Book excerpt: Guiding, Diffraction, and Confinement of Optical Radiation presents a wide array of research studies on optics and electromagnetism. This book is organized into eight chapters that cover the problems related to optical radiation propagation and confinement. Chapter I examines the general features of electromagnetic propagation and introduces the basic concepts pertaining to the description of the electromagnetic field and its interaction with matter. Chapter II is devoted to asymptotic methods of solution of the wave equation, with particular emphasis on the asymptotic representation of the field in the form of the Luneburg-Kline series. This chapter also looks into a number of optical systems characterized by different refractive index distributions relying on the eikonal equation. Chapter III deals with stratified media, such as the multilayered thin films, metallic and dielectric reflectors, and interference filters. Chapters IV and V discuss the problem of propagation and diffraction integrals. Chapter VI describes the scattering from obstacles and the metallic and dielectric gratings. Chapters VII considers the passive and active resonators employed in connection with laser sources for producing a confinement near the axis of an optical cavity and Fabry-Perot interferometers and mainly relies on the use of diffraction theory. Chapter VIII presents the analytic approach to the study of transverse confinement near the axis of a dielectric waveguide hinges on the introduction of modal solutions of the wave equation. This book will be of value to quantum electronics engineers, physicists, researchers, and optics and electromagnetism graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book will help everyone responsible for health and safety at work to minimise optical radiation risks. It reviews the various sources of optical radiation and discusses the associated risks. Topics covered include biological effects, mechanisms of damage to the eyes and skin and situations where various optical radiation sources are likely to be found. This book provides a rational basis for the prescription and implementation of codes of practice and working procedures for the safe operation of sources of optical radiation in industrial, clinical and educational environments. Intended for health and safety professionals, radiation protection officers, environmental health officers and will also be of interest to lighting engineers and occupational hygienists.

Book excerpt: The trichromatic coefficients of light emerging from the top of a plane parallel, purely scattering Rayleigh (molecular) atmosphere have been computed. The extraterrestrial illumination from the sun is approximated with illumination from the CIE standard illuminant C. The ground is assumed to reflect radiation according to the Lambert law. The results are expressed in terms of the dominant wavelength and associated values of excitation purity. It is found that when the diffuse reflectivity of the ground assumes moderate to high values (0.25 to 0.8), the excitation purity of the emergent light is so small as to cause an overall 'neutral grey' or 'neutral white' appearance. On the other hand when the ground is non reflecting or when the diffuse reflectivity is very low, the dominant wavelength of the emergent radiation lies in the blue region and the associated excitation purity exhibits fairly high values (40%). It is possible that computations such as the above, when extended to more realistic models of the atmosphere, may find application in problems related to color-photographic reconnaissance from high altitudes. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on ”Advanced Radiation Sources and Applications” was held from August 29 to September 2, 2004. Hosted by the Yerevan Physics Institute, Yerevan, Armenia, 30 invited researchers from former Soviet Union and NATO countries gathered at Nor-Hamberd, Yerevan, on the slopes of Mount Aragats to discuss recent theoretical as well as expe- mental developments on means of producing photons from mostly low energy electrons. Thismeetingbecamepossiblethroughthegenerousfundingprovidedbythe NATO Science Committee and the programme director Dr. Fausto Pedrazzini in the NATO Scienti?c and Environmental Affairs Division. The workshop - rectors were Robert Avakian, Yerevan Physics Institute, Armenia and Helmut Wiedemann, Stanford (USA). Robert Avakian provided staff, logistics and - frastructure from the Yerevan Physics institute to assure a smooth execution of the workshop. Special thanks goes to Mrs. Ivetta Keropyan for admin- trative and logistics support to foreign visitors. The workshop was held at the institute’s resort in Nor-Hamberd on the slopes of Mount Aragats not far from the Yerevan cosmic ray station. The isolation and peaceful setting of the resort provided the background for a fruitful week of presentations and discussions. Following our invitations, 38 researchers in this ?eld came to the workshop from Armenia, Belarus, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, France, G- many and the USA. Commuting from Yerevan local scientists joined the daily presentations. Over a ?ve day period 40 presentations were given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation can be absorbed and re-emitted many times in atomic vapors before it reaches the boundaries of the container encasing the vapor. This effect is known as radiation trapping. It plays an important role practically everywhere atomic vapors occur, whether in spectroscopy, gas lasers, atomic line filters, the determination of atomic lifetimes, measurements of atomic interaction potentials, or electric discharge lamps. This book is the first to assemble all of the information necessary to handle practical problems related to radiation trapping, and it emphasizes both physical insights and mathematical methods. The introduction reviews resonance radiation and collision processes in atomic vapors. This is followed by detailed explanations of the physical effects and mathematical methods for various types of problems (e.g., with or without saturation, particle diffusion, reflecting cell walls). The last part of the book describes the applications of these methods to a variety of practical problems, such as cross-section measurements and the design of discharge lamps.
