Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in photosynthesis research is strongly dependent on instrumentation. It is therefore not surpr- ing that the impressive advances that have been made in recent decades are paralleled by equally impressive advances in sensitivity and sophistication of physical equipment and methods. This trend started already shortly after the war, in work by pioneers like Lou Duysens, the late Stacy French, Britton Chance, Horst Witt, George Feher and others, but it really gained momentum in the seventies and especially the eighties when pulsed lasers, pulsed EPR spectrometers and solid-state electronics acquired a more and more prominent role on the scene of scientific research. This book is different from most others because it focuses on the techniques rather than on the scientific questions involved. Its purpose is three-fold, and this purpose is reflected in each chapter: (i) to give the reader sufficient insight in the basic principles of a method to understand its applications (ii) to give information on the practical aspects of the method and (iii) to discuss some of the results obtained in photosynthesis research in order to provide insight in its potentalities. We hope that in this way the reader will obtain sufficient information for a critical assessment of the relevant literature, and, perhaps more important, will gain inspiration to tackle problems in his own field of research. The book is not intended to give a comprehensive review of photosynthesis, but nevertheless offers various views on the exciting developments that are going on.

For the first time the biological, biochemical, and chemical aspects of the role of these pigments in photosynthesis are brought together in one comprehensive reference volume. Chapters focus on the photochemistry of carotenoids in light harvesting and photoprotection, the nature and distribution of carotenoids in photosynthetic organisms, their biosynthesis, the herbicidal inhibition of carotenogenesis and the `xanthophyll cycle'. Throughout details are given of the various methodologies used. A detailed appendix provides physical data for the major compounds. Carotenoids in Photosynthesis is an invaluable reference source for all plant scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To perform photosynthesis, plants, algae and bacteria possess well organized and closely coupled photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes. The information on energy transfer processes and protein dynamics contained in the narrow zero-phonon lines at low temperatures is hidden under the inhomogeneous broadening. Thus, it is difficult to analyze the spectroscopic properties of these complexes in sufficient detail by conventional spectroscopy methods. In this context, high resolution spectroscopy techniques such as Spectral Hole Burning, Fluorescence Line Narrowing and Single Molecule / Single Complex Spectroscopy are powerful tools designed to overcome the inhomogeneous broadening difficulty. This thesis focuses mainly on the low-temperature protein dynamics of several photosynthetic protein complexes (LH2, CP43, CP29 and LHCII). The hole growth kinetics and the shape of the anti-hole due to the non-photochemical spectral hole burning have been explored, and interpreted within the framework of theoretical models describing spectral diffusion due to conformational changes between nearly identical substates on a multi-tier protein energy landscapes.

Book excerpt: The workshop on "Antennas and Reaction Centers of Photosynthetic Bac teria" was held at Feldafing, Bavaria (F. R. G. )' March 23-25, 1985. This workshop focussed on primary processes with emphasis on structure, inter actions and dynamics. It assessed structural, spectroscopic and dynamic data which have accumulated recently, providing an overview of the mech anism of the acquisition, storage and useful disposal of energy in bacterial photosynthesis. This volume is a record of the invited papers presented at the workshop. The material was organized into five sections: I. Antennas: Structure and Energy Transfer II. Reaction Centers: Structure and Interactions III. Electron Transfer: Theory and Model Systems IV. Reaction Cen,ters: Structure and Dynamics V. Model Systems on Function of Antennas and Reaction Centers I would like to express my gratitude to all the participants in the work shop for their contributions, and to the authors for the timely preparation of their manuscripts. I am indebted to the members of the organizing committee, Professors Sighart F. Fischer and Hugo Scheer for their most valuable assistance and advice. The workshop would not have been so successful without the help of my secretary, Frau Petra KahlfuB, and my coworkers in its organization. I thank Frau KahlfuB particularly also for her assistance in the preparation of these proceedings. The workshop was organized under the auspices of the Technical Uni versity of Munich, the Max-Planck-Society and the University of Munich.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Jerusalem Symposium reflected the high standards of these distinguished scientific meetings, which convene once a year at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem to discuss a specific topic in the broad area of quantum chemistry and 'biochemistry. The topic at this year's Jerusalem Symposium was Perspectives in Photosynthesis, which constitutes a truly interdisciplinary subject of central interest to biophysicists, and biologists. chemists The main theme of the Symposium was built around a conceptual framework for the acquisition, storage and useful disposal of energy in photosynthetic reaction centres. Emphasis was placed on the elucidation of primary charge separation processes in photosynthesis and their exploration within the framework of the electron transfer theory, on the interrelationship between structural data, inter actions and electron transfer kinetics, and on the role of protein dynamics in primary processes in photosynthesis. The interdisciplinary nature of these research areas was deliberated by intensive and extensive interactions between scientists from different disciplines and between theory and experiment. This volume provides a record of the invited lectures at the Symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Life Is Bottled Sunshine" [Wynwood Reade, Martyrdom of Man, 1924]. This inspired phrase is a four-word summary of the significance of photosynthesis for life on earth. The study of photosynthesis has attracted the attention of a legion of biologists, biochemists, chemists and physicists for over 200 years. Discoveries in Photosynthesis presents a sweeping overview of the history of photosynthesis investigations, and detailed accounts of research progress in all aspects of the most complex bioenergetic process in living organisms. Conceived of as a way of summarizing the history of research advances in photosynthesis as of millennium 2000, the book evolved into a majestic and encyclopedic saga involving all of the basic sciences. The book contains 111 papers, authored by 132 scientists from 19 countries. It includes overviews; timelines; tributes; minireviews on excitation energy transfer, reaction centers, oxygen evolution, light-harvesting and pigment-protein complexes, electron transport and ATP synthesis, techniques and applications, biogenesis and membrane architecture, reductive and assimilatory processes, transport, regulation and adaptation, Genetics, and Evolution; laboratories and national perspectives; and retrospectives that end in a list of photosynthesis symposia, books and conferences. Informal and formal photographs of scientists make it a wonderful book to have. This book is meant not only for the researchers and graduate students, but also for advanced undergraduates in Plant Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics and History of Science.
