Book excerpt: Ever since the invention of the transistor, semiconductor-based microelec tronics has made a revolutionary impact on the information society, as evi dent from the widespread application of microprocessor-based technology in our modern society. The next wave of modern information technology, after transistors and microelectronics, is that oflasers and micro-optoelectronics. Optoelectronics, or optical electronics, based on lasers and related modern optical technology, has also become a very important field of science and technology in the past 20 years. Electronics or microelectronics deals with (micro)electronic devices and components for generation, transmission, and processing of electronic sig nals. In contrast, in optoelectronics we deal with optoelectronic devices and components for the generation, transmission, and processing of lightwave signals. It is the interaction of lightwaves (photons) with matter that shows the uniqueness of optoelectronic technology; optical absorption and scat tering, optical gain and amplification, material and waveguide dispersion, nonlinear optical effects, etc., are very much dependent on the material's intrinsic properties and the lightwave propagation effects.

Responding to the growth of this exciting new technology, Lightwave Technology provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the underlying theory, development, operation, and management of these systems from the perspective of both physics and engineering. The first independent volume of this two-volume set, Components and Devices, deals with the multitude of silica- and semiconductor-based optical devices. This second volume, Telecommunication Systems, helps readers understand the design of modern lightwave systems, with an emphasis on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. * Two introductory chapters cover topics such as modulation formats and multiplexing techniques used to create optical bit streams * Chapters 3 to 5 consider degradation of optical signals through loss, dispersion, and nonlinear impairment during transmission and its corresponding impact on system performance * Chapters 6 to 8 provide readers with strategies for managing degradation induced by amplifier noise, fiber dispersion, and various nonlinear effects * Chapters 9 and 10 discuss the engineering issues involved in the design of WDM systems and optical networks Each chapter includes problems that enable readers to engage and test their new knowledge to solve problems. A CD containing illuminating examples based on RSoft Design Group's award-winning OptSim optical communication system simulation software is included with the book to assist readers in understanding design issues. Finally, extensive, up-to-date references at the end of each chapter enable students and researchers to gather more information about the most recent technology breakthroughs and applications. With its extensive problem sets and straightforward writing style, this is an excellent textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. Book excerpt: Fiber-optic communication systems have revolutionized our telecommunication infrastructures – currently, almost all telephone land-line, cellular, and internet communications must travel via some form of optical fibers. In these transmission systems, neither the phase nor frequency of the optical signal carries information – only the intensity of the signal is used. To transmit more information in a single optical carrier, the phase of the optical carrier must be explored. As a result, there is renewed interest in phase-modulated optical communications, mainly in direct-detection DPSK signals for long-haul optical communication systems. When optical amplifiers are used to maintain certain signal level among the fiber link, the system is limited by amplifier noises and fiber nonlinearities. Phase-Modulated Optical Communication Systems surveys this newly popular area, covering the following topics: - The transmitter and receiver for phase-modulated coherent lightwave systems - Method for performance analysis of phase-modulated optical signals - Direct-detection DPSK signal with fiber nonlinearities, degraded by nonlinear phase noise and intrachannel effects - Wavelength-division-multiplexed direct-detection DPSK signals - Multi-level phase-modulated optical signals, such as the four-phase DQPSK signal. Graduate students, professional engineers, and researchers will all benefit from this updated treatment of an important topic in the optical communications field.

Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of technical issues relating to lightwave technologies using high coherence lightwaves. Electromagnetic wave communication started when the first wireless system was invented by Marconi in 1895. However, we had to wait about one hundred years to realize a similar technology in the lightwave frequency region. The invention of lasers in 1960 and two technology innovations in 1970 -low loss silica fiber and semiconductor lasers operating at room temperature - promoted the development of fiber-optic transmission systems. The deployment of high-speed long-haul fiber-optic transmission systems has led to the formation of domestic and international trunk networks. The installed fiber cables in local loop plants provide multimedia communication services including broadband video. However, present lightwave communication systems do not fully utilize the fruitful potential oflightwaves, namely the capacity of extremely high frequency electromagnetic information carrier waves. The frequency oflightwaves used for fiber-optic transmission is about 200 THz 14 (2 x 10 Hz), and the frequency bandwidth of the fiber low loss region is about 13 20 THz (2 x 10 Hz). Recent developments of narrow spectrum width semiconduc tor laser and planar optical waveguide devices offer us the possibilities for a new generation of lightwave-based communication systems. This book focuses on system aspects ofthe new generation lightwave communi cation technologies such as optical frequency division multiplexing and coherent detection. Chapter 1 overviews lightwave communication system technology.

Currently, optical and optoelectronic technologies make possible the realization of high-performance optical fiber communication systems and networks with the adoption of WDM configurations and both linear and nonlinear optical amplifications. The last step for increasing network throughput is represented by the implementation of multidimensional modulation formats in coherent optical communication systems, which enable increasing the bit rate/channel toward 400 Gbit/s/channel and beyond. Following this approach, the main emphasis is placed on innovative optical modulations. Multidimensional Modulations in Optical Communication Systems is an essential guide to the world of innovative optical communications from the point of view of growing capacity and security. It guides researchers and industries with the aim to exploring future applications for optical communications.
