Book excerpt: Report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. Highlights: Organic farming is still considered by the Polish government as one of the best options for the survival of samll farms, as long as subsidies remain available. Although the number and area of organic farms in Poland almost doubled between 2004 and 2005, organic production remains marginal compared to traditional agriculture. While Poland will follow the path of other EU members and strongly promote organic farming, Polish officials understand that it will always remain a very small part of Polish agriculture.

Book excerpt: Despite the continuous increase in the number of organic farms and in the areas in which organic methods are used, organic farming remains a niche sector, not only in Poland but also in other European countries. Nevertheless, a form of organic farming can still be attractive for part of farmers, particularly in view of the continuing financial support for this sector. This paper presents the state of organic farming in Poland and the production and economic conditions of agricultural production using the example of major agricultural production activities in organic farms. The results based on Agricultural Products Data Collection System AGROKOSZTY shows that the organic agricultural production is profitable and economically justified. In comparison with conventional production the low level of direct costs in organic production leads very often to higher level of gross margin from particular agricultural activities. The combination of low level of total costs and financial support for organic production gives organic farmers the higher level of income from each studied activity. The production capacity is limited but the production results seems to be not that important in organic farming than the balance between economic results, social conditions and environmental requirements.

Many of the farming methods used in the past are still useful today. Organic farming takes the best of these and combines them with modern scientific knowledge. The goal was to write a book where as many different existing studies as possible could be presented in a single volume, making it easy for the reader to compare methods, results and conclusions. As a result, studies from countries such as Romania, Poland, The Czech Republic, Mexico, Slovenia, Finland, etc. have been compiled into one book. The opportunity to compare results and conclusions from different countries and continents will create a new perspective in organic farming and food production as well as help researchers and students from all over the world to attain new and interesting results in this field.

Book excerpt: Apart from food and raw materials, agriculture can also provide ancillary benefits such as landscapes, biodiversity, cultural heritage and thriving rural communities. This book offers a state-of-the-art overview of strategies for sustainable management practices and their implementation through the adoption of suitable instruments. Such practices aim to sustain and support the multiple functions provided by agriculture and natural resources in the rural countryside. The authors explore the value of alternative governance structures and examine the design of policy models and institutional mechanisms for a range of different countries and agricultural methods. The empirical results allow them to identify successful examples as well as recognize practices which have failed. They can then transfer positive policies to geographical areas or production systems where effective and efficient strategies for the sustainable management of natural resources are urgently needed. In doing so, the authors hope to improve the design, identification and implementation of appropriate policy instruments to help sustain the rural economy in the future. They also aim to strengthen the establishment of markets for nature which overcome institutional constraints. This timely new book explores emerging perspectives on multifunctionality in agriculture and the rural environment. It will be widely read by academics, researchers and policymakers with an interest in agricultural and resource economics, environmental governance and sustainable development.

Book excerpt: With global revenue surpassing twenty-five billion dollars annually, organic agriculture is a highly visible and rapidly growing component of agricultural production. In Organic Agriculture: A Global Perspective, Paul Kristiansen, Acram Taji, and John Reganold, and their international group of contributors scientifically review key aspects of organic agriculture. At the intersection of research, education, and practice, the contributors look at the organic agricultural movement’s successes and limitations. The first half of this book critically evaluates the agricultural production of both plants and livestock in organic farming systems. All major aspects of organic agriculture are explored, including historical background and underlying principles, soil-fertility management, crop and animal production, breeding strategies, and crop protection. This global and comprehensive overview also addresses the economic, social, and political aspects of organic farming. These include economics and marketing; standards and certification; environmental impacts and social responsibility; and research, education, and extension. The book is a unique and timely science-based international work documenting current practices in organic agriculture and evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. For more than two decades, research into organic methods by mainstream scientists has generated a large body of information that can now be integrated and used for assessing the actual impacts of organic farming in a wide range of disciplines. The knowledge of selected international experts has been combined in one volume, providing a comprehensive review of organic farming globally. Researchers, teachers, extensionists, students, primary producers and others around the world who are interested in sustainable agriculture will find this book to be a valuable and reliable resource.
