Book excerpt: In 1972 the changeable message sign subcommittee conducted a large scale survey to establish the state-of-the-art in use of changeable message signs (CMS). In part one, 300 traffic engineers throughout the U.S. were polled concerning CMS application. Twenty-four percent of the 280 who responded indicated that their agency either has used or plans to use changeable message signs. The most frequently reported applications for CMS were to inform motorists of (1) turn prohibition at street intersections and (2) reversible lanes. Only 11 of 67 reporting agencies reported Standard specifications; 45 agencies do their own maintenance while 11 indicated that it is contracted out. In part two, the subcommittee conducted a survey of all known manufactures of CMS in order to identify the types of CMS presently being used. Eight companies responded to this survey. The variable matrix type CMS is the most popular type which is produced by 6 different companies. The drum type is produced by two companies. One company manufactures the Varicom CMS.

Book excerpt: The object of this contract was to identify problems with the visibility of changeable message signs (CMSs), particularly for older drivers, and to develop design guidelines and operational recommendations to ensure adequate conspicuity and legibility of in-service CMSs. This project was divided into three main sections: a field survey of in-use CMSs, a series of laboratory experiments and static field studies, and a partially controlled dynamic field study. The research was designed to optimize CMS components, including the character variables (font, width-to-height ratio, color, and contrast orientation) and the message variables (inter-letter, inter-word, and inter-line spacing).

Book excerpt: "The Los Angeles region has the most severe traffic congestion in the United States. Excessive traffic congestion detracts from quality of life, is economically wasteful and environmentally damaging, and exacerbates social justice concerns. Residents and policymakers agree that something must be done." "This volume recommends strategies for reducing congestion L.A. County that could be implemented and produce significant improvements within five years. The authors recommend a set of strategies that offer the greatest prospects for reducing congestion and improving transportation options in Los Angeles while considering complementary strategies for building consensus around effective, albeit potentially controversial, congestion-reduction measures. Though the specific recommendations proffered in the book are tailored to the L.A. region, leaders in other cities who are interested in strategies to reduce congestion should also find the study to be of value."--BOOK JACKET.
