Book excerpt: Particle characterization is an important component in product research and development, manufacture, and quality control of particulate materials and an important tool in the frontier of sciences, such as in biotechnology and nanotechnology. This book systematically describes one major branch of modern particle characterization technology - the light scattering methods. This is the first monograph in particle science and technology covering the principles, instrumentation, data interpretation, applications, and latest experimental development in laser diffraction, optical particle counting, photon correlation spectroscopy, and electrophoretic light scattering. In addition, a summary of all major particle sizing and other characterization methods, basic statistics and sample preparation techniques used in particle characterization, as well as almost 500 latest references are provided. The book is a must for industrial users of light scattering techniques characterizing a variety of particulate systems and for undergraduate or graduate students who want to learn how to use light scattering to study particular materials, in chemical engineering, material sciences, physical chemistry and other related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Size Analysis reviews the development of particle characterization over the past 25 years and also speculates on its future. Interest in the subject has increased enormously over the years and this book highlights the changes and advances made within the field. This book is comprehensive in its coverage of particle size analysis and includes contributions on such characterization techniques as microscopy using fractal analysis, light diffraction, light scattering with the phase doppler technique, light observation, and photon correlation spectroscopy. A number of chapters address the interest in on-line in-stream particle size analysis and illustrate the progress being made in achieving this long sought after ideal of in-situ in-process particle characterization. Applications to other technological fields are detailed by chapters covering biological systems and the pharmaceutical industry. The subject of surface area determination is considered with particular emphasis on the measurements on porosity of powders, the characterization and comparability of reference materials, and the need for standards. Particle Size Analysis should provide stimulating reading for technologists, scientists, and engineers involved in particle characterization and powder technology worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades oil analysis laboratories have used automatic particle counters to determine the number and size of particles in many oil wetted systems. Once determined, there has been the question of "what are they?" Logically, the next step is to investigate the make-up of the particles by extracting the particles and analyzing using emission spectroscopy and/or a filter membrane for view them under magnification. Characterizing the make-up of the particles is very useful in determining the source. A cost-effective action plan can be undertaken to rectify the identified problem once the particle type is determined. The problem with these two approaches is; emission spectroscopy analysis is often unreliable in identifying larger particles and; under optical magnification it is not possible to tell for sure the makeup of the particles. In some cases scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis is undertaken to further identify the particles. This proves to be time-consuming for the SEM operator and is left to the operator to judge which areas of the sample to investigate. This study illustrates the performance and innovative approach to resolving the aforementioned limitations on sizing and identifying particles using an "Automated Electron Beam Particle Analyzer" equipped with "Automated Feature Analysis" (AFA) software to characterize complex matrix of particles extracted onto a membrane filter from oil samples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical particle s1z1ng is undoubtedly a fascinating field of research of the utmost practical importance. In the Universe fluids are nearly everywhere, and when they occur they almost invariably contain particles. Inside our bodies we can take the example of blood transporting a vi tal procession of red and white cells. Around us, we can find various particles in the air we breathe, bubbles in the champagne or the soda we drink, or natural and artificial (polluting!) particles in the lakes we swim in. Industrial processes and systems are also concerned with particles, from pulverized coal flames to fluidized beds, in a range of applications involving rocket exhausts, pneuma tic transport and more generally the infinite realm of mul tiphase situations. Such an obviously vast field would require a whole volume like this one merely to attempt to describe it superficially. To be sure, we would need a scientific Prevert to catalogue such an endless inventory. Finally, even outside our terrestrial spaceship particles can be detected in alien atmospheres or between stars. Theorists will enjoy analyzing the richness of light/particle interact. ion, a subject which is very far from being exhausted. Experimental researchers will love designing and studying various probing instruments with a laser source at the input and a computer at the output, two requisites of today' s technological revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lorenz-Mie theory, describing the interaction between a homogeneous sphere and an electromagnetic plane wave, is likely to be one of the most famous theories in light scattering. But, with the advent of lasers and their increasing development in various fields, it has become too old-fashioned to meet most of the modern requisites. The book deals with generalized Lorenz-Mie theories when the illuminating beam is an electromagnetic arbitrary shaped beam, relying on the method of separation of variables. A particular emphasis is stressed on the case of the homogeneous sphere but other regular particles are considered too. An extensive discussion of the methods available to the evaluation of beam shape coefficients describing the illuminating beam is provided, and several methods are discussed. Applications concern many fields such as optical particle sizing and, more generally, optical particle characterization, morphology-dependent resonances, or mechanical effects of light for optical trapping, optical tweezers and optical stretchers. Various computer programs relevant to the contents of the book are furthermore provided.

SAS is produced by the particle as a whole and does not depend in any way on the internal crystal structure of the particle. Since the first applications of X-ray scattering in the 1930s, SAS has developed into a standard metho
