Book excerpt: For graduating seminary students, Stephen Sprinkle has written a practical theological guide for preparing for ordination in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), United Church of Christ, American Baptist Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), and other closely related denominations. He provides a theology of what ordination is and what it means to the person being ordained, to the life of the church at large, and to the congregation gathered for the celebration. Sprinkle includes "hands-on" practical guidance on how to plan the service, plus samples of ordination services from each of the four traditions.

Book Synopsis The Legal Legacy of the Reformation by : John Duddington
Download or read book The Legal Legacy of the Reformation written by John Duddington and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in the relationship between religion and law is, in the case of Christianity, often viewed in monolithic terms. Moreover, the debate is often seen in terms of the relationship of Christianity to the state along with discussions about, for example, religious freedom. Christianity is often seen as responding to claims made on it by the state and by the growth of secularism. This book takes a different approach. First, it makes the claim that Christianity has something of value to say about various pressing issues which are of direct relevance to contemporary society. Amongst these are the place of human rights and that of individual claims of conscience. Second, it does not regard Christianity as a monolithic whole but takes as its starting point the sundering of Christendom at the Reformation, which, it claims, led in many cases to divergent patterns of thought between Catholics and Protestants about law and its place in society. However, as this book shows, in many cases, Catholic and Protestant thinking on areas such as natural law is not as divergent as it is often thought. Five hundred years after the Reformation, the work presents a reflection on the roots of Catholic and Protestant thinking on law and its place in society. It will be of interest to canon lawyers as well as academics and students of law and religion.

Now a person may use electronic funds transfer or use a credit card after clicking on a website link instead of dropping a check in the offering plate. Stewardship witness videos can be linked to the church’s website. One-Minute Stewardship is designed to promote the development of a meaningful theology of giving in a new age. These short reflections, indexed by Scripture, theme, event, and lectionary, can be included in weekly parish e-mails, newsletters, weekly bulletins, or read as an invitation to the offering during worship. The book addresses the issue of designated giving, which is usually separate from general stewardship appeals and is designed to empower clergy and lay leaders to promote the message of good stewardship every Sunday of the year.
Book Synopsis The Ecclesiology of Thomas F. Torrance by : Kate Tyler
Download or read book The Ecclesiology of Thomas F. Torrance written by Kate Tyler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a constructive analysis of Thomas F. Torrance’s ecclesiology. Holding the doctrine of the Trinity to be the “ground and grammar of theology,” Torrance viewed the doctrine of the Trinity as foundational for all ecclesiological reflection: What does it mean to be the people of the God whom Christians name as Father, Son, and Spirit? Tyler examines Torrance’s development of the rich potential of the metaphor koinonia, involving both a vertical dimension––the Church’s union with Christ through the Spirit––and a horizontal dimension––its visible existence in human history, lived out in space and time, and considers how the relationship between these two dimensions informs the structured forms of the Church’s life, its ecumenical breadth, and its missional vision.
Download or read book The Real Church written by Harald Hegstad and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to believe in the church? What is the relationship between the church we believe in and the church we experience? Is there an invisible church that is different from the visible? This book is an argument for an ecclesiology of the visible. The only church, the real church, is a concrete reality made up of people, just like any other fellowship. What distinguishes it as church is the presence of the triune God among those who gather in the name of Jesus, making it a sign and anticipationof the fellowship of the kingdom of God. From this premise Dr. Hegstad analyzes such issues as the relationship between church and world, mission and diakoni, church as fellowship and organization, ministries in the church, worship, and the unity of the church, as well as discussing the relationship between a sociological and a theological understanding of the church.

Book Synopsis Sacramental Orders by : Susan K. Wood
Download or read book Sacramental Orders written by Susan K. Wood and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of bishops, presbyters, and deacons identifies four conceptualizations of the Church influencing the relationship between ordained ministry and the Church: a monarchical and hierarchical conceptualization; a eucharistic, collegial model representing the communion of particular churches; the priest, prophet, and king motif that structures the concept of the Church as the people of God; and a theology of the Church as a sacrament of Christ and ordained ministry as a sacrament of the Church. It examines the 1990 ordination rites and discusses the sacramentality of episcopal ordination, the identity of the presbyterate, and questions concerning the diaconate.

Book Synopsis Out of the Office by : Robert D Cornwall
Download or read book Out of the Office written by Robert D Cornwall and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology is often seen as a discussion of dry doctrines, suitable mostly for academic institutions, but separated from the practice of faith. In this third volume of the Academy of Parish Clergy's Conversations in Ministry series Dr. Bob Cornwall, church historian, theologian, and pastor, shows the ways in which one's theology shapes one's ministry in the church and in the world. Besides discussing the theological roots of ministry and mission, this book is firmly placed in the 21st century, looking at the virtual world as our parish as well as more traditional connections. Practical. Systematic. Spiritual. Down-to earth. If you are looking for a way to put more life, focus, and meaning into your ministry as a pastor or church leader, this is the book for you.
Download or read book Canon Law written by Libero Gerosa and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main demands of Vatican II Council with respect to Canon Law was to always focus on the mystery of the Church. This clear and distinct position led to a renewal of the methodology applied to the discipline of Canon Law in almost all post-conciliar "schools". The canonistic demand however, similarly to change the didactic tools, the teaching material, in this new context has proved to be less significant. Knowing the importance and the urgency of this initiative has been a strong source of motivation to the author. The leading and inspiring idea behind this initiative is the conviction that the formal principles of Canon Law, both as the inner structure of the Church community as well as a proper scientific method, are the three fundamental elements of the constitution of the Church: the Word, the Sacrament and Charisma.
