualitative problem solving. The following situations are considered, some general, others with a focus on specific areas of chemistry: quantitative problems, qualitative reasoning, metacognition and resource activation, deconstructing the problem-solving process, an overview of the working memory hypothesis, reasoning with the electron-pushing formalism, scaffolding organic synthesis skills, spectroscopy for structural characterization in organic chemistry, enzyme kinetics, problem solving in the academic chemistry laboratory, chemistry problem-solving in context, team-based/active learning, technology for molecular representations, IR spectra simulation, and computational quantum chemistry tools. The book concludes with methodological and epistemological issues in problem solving research and other perspectives in problem solving in chemistry. With a foreword by George Bodner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The derivation of structural information from spectroscopic data is now an integral part of organic chemistry courses at all Universities. Over recent years, a number of powerful two-dimensional NMR techniques (e.g. HSQC, HMBC, TOCSY, COSY and NOESY) have been developed and these have vastly expanded the amount of structural information that can be obtained by NMR spectroscopy. Improvements in NMR instrumentation now mean that 2D NMR spectra are routinely (and sometimes automatically) acquired during the identification and characterisation of organic compounds. Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra is a carefully chosen set of more than 60 structural problems employing 2D-NMR spectroscopy. The problems are graded to develop and consolidate a student’s understanding of 2D NMR spectroscopy. There are many easy problems at the beginning of the collection, to build confidence and demonstrate the basic principles from which structural information can be extracted using 2D NMR. The accompanying text is very descriptive and focussed on explaining the underlying theory at the most appropriate level to sufficiently tackle the problems. Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra Is a graded series of about 60 problems in 2D NMR spectroscopy that assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry and a basic knowledge of one-dimensional NMR spectroscopy Incorporates the basic theory behind 2D NMR and those common 2D NMR experiments that have proved most useful in solving structural problems in organic chemistry Focuses on the most common 2D NMR techniques – including COSY, NOESY, HMBC, TOCSY, CH-Correlation and multiplicity-edited C-H Correlation. Incorporates several examples containing the heteronuclei 31P, 15N and 19F Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra is a logical follow-on from the highly successful “Organic Structures from Spectra” which is now in its fifth edition. The book will be invaluable for students of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry and those taking courses in Organic Chemistry.
