Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concise but comprehensive text for review and self evaluation in the study of the microscopic anatomy of the major organ systems of the body. It aims to meet the requirements of students of Medicine, Dentistry, Histopathology, Mammalian Biology and the Paramedical Sciences. The subjects have been chosen to complement a program of physiology and dissection or prosection. Basic concepts of cell and tissue biology are presently considered in separate prerequisite units integrated with biochemistry and genetics and are not included in this text. The approach has been to focus on unique features or diagnostic differences between cells, their function and organisation into organs rather than on pure morphologic description. Developmental aspects of certain organs have been described where these contribute to understanding functional relationships between cells in organ systems. A uniform text structure (point form) helps the reader to organise, review and retain pertinent information. A summary procedes each chapter which helps to focus on key concepts. Each topic is also prefaced by a list of objectives which serve as a guide for review. In addition, a list of key words (bold in the text), phrases and concepts that should be defined as a result of reading the text. The terminology follows that in contemporary use giving alternative names according to Nomina Histological where possible. A series of plates illustrates in line drawings the major features of cells in organs based on electron micrographs. In addition, tables show functional relationships between cells or their products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text serves to introduce students to histology. It provides a thorough and current treatment of the structure, organization and function of the basic tissue types of the body as well as the organ systems which are organized from the basic tissues. The text presents a more modern, cell biological emphasis on the subject, while also bringing out the clinical correlations of histology in every chapter. Text material is frequently summarized in the many charts, tables and diagrams that are distributed throughout the book. The organization is intended to facilitate the rapid transfer of information from the book to the student. The book is written for medical and dental students as well as other professionals who are introduced to histology during their first year of professional schooling. It is also intended to serve the needs of advanced undergraduates who often take such a course in preparation for professional schools. The book contains limited amounts of biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology and neurobiology, but a sufficient amount of material so that the student can correlate functional information to the microscopic organization of tissues and organs. Hopefully, this mix will permit maximum learning and understanding of structure-function relationships. Since the students who first encounters histology is typically introduced to a large body of information in a limited time period, we have sought to maximize the rapid transfer of information by the extensive use of summary type tables, charts and drawings. In addition, a central portion of the book contains a limited number of color illustrations which will permit the student to view and recognize stained sections of tissues and organs. The color atlas should facilitate the student's view of laboratory work.

While the printed book provides a handy, consistentlystructured outline for your review of key issues in thestudy of human histology, the CD-ROM is an inter-active, annotated digital color atlas of micrographs. Features new to this edition include: Over 1,200 light and electron microscopic images (almost 500 more images than in the first edition) that can be superimposed with labels and descriptive legends New electron micrographs with diagrammatic overlays highlighting structural features New sections on mitosis and meiosis, which contain stage-by-stage diagrams detailing structural events A side-by-side diagrammatic comparison of thestages of mitosis and meiosis Expanded coverage of supporting cells in nervous tissue; gametogenesis in the male and female reproductive systems; and hemopoiesis The CD-ROM provides interactive learning on both Mac and PC platforms. In addition to its hundreds of new images, this new edition features a navigational tool that tracks current locations within the contents, as well as allowing linear and nonlinear access to any screen. It also features randomized viewing of images, especially helpful to use alongside the self-quizzes. Digital Histology is an indispensable learning tool for students and teachers in medicine, histology, human biology, anatomy and physiology, and pathology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of cells, tissues, and organs. It has often been taught as a matter of memorization. Dr. Van Lommel's approach is based on the understanding that the microscopic structure of the body has a logic, and the text and accompanying images are organized to proceed according to a rigorous logic, expanding from the anatomy and morphology to discuss the functions of the various kinds of cells, tissues, and organs. The material is thus more interesting and, as an extension of that, easier to remember. CD-ROM included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology was an important step in updating the histology texts available to practicing pathologists and pathology trainees who perform fetal autopsy and/or participate in research involving fetal tissues. It was a well-received volume that filled a major gap in pathology references related to normal histology and provided a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of fetal and neonatal histology. While the basics of fetal histology have changed little in the intervening years since publication of the first edition, this successor edition provides new insights and a fresh perspective. This book contains six new chapters including: blood vessels and lymphatics, external genitalia, eye, ear, skin, and maceration changes. Many existing chapters have also been expanded to address a greater breadth of fetal and neonatal histology such as postnatal testis development and the cardiac conduction system. The “Special Considerations” sections were also expanded in many chapters to address particularly problematic issues within individual organ systems. The book reviews the histology of the major organ systems in the fetus and neonate and provides detailed images, up-to-date references, and practical guidelines for identifying tissues across all gestational ages of development. The second edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology serves as the ultimate go-to resource for pathologists and researchers dealing with, and interested in, fetal and neonatal histology. It provides a comprehensive summary of the current status of the field with excellent and extensive illustrative examples that help guide the clinical study of fetal and neonatal histology and stimulate investigative efforts with fetal tissue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of Comparative Vertebrate Histology looks at the histology of a wide range of vertebrates, representative of all the major classes and families, with examples ranging from amphioxus to primates. The authors focus their microscope on commonly seen vertebrates as well as ‘non-standard’ species, such as lamprey, hagfish, dogfish, skate, rock bass, cod, river catfish, toad, amphiuma, leopard and bull frog, garter and brown snake, Coturnix quail and cowbird. The study of comparative histology in the vertebrates helps students and researchers alike understand how various groups have addressed similar problems, opening doors to interesting research possibilities. Not all vertebrates follow the mammalian model of tissue and organ structure. When dealing with unique species, we see some structures taken beyond their ‘normal’ function. Comparative histology allows us to understand the structural responses underlying the physiology unique to each vertebrate group. Presents the histology of a wide range of vertebrates, representative of all the major classes and families, with examples ranging from amphioxus to primates Includes an image gallery with over 500 flat images and 50+ virtual microscopy slides Contains electronic content features cross linking between text, tables and the image gallery
