Book excerpt: Leverage big data and demand into sustainable profitable growth Optimizing Growth is a handbook for how to succeed in the age of big data. Today’s business environment looks dramatically different than it did even a decade ago, and it continues to evolve at an increasing rate; macroeconomic shifts, consumer trends, technological advances, and changing competitive dynamics are accelerating the pace of change, and businesses are struggling to grow amidst the turbulence. This book provides insightful guidance, real-world success stories and practical tools to achieve growth in this new era, utilizing big data to achieve a deeper understanding of demand, customers, competitors, and opportunity. With disruption around every corner, growth now demands innovative new approaches and an improved capacity to meet customer needs; by gaining a stronger grasp of demand, businesses can elevate performance from “survive” to “thrive.” This book provides the approaches, analytics, frameworks, and organizational capabilities required to gain competitive advantage, and describes the new mindset required to leverage these tools into sustainable growth. Develop a deeper understanding of your business’s growth factors Re-sync your thinking to gain greater leverage against disruption Delve deeper into demand, and boost fulfillment capabilities Capture more growth opportunities using precision analytics frameworks The one thing that will never change about business is the goal of growth—but the paths to growth change continuously. New opportunities forge new routes to the top, while others become obsolete—does your company know the difference? The ability to differentiate between fads and genuine evolution is more critical than ever before. Optimizing Growth provides deep knowledge of what’s out there, and a clear framework for forging ahead.

Book excerpt: Seedlings of 27 sources of western yellow pines, selected in climates typical of the species, were raised in a nursery in the western Sierra Nevada. Seedling top and root growth capacities were periodically assessed during fall and winter, and field survivals of outplanted seedlings were evaluated in different climates with summer drought. In the nursery, four distinct, innate seasonal patterns of root growth capacity were defined in ponderosa pine from within and outside California, and two distinct patterns were defined in Jeffrey pine. Below snow line in the western Sierra Nevada, seedling survivals were higher in spring plantings than in a winter one, and for California sources than for others. In spring plantings above snow line, survivals for diverse local sources of ponderosa and Jeffrey pines were uniformly high, both on the western slope and east of the Sierra Nevada crest. The results demonstrate that seedlings of any source will have adequate growth capacity and will survive the first year on any well prepared site if they are lifted at the right time, stored properly, and planted in phase with warming soil trends.

Book excerpt: As the CEO of a small business, you know what it means to hit the ceiling. Business leaders often struggle with four primary barriers to growth: people, profit, control, and traction. The heroic efforts you relied on to build your business from the ground up, aren't adequate to take it to the next level. What you need are the three essential resources in the Optimize for Growth Model: * A business operating system helps CEOs articulate a shared vision and build the organization, process, accountability and productivity to achieve their goals.* A peer advisory network provides valuable insights and advice from other leaders who share their experiences in a trusted and confidential setting to leverage the wisdom of the group.* A business coach keeps the CEO accountable and acts as a necessary sounding board and advisor to shape key leadership skills. In his work with growing organizations in all industries, Jonathan B. Smith has helped executives implement the Optimize for Growth Model to foster their success. The book features stories of CEOs from various industries plus Jonathan's own experience building an INC 500 company. Every business owner eventually stalls on the road to growth. CEOs who bring in the right resources can make the difference between staying stuck and catapulting the organization to greater profits, productivity, and traction.
