Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a conference by the New York Academy of Sciences held in 1997. The papers explore optical biopsy and optical mammography - new techniques that allow investigators to determine whether a tissue is cancerous without using invasive techniques. The text offers an analysis of the spectrum light emitted from optically excited tissue which allows investigators to detect physical and chemical changes in tissue and determine whether the tissue is normal, benign or cancerous.

Book Synopsis Biomedical Optical Imaging by : James G. Fujimoto
Download or read book Biomedical Optical Imaging written by James G. Fujimoto and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomedical optical imaging is a rapidly emerging research area with widespread fundamental research and clinical applications. This book gives an overview of biomedical optical imaging with contributions from leading international research groups who have pioneered many of these techniques and applications. A unique research field spanning the microscopic to the macroscopic, biomedical optical imaging allows both structural and functional imaging. Techniques such as confocal and multiphoton microscopy provide cellular level resolution imaging in biological systems. The integration of this technology with exogenous chromophores can selectively enhance contrast for molecular targets as well as supply functional information on processes such as nerve transduction. Novel techniques integrate microscopy with state-of-the-art optics technology, and these include spectral imaging, two photon fluorescence correlation, nonlinear nanoscopy; optical coherence tomography techniques allow functional, dynamic, nanoscale, and cross-sectional visualization. Moving to the macroscopic scale, spectroscopic assessment and imaging methods such as fluorescence and light scattering can provide diagnostics of tissue pathology including neoplastic changes. Techniques using light diffusion and photon migration are a means to explore processes which occur deep inside biological tissues and organs. The integration of these techniques with exogenous probes enables molecular specific sensitivity.

Book Synopsis Lasers for Medical Applications by : Helena Jelínková
Download or read book Lasers for Medical Applications written by Helena Jelínková and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 827 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers have a wide and growing range of applications in medicine. Lasers for Medical Applications summarises the wealth of recent research on the principles, technologies and application of lasers in diagnostics, therapy and surgery. Part one gives an overview of the use of lasers in medicine, key principles of lasers and radiation interactions with tissue. To understand the wide diversity and therefore the large possible choice of these devices for a specific diagnosis or treatment, the respective types of the laser (solid state, gas, dye, and semiconductor) are reviewed in part two. Part three describes diagnostic laser methods, for example optical coherence tomography, spectroscopy, optical biopsy, and time-resolved fluorescence polarization spectroscopy. Those methods help doctors to refine the scope of involvement of the particular body part or, for example, to specify the extent of a tumor. Part four concentrates on the therapeutic applications of laser radiation in particular branches of medicine, including ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, urology, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology (ORL), neurology, dentistry, orthopaedic surgery and cancer therapy, as well as laser coatings of implants. The final chapter includes the safety precautions with which the staff working with laser instruments must be familiar. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this important book summarizes international achievements in the field of laser applications in medicine in the past 50 years. It provides a valuable contribution to laser medicine by outstanding experts in medicine and engineering. Describes the interaction of laser light with tissue Reviews every type of laser used in medicine: solid state, gas, dye and semiconductor Describes the use of lasers for diagnostics
Book Synopsis Neurophotonics and Biomedical Spectroscopy by : Robert R. Alfano
Download or read book Neurophotonics and Biomedical Spectroscopy written by Robert R. Alfano and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurophotonics and Biomedical Spectroscopy addresses the novel state-of-the-art work in non-invasive optical spectroscopic methods that detect the onset and progression of diseases and other conditions, including pre-malignancy, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, tissue and cell response to therapeutic intervention, unintended injury and laser energy deposition. The book then highlights research in neurophotonics that investigates single and multi-photon excitation optical signatures of normal/diseased nerve tissues and in the brain, providing a better understanding of the underlying biochemical and structural changes of tissues and cells that are responsible for the observed spectroscopic signatures. Topics cover a wide array of well-established UV, visible, NIR and IR optical and spectroscopic techniques and novel approaches to diagnose tissue changes, including: label free in vivo and ex vivo fluorescence spectroscopy, Stoke shift spectroscopy, spectral imaging, Resonance Raman spectroscopy, multiphoton two Photon excitation, and more. Provides an overview of the spectroscopic properties of tissue and tissue-light interaction, describing techniques to exploit these properties in imaging Explores the potential and significance of molecule-specific imaging and its capacity to reveal vital new information on nanoscale structures Offers a concise overview of different spectroscopic methods and their potential benefits for solving diagnostic and therapeutic problems
